The questions the elders asked me made me feel like they were getting some sick thrill by not only asking these questions but by listening to the answers as well.

That was great! Comedy is a fantastic way to get your point across. So hard to believe I was trapped in this nonsense of a cult for 30 years. Thankfully I managed to escape.

Susan, do you remember those awful theocratic ministry tests at the end of every month? Even as a 7 yr old I had to do it, used to panic me so bad. Those questions were so hard right? Mandy x
@SusanGaskin8 жыл бұрын
LOL YES - the "written review"! They used to hand out these wooden boards for you to use as a support for the test paper and there was so much profanity on them!
@cameronreekie65198 жыл бұрын
Susan Gaskin we never had the boards but I do remember thinking phew! At the true or false section at least my chances were 50/50 there. My dad used to make us prep for them so there's me doing 11 GCSE exams including two languages and then you had to revise for that crap 💩 on top! Crappy crappy religion, and boring too. Mandy x

It is hard to believe that we used to believe all this crap, because Deborah hits it 100% on the head. Humour is a great way to explain such cult behaviour and religious bigotry.

There’s like 5 more of these stories available online for anyone who’s curious. She tells the story of finding her biological mom & sisters (she was adopted) & the search for her biological father after her dads passing. I had to go to Deborah Frances White’s website. Just google, “Deborah Frances White Rolls the Dice” And all the episodes are on there. The MOST disappointing part is that there aren’t more episodes! This woman is so gifted when it comes to comedy I just wish there was more (stand up/storytelling) material of hers available. I think she has a radio show in the UK but I have no idea how I could listen to it here in the US. If anyone knows let me know! 😉❓👍🏻

It's fucked up that everyone laughed at the part where the elder or whatever said, "Brother Ryan, it sounds like you've been doing some independent thinking, because it sound far fetched, but they'll actually say that. I was a JW myself and not only have I heard elders say that, but there are actually Watchtower articles that speak against independent thinking. It's fucked beyond belief.

Debs that was so funny but also tragic because the reality ends in ruined lives. I thank God I woke up to this religion nonsense!. I remember one night at the kingdom hall and I was copying the monthly "written review" of the person sat next to me (which they don't do anymore because it stimulated brain activity.) Anyway the elder at the front heard the photo copier and stopped the meeting and said Brother ! Am I stupid? Or were you copying??. I said we'll.....Yes ..and..No. That was it, he said I'll speak with you later in "the room"!!! So there I was, armed with nothing more than my pocket sized bible against painter, a window cleaner, and a millionaire who just happened to run a "theocratic warehouse full of brothers and sisters on minimum wage while at the same time giving talks on keeping your life"simple". I think in his mind that meant only having one warehouse one wine cellar and one Porche (parked outside). The conversation started with him shaking his head...and saying...Brother..Brother... Brother!!? to which I replied ..."I'm the one in the middle you drunken slob!! armed with his "secret book" (which incidentally is as secret as two clicks on Google) He grimaced and said authoritatively You know we could expel you?!! I thought for a moment of the ramifications and said ...you know if you ever did... you would have to catch me and eat me first and brother you know the bible condemns eating blood. Realising that I was not going to acquiesce. They said they would have to get in touch with the "society" and apparently it transpired that they made no progress because the elder who rang was talking with the operator for half an hour before he realised he had dialed the wrong number and was in fact talking to his building society. The advice from them was "you need to get out a bit more". (acnowlwdgements to Emo Phillips for quotes ) Great comedy Debs I love it. take care.
@realPromotememedia7 жыл бұрын
yea but the secret book has big spaces in it for the elders to write in (at elder school) their own notes (word for word what they are told to write) so the instructions aren't actually printed, they are "their own notes" nothing to do with anyone else! ;-)

I have met elders who behave like they are described here by Deborah - gormless, petty, sycophants. They can be very infuriating men. It is weird, you know, because the Jehovah's Witnesses (no I'm not one) are ostensibly a group committed to the principle of the priesthood of all believers, wherein there is no professional clerical class. There is on-the-job training for for those handpicked by the elders to become elders, but they are all volunteers with other jobs. The sad truth is that life inside the JWs is just simply nothing like the ideals the society is supposedly founded upon. That bell tolling for each 'New Light' news flash is quite a brilliant cue to wake you up to the absurdity in this religion, and many others of a similar ilk. So very full of contradictions. And the dating school stuff - hilarious! Look, its a very clever piece, fabulous wring to create superb radio. I am happy for Ryan, for having accepted the help that made his escape from the cult possible. My only concern is that the Elders in the final encounter, as bad as they might appear to be in the humorous retelling of the events, have no voice, no right of reply, no chance to redress the way in which they have been lampooned. Perhaps Deborah feels they deserve what they get, because of the way they are, and because of the way she feels she was treated in her adolescence when she was a devout follower of this cult. And that may be a totally valid justification for orchestrating this story. But when you think about, there is no way you can equate a woman as educated and capable as Deborah, an Oxford graduate pray tell, with a plumber and a window cleaner from Vancouver. As I see it, this was never a fair contest. Those elders were completely but discreetly outgunned from the outset, and it was not they who sprung a trap. That's what Deborah did, so that we can be the beneficiaries of the laughs at those men's expense. She's played the female victim card, but in truth the hapless victims in this situation are those men. Maybe they don't deserve any sympathy, but in any power calculation I can conjure, the feminist Deborah definitely comes out on top. And they will probably never know how stupid she's made them look to the world, for merely doing what they thought was right in this context. And that's also probably a good thing! My advice for you when at any time you are stuck in a room with a bunch of mean elders - sit quietly, get on your smartphone, and order a pizza delivery to share with them. Things might become a little less confrontational! ;)
