Interview recorded - 17th of April, 2024
On this episode of the WTFinance podcast I had the pleasure of welcoming back Clive Thompson. Clive's entire career was in wealth management, mainly Swiss private banking. This provides him a unique insight into central banks.
During our conversation we spoke about why we didn't experience a banking crisis in 2023, whether it could be a risk moving forward, governments getting poorer while someone else is getting richer, stickier than expected inflation, financial repression, precious metals and more. I hope you enjoy!
0:00 - Introduction
2:16 - Should we be worried about further banking crisis?
11:21 - Light at end of the tunnel darkening?
13:20 - Maybe long end of yield curve to increase further
15:01 - Stickier than expected inflation?
16:31 - Banks under more pressure?
28:33 - FED and other central banks moving to financial repression?
33:36 - Is this why we’ve seen an increase in precious metals?
43:33 - One message to takeaway from our conversation?
Clive has 47 years of experience in finance & wealth management. This encompasses structuring and advice relating to quoted investments, Private Equity investments, family businesses, tax, residency, real estate, inheritance, Wills, legal, lending, Trusts, Companies and Foundations and all kinds of personal and private advice. He has been actively involved for decades in the arena of Trust structures. This often involved negotiating and discussing the contracts relating to the sale of family companies.
Clive's latest position before retirement was as Managing Director in the Anglophone Private Clients Department of Union Bancaire Privée, UBP SA, based in Geneva. He was responsible for wealth management services provided to a small number of wealthy English and French speaking families.
Clive continues to remain very active in the world of wealth, with a strong focus on Private Equity, and direct Equity Investing via the global stock markets. His passion is the financial analysis of Balance Sheets, P&Ls, Cash Flow and business projections. Clive loves examining business opportunities, like Private Equity, and digging into the fundamentals of quoted companies to achieve a market beating performance.

Clive is by FAR the best financial guy on the internet. In addition to impressive knowledge, he has an outstanding ability to convey knowledge in an understandable, granular fashion. But the cherry on the top is his delight in his subject and that fact that he's a gentleman. He's such a gem.

Clive always is such a wonderful knowledgeable guest to have on anyone's show this is the third time I've heard him. I always have to go back and listen to the program two or three times to make certain I understand everything he is so deep, but he also conveys things at such a level that someone like me can understand what he's saying. Great show!

Great interview, thank you. It's interesting that the M2 money supply has been trending down over the last couple of years, yet the CPI and other price measurements ("inflation") are still trending up. I guess the shocking amounts of c0vid-funds are still sloshing around the economy, still looking for a home.

6:25 "...a continued reluctance of employees to go back to work (offices)". Well that's a very skewed way to put it. For decades, employees have been forced into an oppressive, school-like slavery camps; AKA offices. In 2020, they were forced to stay at home due to a fak€ health scam, of which the corporate world was very much a part of facilitating. Monday to Friday office incarceration camps are one of the worst things to emerge in recent human history (along with its associated schooling system, pushed heavily by the elites and Rockefe!!ers to program children's subconscious minds so that as adults, they will submit to corporate slavery). Boomers really need to get real with this crap. There was no complaining from corporations in 2020. And many of these corporations got rid of employees who wouldn't take the arm-inject!on thing. Many employees who never previously worked from home realised in 2020 that they had been going along with a slavery system for years, and felt the liberation of not having to slave their way commuting into an office, while also realising they could be just as productive, if not MORE productive working from home.
@woofmeow247
@woofmeow247 Ай бұрын
What Clive could have said is: "Corporations realised in 2020 that productivity was just as high with employees working from home, and actually reduced operating costs (i.e. electricity, heating, canteen food, etc.). So, the world has realised a more effective model for employment involving a significant amount of remote working, and now corporations need to find a way to adapt, which is placing pressure on the banking system.".

Thanks for your reply @woofmeow247 to my comment on this and for suggesting I have a read of yours. You take the issue, justifiably so, to a broader context, and I agree. There are so many commenting on Thompson’s brilliance, and he may be. If he is, I find his propaganda and bias to mask whatever brilliance he may possess. Someone said he’s a regular on maneco (sp?), a channel I like. But I don’t remember encountering such a perspective on his channel. I’ll watch out for it.

@@mttaylor129 Thanks mt. I very much enjoy Clive's interviews. He delivers a very measured take on things in a very amicable manner. The main thing I notice is the lack of alarm he has for the blatant malevolence of the CBDC agenda, as well as many other agendas of the ruling banking powers. In one of his Maneco64 interviews, he described a post-reset scenario in glowing terms, saying that it will be a very prosperous time with the "everyday man" and governments free from debt. Nothing could be further from the truth. People need to look at the behaviour of governments in Mar/Apr 2020 onward and never forget. There is no benevolence about any of the intended post-reset world; digital IDs, mandated injections, censorship, political prisoners, social credit system, an even bigger wealth gap, etc.

The FED said that banks will fail, smaller banks. The trouble with small bank failures is that it negatively impacts main street. The mega banks alsways get bailed out even with corruption and shadow banking. Ordinary people will be hard pressed to maintain their wealth.

yes, banks create money by lending. The treasury, as far as I know, prints the physical money. However, the Fed does not directly create money.

Clive says “reluctance of employees to go back to work,” strongly implying that they’re NOT WORKING, when the context of his remark is employees WORKING from home. A slam on employees and a sign that management isn’t managing work at all, but rather location. And he’s not the only one talking and thinking like that! It makes no sense for an employer to demand employees return to offices in order to support office landlords and the local businesses. So Clive claims employers are supposed to charitably support the landlords. Would he be as charitable to employees, would he keep them employed rather than downsize?

I thought working from home would strongly be a factor in more people being able to work from home, or hot desk after the 2008 crash. It was partially instigated in some businesses who wished to manage their office costs. The problem is that some bosses can only appreciate productivity when they can see their employees working and many office jobs have very loose and difficult to measure effort to productivity relationships. AI is going to impact on this sector going forward so I expect commercial real estate to be flat for some time.
@danhirz5498

There is also an inefficiency factor of people working from home, which is why employees are fighting so hard to continue it. Employers aren't stupid either.

No!! The poor don’t get “richer” because the government has to borrow money, even though you slip in the e Words Social Security. It’s the people who buy the debt instruments and get paid interest who get rich on govt debt. Would you say that weapons makers get rich from govt debt? No. Weapons makers get rich selling weapons to the govt, and that can put the govt in debt. Again, it’s those who buy the govt’s debt instruments who get rich on the interest the govt pays them (assuming the govt doesn’t default).
