I have three favorite quilt shops & a couple more I visit. Of them all 1 advocates your rulers & the others use some of them. Have learned how to solve several issues from #1 shop using your rulers. Now in process of getting the rulers I feel I'll use most often. Squared square is one of them. Have 2 magic wands!

I know it might be a little tacky to toot my own horn here, but honestly, the wing clipper is probably the best tool I've designed. It is an absolute game changer when it comes to making flying geese, and you'll never cringe again when you see them in a pattern you want to make 💜

Deb, flying geese have always been 5he bane of my existence! I already use the method to make mine you teach in the video, but trimming them with a regular ruler is a pain. I have a new found respect for specialty rulers now! Your's at least! I might not avoid patterns that include fg's after I get one! Thank you so much for your time and knowledge!

I have seen this technique to make the geese before but, what I really like about your video is that you do each step. You don't assume that I know what you mean. Really good teaching. I also like the tool you recommend and have put it down as a future purchase. I like the idea of a chart to get the unit that I need for my quilt. Thank you

OK Deb, I'm here to find your tricks. I just finished making 96 FG units and in 2 different fabrics as well as 96 HST for a quilt. I've been making both units for over 22 years, with poor to fair results. I recently , maybe 2 years, have been using the 4 at a time method, and yet I'm always off on my units. tonight, I put one of my blocks together, fudging every unit to piece. How frustrating. I have many rulers, including two easy FG rulers, and yet until this moment, I never heard to 'nudge' my small squares. THANKS. I am not going to toss my units, but I am making notes for the next quilt. My daughter asked if I was making her a new table topper or runner, well, yes I will make smaller items for her and then cut the quilt again using my new notes. Wish I could send you pictures of the mess I made, perhaps you could show others what not to do. lol.

Hi carylanne, how did your geese come out? I know it's an old video, but thought I'd chance a comment as yours is only 3 months old. I had your problem but I didn't make a zillion pieces, just kept trying on practice every now & then but definitely over a few yrs. Found out the major problem is that the thread in the seam takes up space so the geese can't come out exact if the fabrics are cut exactly and the sewing is on the line. The tutor knows this wh is why she said to skip a bit on the edges. In another vid on geese, she said use your best tools. I discovered if you can use your finest needles and finest thread, you will have a better fit as the seam won't use up so much room. Another cheat that worked well for me was to draw the line then sew just inside it. I think this is equal to the tutor skimping on the small squares by laying them "about 1/16 inch" in on the corners of the larger square. She moved the squares in and I moved the stitching in. If you haven't found a fool proof method, try mine "Sara's Posh Geese" (wh is just a made up name for "when at first [or ever] you don't succeed, try something else!). I lay out my pieces to fit and where there are supposed to be seams, I use my decorative stitches over the edges and make fancy wings.😁 I hope, if this vid didn't give you perfect geese, that you could use the info I gave you. Either way I hope you finally have your beautiful geese. Happy sewing!🙋

Thank you for your video; the instructions are very clear. However, I’m still trying to figure out why you place the small squares 1/16” in from the large square? What is the purpose of this?
@DebTuckersStudio180Design
@DebTuckersStudio180Design 3 жыл бұрын
Because of how we oversized the starting squares the nudge allows for there to be extra along the top and side edges for trimming. With out the nudge you will not have enough fabric for trimming when you are done sewing.

Does it make any difference with respect to which direction the seams go? If I understand your process, you will make 4 geese in total. Two of the wing seams lay to the left, two to the right. I originally learned that all your seams should go the same direction (which of course means you are making the geese one at a time). Linda from Maine
@DebTuckersStudio180Design
@DebTuckersStudio180Design 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Linda, It actually doesn't matter at all how your seams are pressed when making the Fast Flying Geese. I just tend to press them toward the smaller triangles out of habit, but you could press them both the same direction, both toward the large triangle, or open.Because you are positioning lines over the sewn seams and not a "ridge" or "groove" the choice is totally up to you! Good luck with all your Flying Geese projects 💜

Do you have to buy more fabric to do this method
@DebTuckersStudio180Design
@DebTuckersStudio180Design 3 жыл бұрын
If you are starting with the Rectangle and Square method then no you do not. If the pattern originally uses the fast flying geese method with no oversizing you might need an extra 1/8 yard, it all depends on if the pattern designer builds in a little extra yardage as you will need maybe an extra 1" but that is really it. Usually you don't need to purchase extra.

What do you do if you need a 2 1/2X 4 1/2 finished?
@DebTuckersStudio180Design
@DebTuckersStudio180Design 2 жыл бұрын
I would check to see what the term finished means in the pattern. If I was to guess they actually want a 2"x4" finished unit on our tool. The use of the word finished size is not always consistent. I suggest making a test unit and then measuring the unit and then on our chart look at the Cut Size column to find a size that corresponds to what you are measuring and I bet it will be a cut size of 2 1/2"x 4 1/2" on our chart. You can email us at customer service if you still have questions about this.
