If the issue is the presence of Sea Lions, there are plenty other safer beaches around San Diego's coast. Our community prides itself on keeping nature within the city preserved. This is NOT LA or Venice beach.

Couldn't we observe the sea lions and seals from a safe distance? After all, these creatures are wild and will attack you without warning if provoked!

We can. I’ve been there. For some reason people want to get up close and it does nothing but agitate the sea lions. People bother them for their own personal gain,and disregard the sea lions safety and well-being.

The cove “Belongs” to the sea lions. Either close off the area or Charge for the Access, with that funding pay for maintaining private security to enforce “Basic” safety.

I think they need to close the beach down and let the sea lions live their life there. The sea lions do not come to where we live. Why should we Not interfere with their place of living shut the beach down and let the sea lions have the beach

CA should enact a law to protect wildlife at the Cove during pupping season + City of SD should enact an ordinance to cite anyone violating the law. = SD can get $$$ to repair our roads! 🎉

@@ericstandefer9138 I believe - from what the report said - the state (cal park rangers) and local law enforcement (police) cannot issue citations to these selfie hunters until there’s a state law/local ordinance to enforce. Not sure the feds can issue any citations on a state beach.

Federal law supercedes in this case. The problem is that the marine mammal act is one of the most under enforced environmental laws out there. It's well known that damn near no one has ever been prosecuted for it.

I was there about two years ago and seeing the people bothering the sea lions made me furious. I spoke to a young man in the lifeguard station and asked him if he could do anything; he told me he could not. So to anyone who says they "love the sea lions" then prove it by getting off their territory.

@@HBLADY I'm being straight legit. It's atrocious with all the seal crap smell. Seriously. I've been in San Diego since 1968, all my life. La Jolla Cove used to be clean and very special. Since about 2000 or so,… it's gone to shit, due to the sea lions being allowed there, and, the childrens pool about a 1/4 mile south of there, same thing. Get the sea lions out of there. Plus there's the shark attracting factor with the sea lions.

As a san diegan, this has disturbed me to no end!!! You came here for vacation. This is their home!!! How would you like it if someone came into your house and started taking pictures of you and your kids? Second, why isn't the city of LA Jolla getting involved? They wanted to be their own city soo bad, but now it's the city of San Diego needs to deal with it (eye roll).

I doubt you grew up in san diego. You would know that the seals only moved in 20 to 25 years ago. There was a time when they didn't inhabit the cove or children's pool. It's not like they are an endangered species. They need to be harvested.

It's their place. Humans need to just stay away. I use to snorkel there many years ago. Fence it off and not allow tourists to go on that beach. It's their home

I turned 34 this year and I remember going to the cove when I was small and I would rarely see the sea lions there, and would like going there outside of summertime. I don't really know as some people claim to when they first started coming here, but they don't stay around too long. The rest of the year is good for people to hang out here or snorkel, so I've heard, but I've never done snorkeling myself. Regardless, there are so many other beaches to see. As a local who has a modicum of respect for nature, I would leave when I did show up and started seeing sea lions, especially with babies. Never did I walk all the way up to the rocks much less on them at these times. I agree with the people who say the cove should be closed during the time they are with their pups. I saw another comment saying something about human habitat. People don't live in the cove. These people are all ridiculous, locals or tourists. Especially those trying to blame other locals and environmentalists for such issues, and the Tijuana River pollution too?! Go talk to CESPT & the Tijuana government, and still, what will happen that hasn't already in all this time? Tijuana's garbage water infrastructure is constantly getting repaired as it blows out in bits & pieces, but there's no overhaul planned ever, no sewage treatment planning... What do you expect? Miracles? I'm surprised no one has been attacked by the sea lions yet, but wouldn't stick around to find out. Simply leave the sea lions alone and come back another time, people. It's not difficult to observe from a distance either.

These people could go anywhere in the world and be safe and live perfectly happy lives...whereas the Sea Lions have no safe harbor from the sea which they haven't known and relied upon for millenia...if not longer....just give these creatures that...pretend human beings are an advanced superior specie and quit acting like the scourge of the Earth many claim us to be.

The city I'm sure is in control of the stairs down to the beach. They can close the stairs during pupping season and fine and ban violators who are found on the beach. Tourists and watchers can do so from the boardwalk above. But I bet the tourist dollars are more important to them than the lives of the pups and seals being harassed...

Sripps family, of Scripps research, great philanthropists,donated the sea wall sheltered beach to the city of San Diego many generations ago. There were no sea lion colonies on that beach , rmy children and grandchildren swam there. The sea lions began using that small beach in recent years, after the older members of Scripps family died. The present conditions of children's beach is disgusting, people feeding the animals brought them in, and have created a disgusting, unsanitary and dangerous condition.

What a selfish comment San Diego has 70 miles of beach land I'm sure you can find another beach to take your kids. On the other hand, California sea lions have limited coastal areas where they can safely breed and raise their young pups. Sadly selfish people like yourself will lead these animals to extinction.

It's not the sea lions it's the children's pool. The whole beach area is poluted and stinks terrible. It's sad how the environmentalists have no problem with the tj river or la jolla cove when it actually comes to the clean environment

They are not from here. I'm a local. I remember when there was no.seals at the children pool or the cove. They only moved in recently. They need to be removed.

My parents never told me that, and it's funny that you care more about being selfish than protecting wildlife. It's funny how ageist you are too. I was born in 1990, and I was finally taken to visit the cove after I could walk and run well... 🤷🏽‍♀️ We are talking about protected animals that aren't protected anywhere hear enough. It's sad to not be able to frequent beaches I used to swim in often due to various reasons, but I wouldn't seek to be a reason sea lions are dying. I'm more mad about the polluted waters, the sewage smell is worse than the sea lion smell, and much more deadly...
