Frango Grelhado "chicken peri peri" become one of the Portuguese main dishes for centuries. It started in Mozambique where the tribes use grill a wild chicken and put peri peri or piri piri is the name of the spices used. The same thing like bacalhau "cod fish" we don't have in the Portuguese sea we have to get from Norway, Finland or Canada but has been used for centuries since the Portuguese discoveries around the world. Your Portuguese friend failed to explain to you. :) Ps: the traditional cod cake (pastéis de bacalhau) doesn't have cheese inside.

renasstagroz thanks for that! There’s a big debate if peri peri chicken is Portuguese or African. I’m not gonna join that debate haha! But I was more concerned about people thinking Nando’s is Portuguese. She explained the history of bacalhau and the traditional pasteis de bacalhau to me. 🙂

@@DebbieOhh Nandos started from a Portuguese family in South Africa. There is thousands of Portuguese residents or descendents in South Africa. They had a small Portuguese shop or restaurant and people use to queue to eat their grilled chicken. A South African investor liked a lot their chicken and saw the opportunity for business and made a deal with them to start what is Nandos today. The other catch was they had to use everything Portuguese. So as you can see they have Portuguese decor and Portuguese dishes and some painting from Africa to remind where everything started. So in Portugal is very common we eat grilled chicken if you walk around in certain streets you will see a small shop selling grilled chicken and potato crisps (pala pala). Potato fries (batata frita) is more at home or certain restaurants as well certain families when they are lazy to cook they buy potato crisps :D (joking... home made style is very tasty). I know this because my mum had a shop and we use to sell grilled chicken in Portugal in the 80's before even Nandos existed. Is very common in my region which is Setúbal. Now you know why is Portuguese, but don't forget it started in Mozambique. For centuries Portuguese took that around the world so it became a Portuguese dish. Today around the world is in every cuisine, different types, different tastes but still a grilled chicken :D.

Haha! Thanks for that. Yep, I’m aware of the history of Nando’s. That is why they’re called “Portuguese-style” and not Portuguese restaurant. The chicken is inspired by the way Portuguese/African’s do their chicken. But technically, when you go to Portugal the peri peri chicken is not like how Nando’s do it, right? They don’t even like spicy food. To clarify, I love Nando’s. 😂

Nandos is like KFC, they create a style for a business chain. Yes they have, even better but it will depends where you go to eat the grilled chicken. The variety of sauces at Nandos are marketing but you will find different sauces in some grilled chicken places in Portugal too. As well we make a sauce to moisture the chicken while you grill it. If you want your chicken with spices you need to ask first. You have to marinate your chicken first, you will find different versions some better than the others. My mum was doing a better chicken than Nandos. 😊
