Here I am installing Debian 11 with 2 partitions and zram swap.
The goal is to install Debian with a minimal install. No desktop environment.
The minimal install is so I can use the scripts written to tiling windows managers mostly, but maybe custom desktop or two in the future.
Software:
Distro: Debian Stable Linux

Thank you for this fantastic tutorial! I recently have struggled with Ubuntu/Mint/etc. running too slow in my VM, and a Minimal Debian installation is exactly what I needed. Your set of videos are super helpful to me, and I hope to become a hardcore Debian user going forward! Hope you continue to add to this great series.

antiX base flies in a VM. the drawback is it can be a lot harder to install packages as it offers only a fraction of what normal apt has. But, you can download .debs, tar packages, and AppImages - the latter being the easiest usually - as long as the package doesn't need config files edited.

I just found your channel and I love that you focus a lot on Debian. I've been a linux user for 15 years and have only used Debian as a desktop distro on and off over the years. I'm trying to stop using Mint and use Debian instead but I find that for some reason I'm having issues with trying to get Nvidia drivers and slick-greeter and plymouth to work well together. It's so easy to give up and just go back to a ready made distro. I'm gonna keep trying though.

Drew - great vid. I never went down the "expert" mode but reviewing what you have done (to me) seems not much different than going through the normal install. Obviously not installing anything X related. I too put a few vids out. albeit a good bit of time elapsed. Like you, Deb is my daily driver but with Sid. Have been doing that for many years and also did a 2 year stint with Arch. Anyways, nice work and its nice to see a Debian-centric channel

Nope. Not that different. Just a few differences in installing. Just spent the last several videos using Sid and XFCE. Thanks for the encouragement.

I love Debian Stable. But if you want newer applications, you could go with Debian Testing. But I'm just fine with the behind versions. If anything I need updated for a good reason. I would just build from source to get the newest one that way. I rarely have to do that, but that is a option to take.

I have installed debian (minimal) on my laptop, there seems to no internet connection, nor is network manager available. I tried the WPA supplicant WPA/WPA2 section from debian documentation but the DHCP client was not installed and attempting to connect to the internet threw an error stating that my wlan is soft blocked.

Thank you. What is the difference between a minimal install and installing from a live ISO?
@JustAGuyLinux
@JustAGuyLinux Жыл бұрын
The live ISOs allow you to run a desktop version of the software prior to install so you can see what the end product will look like on your pc.

I did a series on xfce on the channel and used a script to install what I thought were the min packages for a min install of debian xfce. In case you are interested go to the github.com/drewgrif/debian-installers and look at the xfce script

Do you need to prepare usb stick somehow or just download iso on it. I did just that and the computer did not recognise to boot from the stick

That won't work. You can use balena etcher software to create the ISO.

I built a new PC to play Steam games thanks to Proton on Debian. During installation I do not create the root account but an administrator account "sudo". At the end of the terminal installation I create a standard user account that I use to start Steam and play games. I need to buy a new nvme SSD with more space for games and I would like to format and partition it the right way "separate partitions" to optimize the system best for games. How do you recommend me to partition a 1tb nvme SSD?

Is there a Debian distro image that is headless. Something like Raspbian OS Lite. I find the Debian website very confusing, and not user friendly. I have a old Intel nuc and want to run docker and open media vault. It seems that Ubuntu is not debian, and OMV does not like that.
@JustAGuyLinux

I am unaware. This might be beyond my skillset but I think you need to research how to preseed the debian installation.

@@JustAGuyLinux They're so much fun! The OSes are definitely more limited, but overall I've had a very good experience with it. I made sure to buy mine at the end of last year because I knew there would be a shortage. I would say the one thing I really like is the convenience. I have multiple USB sticks all with different OSes, and it's so easy to switch between them. I even have a server image set up as a NAS.

I'm doing it EASIER--- Im going XEBIAN---- vanilla Debian with XFCE and that's it... .then can do whatever I like. BUT- I also now have SPARKY linux-- which is basicaly just debian- with my KDE on it..
@genkiferal7178
@genkiferal7178 Жыл бұрын
I just heard about Sparky today - actually saw the screenshots (rice) on Pling Store, so looked it up. Are there lots of glitches and errors or is it truly a finished product? I wanted to try fluxbox on it or maybe. My main system is Debian XFCE, but it is still too heavy or bloated for my tastes. I set up a minimal install a year ago and put xfwm on it instead and a few xfce programs and barely noticed a difference - except that it was a far smaller (GB) set up. xfwm is related to xfce.
@davidwayne9982

@@genkiferal7178 I absolutley LOVE Sparky!! I installed it several months ago when EBUZZ reviewed it.. and have had it ever since. It installed PERFECTLY- with NO issues AT ALL, and I've had NONE since (except what I CAUSED-- but with sparky EASILY fixed- even MY stupid error!!! ha) It's beautiful- FAST-- VERY LIGHT weight-- and the KDE shines on it!!! I have it as a dual boot now- with REBORN OS- because I never had any luck with arch based stuff-- I'm learning. Reborn DID have issues for me--and it wasn't suppose to. Wouldn't play dvd- because even though I checked the box- the codecs never loaded. I couldn't access my secondary drive (STORAGE- for data etc. which I HAD to have)..until I changed the "PERMISSIONS" in command line- which I'd never done. Never had to do ANY of that with SPARKY!!! I ALWAYS go back to it too- after playing with the others..

@@davidwayne9982 thanks. I'll go look to see if there is a minimal install so i can have only Fluxbox or xfwm on it. Then I'll try it on a VM for a while and watch Conky to see what resources it takes. My goal is to get a super-light, super distro to put on an old laptop to charge with a solar panel. Klaus Schwab says the electrical grid could go down, so I want to be ready.

There is what they call MINIMAL GUI version-- and you can install whatever you like!!! They have an EXCELLENt website with all kinds of documentaion JUST no Sparky-- not like so many that have long winded articles that don't even mention their product.. IT's got a RESCUE versoin too--- get that and put it on USB-- to use on anything that needs help.... I don't know about the virtual box stuff-- never did that--- I go real hardware on my installs-- and the resources are VERY low-- about the only ones lower might be ANTIX or something like that- with nothing BUT WM.. Good luck to you and EnJOY!!!

I'm gonna try this and add Fluxbox, but is there a really, really stable distro with just the minimal or net install than is without systemd? The closest I found is antiX, but i cannot seem to get it installed in a partition, but have put it on flashdrives and VMs several times - hoping to learn so that I can get it on "bare metal". Is there minimum systemd-free distro? I am trying Devuan and even its closest kin Fluxuan, but they aren't as stable or error-free as antiX.
@JustAGuyLinux
@JustAGuyLinux Жыл бұрын
I was going to suggest Devuan if you are looking for systemd-free AND debian based. I did run artixlinux (arch based) for a while and you can choose between openrc, runit. I would definitely look at MX Linux Fluxbox
@genkiferal7178
@genkiferal7178 Жыл бұрын
@@JustAGuyLinux MX has too much crap added to it. I've been playing with or fighting with Devuan for 2 days now and, after install, the apt or cli breaks - i get so many error messages. FF crashes a ton, so I added Palemoon instead, but even that sometimes crashes on Devuan - just not nearly as much as FF. I did notice that Falkon may not have crashed as much on Fluxuan, but I didn't use it as much because the cli on that is also broken - cannot "sudo apt install" or remove packages.
