One of my earlier memories as a kid in the 60s living in the Shores was being awakened in the middle of the night one time and being told a tidal wave was coming and we needed to evacuate immediately. We piled in the station wagon and drove up the hill to where more of the UCSD campus would eventually be built. Used to love heading to Kellogg Park every day after school too. La Jolla will always be a special place.

Both sets of great grandparents on my mom's side vacationed there in the early 19 teens. My grandparents met there and vacationed with their children every summer. Parents honeymooned there and brought my sister and me every summer from Colorado. Now I'm in my 60s and still go every year for a family reunion dinner on the beach of the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

LaJolla is where I took scuba lessons both times , once when I was 21 back in 1978 (NAUI) and again in 2002 with my kids (PADI) . There is a place that even a lot of locals don't know about for tidepools and that's in Point Loma below the cliffs (there is a trail) at Cabrillo National Monument , the trail down is on the right as you approach the memorial . From the top of the hill you can watch the submarines come into the submarine base below you on the left which is always an event with people lined up along the fence to watch .

You’re in my city! If you had just walked down those stairs from where you had coffee-you could’ve walked into another cove. Idk how to explain it direction-wise but it’s a free cove that everyone walks into and usually their shoes get a little wet. Also in La Jolla-you could’ve driven to the top of Mt. Soledad for a nice view of the ocean/La Jolla also. There’s another good gelato shop above the cove called Gelateria Frizzante. You could’ve gone to the UCSD campus and checked out the interesting-shaped library building called Geisel Library. You could’ve seen another interesting architectural building called the Salk Institute-reminds me of Inception. You could’ve gone to Birch Aquarium. Anyway, you went to some good places-eggs Benedict is definitely the thing to order at The Cottage. Better Buzz is actually a chain coffee restaurant and their acai bowls are excellent.

When I lived in La Jolla, in the '70s, the Cove was a sheltered place where young families could spend the day with little kids, in the gentle surf. It was delightful, almost like the shallow end of the baby pool only salt water. Now it is overtaken by noisey, ugly, smelly, fat, pooping...did I say ugly....shark bate. Yuk.

When I was last in La Jolla 20+ years ago there were no Sea Lions on the rocks in Children's Pool area or anywhere obvious. They came during one of our many El Ninos and stayed to frustrate the morning swimming club. ( the swimming club found a workaround)
@dammit945 жыл бұрын
The sea lions were actually there at least 25 years ago. There used to be a 50' cliff called the "Clam" that people would jump off of and surface to the sea lions swimming around them. I used to jump the cliff regularly while growing up there, while in high school.( back in the early to mid 90s) The cliff however has eroded in the ocean since then

It is a common misconception that La Jolla is "north of San Diego." It is surely north of downtown San Diego, and north of Loma Portal, and Ocean Beach, and Mission Beach, and Pacific Beach. La Jolla IS San Diego. It was annexed in something like 1905, 1910, or something like that (quick Wiki lookup would have details, but that's not the point). A rather amusing point is the attitude of some folks with regard to the "prestige" of being in La Jolla or University City (also San Diego). If you travel down La Jolla Village Drive between I-5 and I-805, which hotels get to use a La Jolla address versus a San Diego (University City) address? It's just by zip code. The prestige is the same on one side of the street or the other.

As a La Jolla native, I really appreciate you visiting and sharing my home! I would like to say, however, that The Cottage is not at all the best brunch and it very touristy. If your good with that, cool, but you can also check out La Valencia, Sugar, and Scribe, and Parakeet Cafe (not rlly brunch but it slides). These options may be a little more expensive but you're in La Jolla so expect that!
