@FoolOfATuque
@FoolOfATuque 3 ай бұрын
@@jimurrata6785I think you misunderstood the reasoning for all this. It’s about creating efficiencies that can’t exist with a traditional ICE vehicle. An internal combustion engine is typically efficient at a certain RPM. Variable RPMs like when you’re rowing through gears is quite inefficient. So they shoot for that RPM when designing the generator which maximizes efficiency. So the engine in the final truck will run at a constant rpm. Which lowers fuel consumption. That’s benefit 1. In a traditional ICE vehicle you have brake pads that turn the energy you put into getting the vehicle moving into heat. Hybrids have electric motors on their axles. A motor that is spun by the wheels will generate electricity which recovers some of the energy instead of losing it to heat and also creates drag slowing the car. This is called regenerative braking. That’s benefit two. When you’re running a traditional ICE engine you also idle at stop lights which is very inefficient. This design will eliminate that since it has electric heat and AC. It’s not about defying the laws of thermodynamics. It’s about making a system more efficient.
@jimurrata6785

You guys are putting in the work and it's amazing how much more thorough you seem to be than the big manufacturers and how great it is that you're willing to attempt this. Manufacturers are after that dollar. They really couldn't care about emissions unless there was good money to be made at someone else's expense. If this could be sold as a lot for trucks I bet you could sell a bunch because I know for one that there's plenty of people out there who have good trucks they've had for a long time they don't want to replace with new who are worried that the EPA branch of the SS will make vehicles we currently own illegal due to emissions when it's really about control.

Read up on CAFE Standards MPG fines by year…manufacturers are on the hook for $150 per 1 mpg per vehicle sold under the mandated target…if they miss it 10 mpg…it costs them $1150. If they sell a million vehicles the fine is over $1B…still think they aren’t motivated?

But the thing is, they've had 20 years to develop hybrid diesel technology but instead they focused on either crossovers and large trucks or full electric. They did away with vehicles like the small to midsize segment to chase the dollar instead of thinking ahead. They're so far behind in technology in all fronts because they thought their cash cows were going to last forever but they didn't.

Thank you guys for doing something that is real, that is actually going to be effective in the long run, something that makes sense given where we are now. I'm an engineer and I've been after this concept for a long time. Given some of the problems you've been having with the e-axles and fitment, I wonder if it would be worth it to get a hold of a Ford Lightning or a Silverado EV and maybe work backwards a little bit. Maybe you could drop the Repower in the "frunk" of the Lightning. Seems to me that you might be able to develop this technology working from both ends of the spectrum. There may be EV owners out there that also realize how this could benefit them and they'd like the option to be able to fill up at the thousands of gas stations that already exist instead of waiting for our electrical grid to collapse under the weight of everyone plugging their vehicles in a night. At the very least, you grab a Lightning and figure out what axles Ford and/or Chevy are using for their EVs. I hate to cheat off other people's homework here but it also seems wrong the re-invent the wheel, so to speak.

I do engineering in HVAC controls making buildings more efficient. Finally someone is working on something that's actually feasible for transportation. The electrical needs of a fleet of Tesla semi trucks is enormous. You would need a power plant for a large truck stop to charge them. Go look at the size of the transformers at these car charging stations. It might even be larger than the transformer that feeds a commercial building. Infrastructure and battery storage wise we are no where close to going full electric. Diesel electric is the way to go between now until battery technology improves. Ive been following Edison from day 1....was SUPER happy to see Deboss come on board to do this... one step at a time. Ive decided in my own head that passenger vehicles will likely all go full BEV but anything HD.....anything that does "work" will become hybrid....it just makes sense efficiency and performance wise. I know that Edison is focused on specialized trucks...and while that is good to start with... I think what we will see is emissions, efficiency and performance ALL improve even on an over the road semee ;) But I digress, back to the HD pickups. I look forward to seeing the testing on the small diesel...and then on existing pickup engines....it will be fantastic to see all of the comparison data......though to be honest, you are REALLY going to have to put in some serious differences for someone to yank out their existing driveline and put in a generator and electric motors. FAR more likely to find someone with a blown engine/spun bearing, bent rod on a pickup....or an ambulance...or a delivery van.... something like that. Speaking of delivery vans....those dodge sprinters might be a good next target for you. Good luck, cant wait for the next video!

I feel like this engine would be absolutely perfect for a 1500 2nd gen. Hybrid kit aside. It would give you near the same performance with significantly better emissions without increasing weight nearly at all. I know y’all are big full size truck fans but the smaller half ton trucks need some love too, and imagine if we normalized putting small Diesel engines in them.

I've always wanted a system like this from a big manufacturer. It just makes sense. If train locomotives use this idea, I'm pretty sure it could work for trucks. Will be following with interest and might buy a kit if I can figure out a shop space for the swap.

I’m curious if the fuel mileage comparison on the dyno somehow takes the truck’s mass into account, or is this test only a comparison of drivetrain efficiency for the same load curve.

Rich, it’s amazing the speed at which you guys are working at. I really don’t know how I feel about China, but I’m very excited for all of Edison’s ideas “and yours” to go from paper to field testing. Thank you for being so transparent. This will pay off in the long run when people start learning about Edison and your ideas. Great job. I wish I had your brain. Can’t wait to see finished product.

@@cthulhuaid2998 Exactly, following Edison and checking in on this when I can. Edision went out of it's way to get stuff made here, but it simply ISN'T. So now they have to deal with the necessary evil in order to actually make and see if this is possible. And things are looking good so far.

If you can get those axles under land cruisers underground you could have all the work you could want. I've tested the fully electric land cruisers underground and they're woefully underperforming. Ventilation and electrical supply are huge bottle necks underground so if you can reduce both this could be a game changer.

Super excited about this project, both on a personal level and in terms of it's potential impact on automotive industry! I have a preference for smaller trucks and from the first time I saw anything about Edison I first thought how neat it would be to have this kind of system in a pickup, particularly something like a dakota, ranger etc. Glad to be around to see the progress!

If this proof of concept works out the way we suspect, I can see it being scaled to fit other vehicle applications. Imagine a passenger car with something like a little 1.3L Kubota diesel running at a constant RPM as a generator. It might be able to break into the 80 MPG range. This kind of development and progress is exciting.

Absolulty love this project and the concepts! Thank you for taking the time to test all of the variations. Intriguing to say the least. I know the E-axles are designed to work with the heavy duty truck sector but i'm curious if this application would work on the heavy duty van sector as well? E250/350 sprinters etc. Might not have the engine area? Love to hear your thoughts. Best of luck as the project developes!

Hope to see the final prototypes tested for low traction and offroad type uses. Does the e-axle behave like an open diff or a limited slip? Could software provide a 'locker' type feature? Will you still be able to select 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive to 'disable' the front axle? Does the e axle (due to have having full torque at 1 rpm) eliminate the need for 'low range'?
@Sah-o5m
@Sah-o5m Ай бұрын
These are legitimate questions. The e-axle(s) that are currently being tested are pre production prototypes with 1 motor per axel and open diffs. They are temporary. The e-axles that are going into the production semi's have dual motors per axel. One for each wheel. With computer controlled traction control with different settings. The production semi's have no transmission and essentially 1 gear. So by sizing the ring gear in the pumpkin, a semi could be geared for Highway, or Off Road, but not both. It will be many many months before we see the production dual motor e-axles for the pickups. I do not know how they're handling the final drive ratio.
