I got into Dire Straits DEEPLY just as I was transitioning from a beginner guitarist to an intermediate guitarist. This was in the very early 1980s. I was about 18, 19 years old. Back in the day we used to learn guitar licks off the record. We'd listen to a lick, lift the needle off the record, try to sus it out on guitar, and repeat -- over and over again. It's a real treat learning guitar licks from these KZbin videos. (This cat is particularly good.) But there's a lot to be said for learning licks the "old fashioned way". It was great "ear training". It was also great for figuring out where on the neck of the guitar, and on which strings, the licks were played. I never quite nailed Knopfler's "chicken pickin'" technique. It's absolutely integral. And it's really difficult. (Those "rakes" too!) Interesting note: When I learned this intro I wasn't aware that parts of it were played with a delay. Consequently, I played the delays as part of the licks. I incorporated that technique into my playing ever since.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, I too grew up learning solos / songs by listening (rather than reading) and it's still the way I prefer to do it.

Great lesson. Love the first album and what's also cool is that my first name is Stuart and my second name is Mark! Learnt this by ear off the record ages ago....or so I thought...Great to pick up a few subtle touches from your lesson.. Oh how about doing the main solo and the fills for this. Thanks again
