The Real Difference Between Indica and Sativa Plants

The basic differences between Indica and Sativa are where they originated from. Sativa's were originally from low latitude tropical regions such as Columbia, Thailand,Laos, Jamaica,India,Mexico. 0 degrees to 25 degrees north of the equator. While Indica's developed further north from the equator, 25 degrees to 40 degrees. The Indica's were developed for hashish production, thus the larger trichomes, however that adaption also had to do with the protection of the plant from the extreme desert heat of those latitudes. Because of these adaptions to their respective latitudes from the equator, is the reason why Sativas take longer to mature than Indica's. In a temperate northern climate, a Columbian or Thai strain won't mature until late December if at all. While conversely an Indica plant when planted in a low latitude tropical climate, such as Jamaica(plenty of videos on youtube) will act like an auto flower and mature immediately reacting to the even day and night cycles to the proximity of the equator. So its a little more than wider leaves and narrow leaves.Even though these are adaptions to their respective environments of origin as well. People have lost touch with these basics, because ,for the last 25 years these disembodied hybrids have mostly been grown indoors, far away from their original climates of origin. But probably the most basic way to identify, is how long flowering takes to maturity, the more Sativa in a hybrid, the longer it will take to finish.

That's why Sativas (full season grow) can yield much more product than indica strains (90-day wonder buds) I've seen sativas that were 30 years old with trunks so big that you could't wrap your arms around them. You could swing from their lower branches...I live in Hawaii...

Also wild indica plants are either male or female . Wild sativa females in the absence of a male plant can grow male pods and self pollinate to produce seed.

A very simple way that i was taught in the 70's to recognise the difference is that the lancelots on the Indica leaf overlap a little near the base but the Sativa dont.. Your videos are very well put together very informative and highly commendable. In knowledge lies wisdom :) .

Thanks for putting out the truth. There are even old dogs that claim the classification alone will let them know how it will work for them. It's all about the terpene profile, THC/CBD (and undoubtedly other cannabinoids that haven't been researched as much) content and personal genetics. You can definitely get a feel of what tastes are related to potential effects you may get.

Great video! I've always heard that Sativa grows tall because it was optimized by farmers for fiber, as used in cloth and rope. Indica refers to strains from the East, varieties bred for psychotropic effects.

I've been binge watching your videos and they're really concise and helpful, I am so glad I found your channel! However in this video I'm not sure I follow. You explain and demonstrate the morphological differences of the two strains, but as a layman it doesn't follow that there might not also be differences in the effect of the plants. Hybrids aren't a bad thing though, as in most cases, the breeders are trying to select the best genes to hybridize,and some websites let you track the lineage from dispenseries. I'm currently growing a Sativa strain that takes 14- 16 weeks to finish. Those long thin leaves can take on direct sun much better then an Indica in my experience.

You can have both in a greenhouse under the same conditions but each will respond differently. Indica are cool-natured short-season plants and Sativa is warm-natured long photoperiod plants. That's what makes the difference. 😎

@@DeBaccoUniversity Keep it Simple.....there will ALWAYS be exceptions to the Rule....with so many factors and variables in growing the plant getting uniquely different results from alternating a single environment variable, the same can be said with humans.....we must NOT complicate cannnabiss more so than it is understood. I agree for safety sake and clarity professional research and studies, must be done....my knowledge cones from 37 years of working with the plant, itself and experimenting with cannabanoid isolates, individually as well as different concoctions of several.....to do this experiment with terpenes I found to be overwhelming as there are so many individually that the list of concoctions are endless for one lifetime, lol....especially at 50 years old. I've almost tried every strain or cultivar , right up and until the kids got into the seed pile and mixed everything with anything .....as with terpene profiles the crosses are endless. I'm actually looking for those old skool Skunk, Bubba kush and Northern light number 5 , the real pheno cuts, but next to impossible to find, yet they are definitely out there, still to this day.....

I don't remember them as speedy the way people describe it now. It is a deep body high. One other thing to mention is the taste. The curing process was different and buds had no chlorophyl left in them. No green, just red, brown, golden loveliness. A totally different set of flavor profiles. Spiced.

