OK...Debbie sang, she danced, she wrote, she arranged, she produced and she played instruments. She wasn't just a threat. She was a MENACE. And that menace just happened to write some infectiously melodic songs. OMG! Songwriters today need to hear songs like this...they'd kill for hooks this simple yet this sharp.

I was just having this debate in my mind, because I really used to be Team Tiffany. But, as I am older, and I am a musician, I look back and I think I'm changing teams. Tiffany was a rocker girl, but she was a glorified karaoke singer. Deb had everything you listed.

I will admit that, at the time, she was everywhere to the point of annoyance. I was about 18 and I wasn’t into the pop scene at all. She was constantly on MTV and then suddenly, she wasn’t. She was a victim of some backlash as mainstream music took a huge hit. The 1990’s brought in grunge and gangsta rap. Two things that killed what was left of the 80’s. I remember when Debbie showed up to sing with the Circle Jerks at CBGBs in the mid-90s. I was saddened at seeing her try to find relevance again. I realized then and now what we lost. The girl was super-talented and gifted, and that beautiful era of 80’s innocence was gone. So, I look back at this video and see a brighter, more hopeful time. We’ll never have this peaceful, wonderful time again - and that hurts to think about.

LYRICS: Zappin' it to you, the pressure's everywhere Goin' right through you The fever's in the air, oh, yeah, it's there Don't underestimate the power of a lifetime ahead Electric youth! The power you see the energy comin' up, coming on strong The future only belongs to the future itself And the future is electric youth It's true you can't fight it, live by it The next generation, it's electric We've got the most time to make the world go round Oh, can you spare a dime? Place your bet on our sound, come back to town Don't lose sight of potential mastermind Remember when you were young Electric youth Feel the power, you see the energy comin' up, coming on strong The future only belongs in the hands of itself And the future is electric youth It's true you can't fight it, live by it The next generation, it's electric We do what comes naturally You see now, wait for the possibility Don't you see a strong resemblance to yourself? Don't you think what we say is important? Whatever it may be, the fun is gonna start with me I'm bringing it back Electric youth Feel the power, you see the energy comin' up, coming on strong The future only belongs to the future itself And the future is, electric youth It's true you can't fight it, live by it The next generation, it's electrifying Electric youth Feel the power, you see the energy comin' up, coming on strong The future only belongs in the hands of itself And the future is electric youth It's true you can't fight it, live by it The next generation, it's electric It's electric, it's electric Electric youth Feel the power, you see the energy comin' up, coming on strong The future only belongs to the future itself And the future is electric youth It's true you can't fight it, live by it The next generation Inflation, flirtation Relaxation, elation Generation of An electric youth

Wow. When I was young all I knew of Debbie Gibson was breathy ballads and punchy pop songs; this song (and dance, and the fact that she wrote it, etc) shows her to most definitely be a prodigy! This song could easily be the theme of a musical theater production--it is complex, emotional, and displays her incredible vocal range. Back then, as an ambitious young performer myself, I wrote her off. Was I ever wrong!! Go Debbie!

I wanted that black fringed jacket she wears in this video SO BAD when I was a kid. My mom bought me a jean jacket that I tried to cover with buttons and sparkly things to make it kind of like the one in the video. The 80s were such a fun time to be a kid or a teenager. It's kind of sad that Debbie Gibson wouldn't even be a blip on the charts today because she was so peppy and positive!

She was the biggest teen star in the 80’s. Albums that spent weeks at #1. And she wrote and produced her own stuff. And she was able to do all that without having to wear skimpy outfits and bending over to get people to watch like some of the younger pop stars of today. And this is such a bouncy upbeat joyful pop tune that is still awesome thirty years later.

Hello, I am writing to you from Chile. If what you write is true, I congratulate you, I think it is the right thing to do. I didn't know everything you say about how she was composed her songs and was also a producer. If you allude to J.Lo in your comment, it should also be understood that the world changes and that now they sell other things, there are no longer groups or singers that last over time, the disposable is the immediate.

Funny because I had no idea when this song came out but was struggling to place the year because I knew Debbie Gibson was an 80s singer but the video looks very early 90s and I just guessed 1989 and was right. This video actually looks more 90s than 80s but it's in that time frame (88-92) where it overlaps so that makes sense.

Britney was a little girl in the '80s. Perhaps she looked to Debbie Gibson for some inspiration when she became a singer. Otherwise, I don't want to criticize Britney but it's a fact that D.Gibson was much more talented. In addition to being more in tune, she composed and produced several of her hits, as a teenager, and played several instruments... She even holds the record for the youngest artist (16 years old) to have a single written, produced and singing on her own to reach the top of the Billboard.

Lyrics Zappin' it to you, the pressure's everywhere Goin' right through you The fever's in the air, oh, yeah, it's there Don't underestimate the power of a lifetime ahead Electric youth, feel the power You see the energy comin' up, coming on strong The future only belongs to the future itself And the future is electric youth It's true you can't fight it, live by it The next generation, it's electric We've got the most time to make the world go round Oh, can you spare a dime? Place your bet on our sound, come back to town Don't lose sight of potential mastermind Remember when you were young Electric youth, feel the power You see the energy comin' up, coming on strong The future only belongs in the hands of itself And the future is electric youth It's true you can't fight it, live by it The next generation, it's electric We do what comes naturally You see now, wait for the possibility Don't you see a strong resemblance to yourself? Don't you think what we say is important? Whatever it may be, the fun is gonna start with me I'm bringing it back Electric youth, feel the power You see the energy comin' up, coming on strong The future only belongs to the future itself And the future is, electric youth It's true you can't fight it, live by it The next generation, it's electrifying Electric youth, feel the power You see the energy comin' up, coming on strong The future only belongs in the hands of itself And the future is electric youth It's true you can't fight it, live by it The next generation, it's electric It's electric, it's electric Electric youth, feel the power You see the energy comin' up, coming on strong The future only belongs to the future itself And the future is electric youth It's true you can't fight it, live by it The next generation Inflation, flirtation Relaxation, elation Generation of An electric youth

So many good songs in the 80s. I still play this and im 52, i think the world has run out of music. Wish i was 19 again. You wont hear todays music in 30yrs time in fact you wont hear it in 2 yrs its just noise with no tune or hook. A true artist and there's a reason they're called that as being artistic wasn't just miming to songs written for you whilst you basically got naked to promote it.
