Really appreciate how these piano covers make me understand DsO better. They've talked about their classical music influences before in their interviews like Ivan Wyschnegradsky and Krzysztof Penderecki, so hearing these played on piano really offers the kind of perspective that inspired this album in the first place.

The album is a masterpiece. The song is a masterpiece. This cover does honor to the original. "What the desire to be happy means: suffering and the desire to escape. When I suffer (for example: yesterday, rheumatism, the cold, and above aIl, anguish-having read passages from the 120 Days), I become attached to little pleasures. The nostalgia for salvation responds perhaps to the increase of suffering (or rather to the incapacity to bear it). The idea of salvation comes, I believe, from one whom suffering breaks apart. He who masters it, on the contrary, needs to be broken, to proceed on the path towards rupture." Georges Bataille, Inner experience ( Summa atheologica I)

Fucking bravo. DsO are obviously influenced by modern classical music. Bands like them, and a project like this, really make me curious to see a full marrying of extreme metal and modern classical music. Like pairing up an orchestra with extreme metal instrumentation, and obviously not in the sense that something like Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Cradle of Filth or Septicflesh might do, but extreme death/black metal being combined with classical musicians taking nods from Penderecki, Xenakis, Ligeti, Varese, Ammann etc., for complicated, long-form, dissonant, atonal, brutal, hideous through-composed pieces... Has this happened somewhere already? Or maybe a death/black metal band doing an interpretation of an existing piece by Penderecki, Bartok, Schoenberg, etc?
@martinogrosa23232 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree with you! I think that the peculiar sound world of modern classical music, not only because of its atonal harmonic soundscape but more generally because on its focus on sound itself as a complex, rich phenomenon (which makes it very akin to the non-polyphonic, dense and in-your-face sonorous approach of metal in general, extreme metal in particular), would make a perfect match for death/black metal. I don't know if you already know him, but, since it seems to fit the description of what you're looking for quite surprisingly, I think you'd like Bernhard Gander, an actual contemporary classical music composer who incorporates in his oeuvre many elements of extreme metal - for instance, he wrote a piece called "Oozing Earth" which, in addiction to an ensemble of classical musicians, was designed to be premiered with Cryptopsy's drummer and Mayhem's Attila Csihar on vocals! I do not know if that actually happened or not - as far as a clumsy and incomplete research showed me, the piece was supposed to premiere in March 2020, right at the outset of the Corona pandemic, so it probably was first played months after, and the drummer was replaced by someone else; in any case, I unfortunately was not able to listen to that piece of music. Anyway, sorry for the long message, I hope to have aroused your curiosity!

These aren’t on the level you’re asking for (at least to my untrained ear) but Wreche is a bm band that’s just piano, drums and yelled vocals and Les Chants du Hasard is a full orchestra with bm screaming. The latter’s latest album, Malivore, leans more into bm but still has those orchestral elements.

How did the creators come up with the composition? For example, was the original track reduced to midi and then mimicked? Or, just played by ear? Transcription software?