The biggest difference between sativa and indica is the grow time. Sativa has a "full season" (9 month) life cycle and indica has a 3-month cycle (90-day wonder buds) that's my experience...

I have noticed under full spectrum LED lights that I can have leaves that look very fat until mid flower.THen they tend to get more of a sativa look to them and the new leaf is much smaller than in veg phase. Any thoughts on this Prof. DeBacco?

The light penetrates everything when they are that shorts so it's one massive bud for each plant. I wish it never became legal here. It's an amazing way to make extra cash.

Considering that most everything these days has been hybridized, you may find plants that are expressively sativa, but exhibit a high CBD content for example, which would be couch-locking. I worked in helicopters for California fire department in 1970s. Before Reagan paid us to eradicate all cannabis. We saw a small group of Sativa plants in a mountain creek bottom that were close to being about 20 feet tall. The aroma was so much stronger than the indica. What happened to these giant overwhelmingly aromatic sativas? Are they extinct?

I'm not kidding here. That sounds like some crops I used to grow for years in a little canyon. That was inside San Dimas canyon. I use to see this little canyon all the time. And it always had a little water running in it all year long. While the main stream of the canyon would dry out in july. There were no trails going into this little canyon. And there was nowhere to park. Well one day I had to find out why there was always water running down this little canyon. So I start up the canyon. Walking in the stream, not to leave a trail. And the stream is only a foot wide. But in some places it got 2 to 3 feet wide max. Let me say right here. That at this time I was only 16 years old. And it was in the early 70s. Anyway all the soil a long the stream was really rich good soil. So I've gone about 3 miles now. And I turn this one corner and I'm looking at the next corner, which was only like 30 feet away. And one side of the canyon was like a shear cliff straight up, like 60 feet tall. It was like a solid wall of rock. And at the bottom of this wall was some very rich soil that came off the wall like 3 feet wide. So I turn left to keep going up the canyon. And bam like 20 feet away the canyon ends. And sticking out of the wall of the canyon is a 12 inch round pipe with water coming out of it. And I'm like WTF. So as I'm hiking out I mark a lot of places I want to plant seeds, when I come back in the spring. Well I don't make it back up there till the end if May. And yes there is still water running. So as you hike up this little canyon. You make a quick right then a quick left. Then you can see up the canyon for like a half mile. So I make the left and I look and I'm like WTF. The whole width of the canyon and like 30 feet high. Is nothing but poison oak. I couldn't believe it. And I thought to myself, this is a good reason there isn't any trails going into this canyon. Needless to say I turned around and went home. The next year I went up there at the beginning of march. And the poison oak was just started to come out. So I planted all the way up the canyon. At least 50 different places. And as I got about 3/4 into the canyon there was no trace of poison oak. Once I made it to the end where that shear cliff was. I planted about 40 seeds that I had from some good Al gold, colum gold and some Thai sticks. And I kept them all separate. So I would know which ones were which. So now I can't make back up there till the end of April. And the poison oak is starting to get crazy. But I dressed for the occasion. And every place around where I planted had stayed clear of the poison oak. And I was shocked almost every place I planted had sprout. But the top of every plant had been eaten off. I was pissed. And I'd never seen any tracks. Or seen or heard any animals while I was up there. So I decide to hike to the end. And bam once I made the turn to see where that shear cliff was. Every seed had sprouted and the plants were like a foot and a half tall already. Anyway I'm going on way to long here. I ended getting at least 20 foot high plants. And they grew all the way across the canyon. I grew there for about 4 years with outstanding results. Till one year like a f#$king idiot. I took a so called friend up there. And in August of that year I went up there and every single plant was gone. And I know that they weren't even flowering yet. Anyway I come to find out that this so called friend ended up with two broken arms. Imagine that. I just thought I'd share a little experience I had.

I'm 50 and when I was younger people use to say that real landrace sativa was rare because it takes too long to flower between 16 and 24 weeks...first landrace sativa I grew was from Africa I started 12/12 direct stretch during 7 weeks never stop growing SCROG full multiple pruning humidity issues it took 26 weeks from seed to harvest 3x3 was packed with 1 plant who never stopped...it was really nice but nothing you can't find with a shorter flowering time... and today it is almost impossible to have the opportunity to taste a range of landrace to find out if there's something special about it some cannabinoid only long flowering plants have or some terpenes the plant produce after a long period some effects etc...

