Huge thank you for this! I'm new to Linux and never used a windows manager. So cool to have all these WMs in one set up with the extra options. Never used someones github to do something like this before. I've been on Debian 12 (first disro I've ever tried) with the KDE DE for about 6 months and my windows 11 M.2 drive hardly gets used at all.

Nice review. Two things, Vim mode doesn't seem to work with geany 1.38. Second, do you know how to change the palette colors of the terminal? or colorscheme? It only allows changing background and forground colors

I know this comment may not be read by you. First of all, I want to thank you for helping me do the best Debian installation I've ever done. I wish you and your family all the best. But I really wanted you to help me in some way. I would like to do the encryption at the time of installation with BTRFS too. If you could record a short video showing how it's done, or send me a link to an article so I can do it, I'd be very grateful. If you have any books to recommend, it would be a great help. Thank you for all your knowledge, you are very special! 🔥 🔥 🔥

Great guide, but the same way it hit me when I saw Jays video I just feel that this right here is why people are a bit hesitant to NC. It’s a bit overcomplicated and all over the place. Sure you could use Snap or TurnKey or whatever type of container you’d like. I get why people are using it for a bit and then when it (inevitably) breaks or become sluggish they stop using it. I really want to love NC, because the fundamental idea of it is great and there really isn’t that many alternatives. Let’s just call it more of a love/hate relationship nowadays after many years of trial and error. Right now I’m trying it out on NixOS and this approach of running it in an immutable OS in a VM will definitely be my way going forward. If anything breaks it’s just so much easier to revert back. Either through a snapshot in Proxmox or within NixOS. I feel that Nextcloud really would benefit of going sort of the same way as Home Assistant went with HAOS. Bundle everything up in an immutable operating system so that the user just have to download and install one ISO. It fits right in with the AIO path they’re on right now as well. Keep the normal install bineries and containers available parallell for those that like more granular control. Just like HA. Nextcloud Atomic looks like a nice project going forward. I’m not sure if NC themself are behind it…

DUDE. I had to thank you, not only for the well explained vid but also because for the 4 and a Half years I've been using linux, I had NO IDEA that CTRL+L cleared the terminal. for literal years ive always been under the impression that I had to type "clear"... you've just significantly increased my efficiency. thank you.

Great video! Thanks for the play-by-play. Very clear all around and super helpful! Like someone else has said, I really appreciate you demonstrating a real system failure. It’s very confidence inspiring to break and fix the system reliably like this 😂 I am curious why you didn’t use the same btrfs mounting options that you used in the original version of this video eg ssd, discard=async, space_cache=v2. Just curious if those options are needed anymore or if you were using a different setup. Thanks a ton for approachable content

New Sub here, Can I request you make a video about snapper / snapper rollback on Debian in the future using this method also without encryption. As what I have known you can easily back up after the base install using snapper when there is no DE yet.

I'm amazed how easy and straightforward this video is, And the big thing here is that you actually tried to simulate the actual failing of a system which I don't find on the previous tutorials that I watched so it resulted in problems when I restore the backup especially during boot, but this tutorial is complete and I am much thankful to you. This will help me big time!

Getting into this error at the very last steps when dealing with warning. Specifically, when I try : PART 3 : 2. Detected some missing optional indices. I ran into this exact issue and if you haven't already fixed it you need to type the exact thing he does in the video because the documentation is different and frankly a little broken because its different than the video... Part 3 Step 1 has a "Then" step that was removed in the documentation. I had to manually type that line out. "sudo chown root:www-data….” run the missing indices command then reverse it like he does in the video back too "www-data:www-data…." That seemed to work for me but I'm not an expert. I'm still trying to fix whatever is wrong when I add the "overwriteprotocol" in the config.

I know this is a bit old but just wanted to say thanks for telling me what I knew in a way that made me believe what I know. I've been putting off updating to Bookworm for some time for my T420 but the way you clearly reminded me how simple the process and to deal with it confidently. I've been doing this since Weezy and still cringe sometimes. I'm glad to have seen your video yesterday and just bit the bullet and (finally) got with the Bookworm program. If not just to finally get access to the the git integration in Kate. Apart from some new weirdness to do with asking for better permissions (apper won't request my sudo password anymore and just fails to update if I don't run it as a sudoer) everything is much snappier. Thanks again. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your content. Oh, btw, the thing that sold it for me was when you pulled out micro make your changes to sources.list. I added that in to use on a raspi box run with a zero that I use to test sensors etc on a boat and thought, "yup, I'll see what he has to say." Granted I use nano still for simple changes but do appreciate the mouse interaction with a shell editor now and again.

Well, what an entertaining and interesting, fun afternoon I’ve had. Having sorted out the problems I had getting FileBot to run correctly on any dwm installation on my test machine and thanks to Drew kindly advising me the correct way to change the Date and Time settings on the slstatus bar, I’ve now been able to confidently install Drew’s customised dwm to my main machine. I’ve spent a happy afternoon configuring parts of it to my preference. THANK YOU DREW for sharing your knowledge and giving me a deeper understanding of how dwm functions.

Your videos are very helpful. Thank you! One thing that irks me (and is my issue) is when people say slash for a back slash and vice versa. See about the 4 min. mark “ ”. I’m sure that I have other issues that others have already mastered, just ask my wife. 😉 Also, I noticed in the comments that you said you now use DWM. Maybe your video where you say that you love/use XFCE, is a newer video? In any case, I would love to try out multiple WM options and I believe that is a huge reason people are drawn to Linux. I remember tinkering with as many Win95/98 colors and border settings as I could. But alas, there is work to do! That’s about the only good thing about Windows, they only let you work. 🤣🤣🤣 Where’s my old Erector set and Lincoln logs? 😉

Don’t know what I did wrong, I’ll have to try again, but I loaded the customised Drew DWM, but all I got on login was a terminal screen in the top left corner. If I type DEM then dwm starts but if I close the terminal it restarts to lightdm login screen. Trying again.

I love Debian very very much but one quirk that I just can not find how to fix is the annoying "Welcome to Grub" that flashes in the top left of the screen when I want a nice modern looking boot experience like 99% of other distros. Any chance you could make a video about how to achieve this on Debian? I have looked everywhere it seems and it basically seems darn near impossible and that sucks. This seems like a simple and reasonable thing to want from a distro. I've been on Linux for 16 years but I like to keep things simple and friendly to keep stress out of my life.
