I have a question. Today I competed in my second novice tournament (PF) and placed 3rd! But one of the teams we went up against completely pulled a doozie on me and my partner. Speaker 1 of their team gave the opening case, then my partner gave his opening case, then speaker 2 of their team gave HIS opening case in lou of a rebuttal?! like wtf. Are two opening speeches from one team even allowed in the same Public Forum round? Please answer Ps i love ur vids they help a lot

+TheonlyHoneyBadger Congrats on your third place finish! To answer your question, there is no formal rule that restricts debaters from reading an entirely new case in their second constructive. The reason you don't see that strategy used very often is because it isn't very practical. By reading a new case they made two major mistakes. The first mistake they made is that they threw their entire first speech in the garbage. At the conclusion of the second constructives its as if your team had 8 minutes of speaking time, but since they dismissed their first speech they only had 4 minutes to make arguments. This gives them a massive disadvantage and disables them from solidifying their arguments. The second major mistake they made is that they didn't attack your case. Because they can't make new arguments in the rebuttals they just left all of your arguments fly straight through the round completely untouched. It's your duty as a debater to point these things out to the judge. Tell the judge that they didn't extend their previous arguments so they can't be used as voting issues and that they never disagreed with your case so the judge can vote for you on any one of the wonderful arguments you made. This strategy may sound intimidating at first, but it isn't necessarily a strategy as much as it is bad debate. I'm glad you're watching my videos and finding them useful, please let me know if you have any other questions.

+Debate Clash Yes i pointed these things out in my final focus and we won the round regardless. I told the judge that we were going to refute their first opening speech as both of the speeches were practically the same. It definitely stunned me when they delivered their second "opening speech". Completely caught off guard. But thanks!