The morphologies are different and yes typically Sativas do take longer to flower, but when both are under the same photo-period they can flower at a similar time as the Indicas. Interesting that you had the perpetual grower. The goal is to show it is the plants that are different not necessarily the effects.

The main difference chemically between Sativa and Indica is the amount of Myrcene found in the strains. Indica strains contain more then Sativa plants, and Myrcene is known for its relaxing, tranquilizing effects. I theorize that the difference in flower development, Sativa taking 9-12+ weeks to harvest vs Indicas taking 7-9 on average. But if you look at strains known to be high in Myrcene you will find that the majority are heavy Indica dominant strains more so then Sativa heavy.

Growing up most of my herbs were smuggled accross the border from Mexico. I selected seeds from a few strains I deemed worthy. It was a hit and miss project but ultimately Sativa vs Indica was nonrelevant. My success stories were only successful because of successful plants. Based on my results, it was a similar yield regardless in a controlled group experiment.

Wait, so if it’s having to do with the morphology and structure of the plant, why is it a misconception that Indica plants produce more sedative effects, and sativa plants produce uplifting, energy based euphoric effects? Can you explain this? From my personal experience, consuming Sativa plants give me anxiety. The ONLY sativa that has not, is Blue dream, but I believe that’s more of a hybrid. With that being said, indica plants are my go to. Or indica dominant hybrids. I don’t feel anxious whatsoever when consuming indicas. While it can be true that indica can be spotted early on from leaf structure and size, the real telling for me has always been odors, resins and most importantly the effect on the psyche when ingested. In simpler terms, indica is skunk weed. It tends to be a stronger buzz, to the point of full body sedation. Sativa has a sweeter smell, usually comes with a more of a lighter head high.

That indica strain you showed definitely has sativa admixture. Sativas can also ignore shorter than 14 hr days and go into veg anyway. Indicas are incapable of this.

Hello Prof. DeBacco I would like to share with you something I wrote down about Cannabis and the real differences between Sativa & Indica. I would like to have an open discussion and hear what you think. I’m sorry for my English, it’s not my native language. Any cannabis plant should be called a sativa as it is "domesticated" (Latin for sativa). Indica derives from landraces discovered in India which were apparently, therefore morphologically, different from African or Thai sativa landraces because they are influenced by exogenous factors. The fact is that they are all C. Sativa. C. Ruderalis is also a C. Sativa The most sativa/indica differentiation is only morphological and given by factors such as humidity, exposure, climate and microclimate, water, temperature etc. (Above 3500m landraces will tend to assume an “Indica” morphology with broad leaves and a low bushy structure; I'm not sure of this). Filiform leaves, high internodal distance, marked vertical growth are typical "sativa" morphological characteristics; these characteristics are pronounced in arid environments, with little water. There is therefore less loss due to evapotranspiration (just think of the evolution and adaptation of plants in the desert with leaves transformed into thorns and so on). The sativa/indica difference attributed today mostly refers to the perceived effect. This is a lie indoctrinated and perpetuated also thanks to the placebo effect. The perceived effect is given by the chemical compounds produced by cannabis and in particular the synergy between the various volatile aromatic molecules terpene, diterpenes, sesquiterpenes and so on that give rise to the entourage effect (very interesting topic that I want to deepen). It follows that the indica/sativa terminology is particularly useful for the grower to define the phenotype of the plant. The genotype encompasses the characteristics in terms of chemical compounds produced. Nothing else. It is therefore possible to have sativa-style plants (morphologically) with typical indica effects. And viceversa. Hybrids represent a middle ground between the two morphological types with dominant characteristics of one and the other.

The Asian Indica's have two phenotypes . The short squat Afghan Kush phenotype from higher and drier environments of the Hindu Kush and the S.E. Asian phenotypes from the monsoonal environments of Thailand , Vietnam etc.. The monsoon phenotypes have more open stature , grow very tall, and have thin leaves like sativa to let air and rain through, and the Kush types are squat with extremely wide leaves to conserve moisture. I can remember one leaf segment was four fingers wide. And the odor was distinct like the hashish product made from the same plants. Other than that the two types are identical chemically. Pure Afghan was given to the University of Washington back in the 70's. I remember it well. It grew knee or hip high at best. Vietnam vets brought back the Mekong delta types around the same time. Both were very strong and not for the amateur! The wide leaf example shown here is not like the extremely wide leaf of the Afghan I remember. Looks to be more of a hybrid possibly. True examples are hard to find these days. Today one would call the monsoonal phenotype sativa due to it's thin long leaf and open tall stature. That would be wrong by the botanical standards of the late 70's early 80's. I am quoting ' The Botany and Ecology of Cannabis' by Robert Connell Clarke 1977

Hi, I live in South Africa, it's legal here to grow and smoke your own weed on your own property, been growing for approx. 10 years now, I use mostly Durban poison, Malawi gold and Zimbabwe copper. Our growing season is between August and May, (summer). A few years back I had a plant that survived winter, that became a hermaphrodite, that produces flowers and buds. I've had a few more like this from seeds I've saved from that plant. Is this common?

It‘s because of all the crossbreeding, which isn’t necessarily bad, but if you get 100% pure landrace Sativas vs landrace Indicas you‘ll notice the difference, because if the plant develops differently, in different conditions, their effects will be different. It is a proven fact, that the entourage effect is dependent on the terpenes and even more so on specific cannabinoid compounds, that you nowadays find in basically all strains, the Indica compounds as well as the Sativa compounds, as well as the Ruderalis compounds for Autoflower, but with the original landrace strains, purebreeds, you‘d still have that key compound, as Bom Shiva intended it to be. 🤷🏻‍♂️ (Sativa developed more tropical, hot and humid, southern India, whereas Indica mainly originated from continental, arid, mountainous regions like the Himalayas, the Hindukush, up to Kazachstan and Mongolia)

gee, that explains it. Indica and sativa are simply adaptations a weed plant uses depending on it's altitude and environment. High and dry= indica, low wet humid= sativa. Any weed plant wether we call it sativa or indica has these adaptations built into it's genes already. In india for example you can travel up a mountain and observe the cannabis plants traits changing from sativa looking to indica looking as you go higher. These changes have gone back and forth countless times as people have spread cannabis around the globe and of course selective breeding changes the plants traits as well.

I have 4 tall plants that have 9 to 10 point leaves. What does that mean? Are they sativa's or a mutation?

Arjan Raskam of the landrace Strain Hunters told Damian Marley in his pursuit of Jamaican lambs bread that a sativa seed will still yield an indica plant if cultivated at an outdoor elevation above 3,500 ft. I don’t know if this is true, but I am curious what Professor Debacco has to say??????

Thanks for valuing the opinion here. In short cultivation can change the behavior of the plants morphology, but technically not the full chemical profile as this is genetic. So, the phenotype of the plant may change, but the genotype will remain consistent. Hope this helps.

@@DeBaccoUniversity very interesting. That must only further the the complexity of hybridization of sativa and indica then I assume. It’s would be interesting to see experiments done with cannabis where the morphology is affected and how much in regards to elevation. I’m not far enough through your videos but I imagine more knowledge lies ahead. Thanks for the fast feedback!

What about the difference in leaf segment count? The indica example only had 5 while the sativa had 7. Is this just a common variance seen in both species?

This can also commonly be seen in addition to the leaf morphology.

Doesn't Indica also have a slightly shorter grow cycle (I mean in the wild, not the artificial lighting conditions of your average grow room)? The differences, I've been led to believe; all stem (no pun intended) from the prevailing weather conditions in the area where each developed. Indica grows further from the equator than Sativa, therefore it needs wider leaves to maximize the amount of the sun's ray's it uses to photosynthesize,, & is a sturdier plant because it's more likely to encounter inclement weather, & has a shorter grow cycle because seasons are a thing the further you are from the equator (hour of sunlight being quite different from summer to winter). Am I wrong?

You are correct Indicas tend to have a shorter growing cycle due to the geographic regions they originate from.

grown both n prefer the "sativa" thinner leaves and sometimes 7 vs 5 leaflets to the fatter "indica" ones. no one really talked about all these labels til legal. never heard "terpins" in 25 years of smoking b4.🍻
