As a dark skinned woman, I ran in here like Usain Bolt! I’ve noticed that some people are bothered by me because my color doesn’t bother me and my tight coils don’t bother me. My brown skin suits my facial features, hair texture, shape, ALL of it. I see plenty of light skinned folks out here struggling, just like other folks. Their lighter skin isn’t making life easier for them or opening any doors that don’t open for me, so why would I covet what they have? People can’t project their insecurities on me or humble me. Edit: the eyeshadow looks great!!!

Nasty work! And it can even be said that this applies in many other areas in life in general. Someone could be mediocre and “mid” but because they’re light or the “acceptable” sort of black, they get pushed to the front and get opportunities that they don’t deserve over someone who may be darker, and has the FULL qualifications and then some, all the while the darker person will be shut down, ridiculed, and made to second guess their intelligence, talents, and image, while that lighter person is being gassed up to become delusional about their actual ability

She fat though… you don’t care that she’s fat?!” And he kept saying nah idc she sounds cute so she hands me the phone and we chat for all of one minute before she snatched the phone back mad as hell. I added him on FB. We became close friends and once we met he said I was prettier in person. 🤷🏽‍♀️😂 this “friend” punched me in the jaw for that but i ate that and still kept seeing the guy lmao. i do agree the knee jerk reaction to claim that a dark skinned person is jealous is like a pocket knife. its an easy out. I also think there's no woman who could get away with "i hate the way that you walk, i hate the way that you talk ... etc " let alone repeating it. even with megan the stallion there were people still hanging on to nicki laughing that big foot was a hit and she's the ultimate troll. but i also feel that's reason enough that men need to step up and be better listeners because we can't defend ourselves alone especially online. black women are always the loudest and advocating for ourselves and dark skinned woman deserve better narratives besides being jealous. we have so much more to offer the world.

I don’t think colorists realize, or care about, how lethal the “dark skin women are jealous” narrative is to the minds of Black youth. The immense hatred that dark skin children face causes them to feel that way about themselves and develop a horrific relationship with not just their skin but Blackness as a whole. An example of this is the movie Precious. Precious develops internalized antiBlackness towards dark skin people because she experienced colorism by pretty much everyone around her. She even imagines herself to be a blonde, blue eyed white woman when she looks in the mirror. (TW: mention of self harm) Between to constant colorist language used to describe dark skin people and the promotion of skin bleaching, Black children are extremely prone to self harm and unhealthy mentalities about themselves and their Blackness. Colorism is so wicked and the fact that it’s so normalized and even encouraged makes my heart break.

your eye makeup made me think of little hummingbirds ❤ and thank you for this topic, as a dark south asian women I always say we owe black women so much for starting these conversations, because for us embracing dark skin and curly hair is waaaaaaay too recent and more of us were only influenced to start unlearning colorism and texturism through black women, not other desi people. thankfully that's starting to change! also THANK YOU for bringing up that double standard re kendrick's lyrics - I agree that men have more freedom to make remarks like that because their version of proximity to whiteness seems less focused on outer appearance and more about success/opportunities. Since everyone's conditioned to believe that competition between women is solely about attention from men - we're not allowed to comment on who is "closer to the culture," or who's "selling out" to gain accolades, those conversations simply aren't meant for us - the narrative defaults to being about jealousy. It's getting REALLY old lmfao

And I just cannot understand, if they’re so beautiful and confident, why do they keep constantly coming after us. It’s because we know we are beautiful inside, even without the approval of whiteness. And when you have that type of dignity and pride, no one can take that away from you. They are threatened that our ancestors lift us up, and we don’t need the approval of anyone else, in order to have pride and who we are, our hair texture, and our beautiful deep Melanated skin tone. I pray that the young girls understand, these so-called baddies , our just male focused. I had to look up this Flo woman, and hearing a black person attack another with such hatred-using “Black” as an insult-was absolutely disgusting. What made it worse was learning that Flo has deeper-skinned sons yet spewed such vitriol over skin tone. Mayowa, keep having these conversations and igniting these discussions-they matter. I’ve learned so much from your insight over the years and have come to truly appreciate the importance of these topics. Also, your eyeshadow was stunning-the shades complimented you beautifully! The funniest thing about the dynamic is that the locus of control is actually DSW. It’s artifice. The sliding scale of how privileged they (and all other women “above” them) are is solely determined on our relative position. We are the determining factor. If we don’t feel, act or get treated as the least preferred in any dynamic, the tantrum is immediate. Whether it’s the boy they like dating or even alluding to finding you attractive, if you’re the crowd fave/life of the party, if you’re smarter, if you earn higher, if you have an outfit that people compliment…you don’t even have to outdo them, just bet on the slightest hint that you could be equal or even distract the audience from them for a second…that’s when you see real envy.

I’m considered the darkest person among fellow black classmates/coursemate. Growing up i was used as examples by teachers and laughed at ( i can’t even remember the conversation now). I remember always being called out wherever i go as blacki (something they call darker shades in Nigeria) and it never felt like a compliment the look in their eyes felt mocking and people always have to point out how much darker i am in a conversation even if it didn’t call for it at all. A year ago a lecturer was finding the darkest person in our class (not for academic reason even) and my heart seized when ppl turn in my direction I thought this would be like secondary school all over again being laughed at like being darker is funny. Only for them to point a guy behind me. My heart was beating hard as he was told to stand and of course chuckled at and i was scared they would still call me to stand as I’m pretty sure I’m his shade. For the first time someone else was in my place and I didn’t know how to feel except sad for the guy. It havent happened again so far . But yeah being darker even among fellow dark skin people suck. Why just why can’t you not exclude me when we’re having a conversation by saying I’m very black, (why am i so dark, looking at me like am an alien )like i don’t have almost 2 decades of that knowledge. Sorry this message was very long but i felt it also needed to be said that even your fellow dark skinned people can discriminate for being a shade darker. ( not that the creator was saying this). Up till now i hardly found influencers my shade to inspire me but i love my skin really and wanna make it healthy looking and smooth.

DSW have absolutely ZERO reasons to be jealous of a lighter skinned person.

There is nothing wrong in being delusional and thinking that you deserve A. B and C. because you are closer to whiteness, just don't get angry when you see deeper skin women getting the A. B. and C. things as well. This is something I see often, anger when supposed "underserving" people get nice things

I literally made a video addressing the colorism surrounding the thirst over Aaron Pierre, and you wouldn’t believe how many gaslighting comments I got from people trying to tell me that I’m secretly jealous, that I’m hating on him, that a light skin guy must’ve hurt my feelings... simply because like you said, I simply pointed out the online discourse surrounding him. It just was absolutely breathtaking how many people could not even hold space for the possibility that they were engaging in colorism

I'm 47 & when I was 16, my mom joined a local African studies group. She took us with her to their meetings & we learned the facts about melanin, black history, and the ancient African excellence of our Ancestors. Since then, I have been anti-colorism. Colorism & racism are 2 evils that white people made up to excuse their immoral disrespect, exploitation, and abusive violence towards ✋🏿✋🏾✋🏽humans. The most beautiful women on 🌍 that I have ever seen are ✋🏿✋🏾black women. Some ✋🏽✋🏼black women are ignorant and secretly hate being black so they reject their own race & say idiotic 🐂💩 about other black women. I ignore the opinions of non-black women when they have the audacity to say anything about us black women. When we as a race learn to LOVE ourselves, the stupid, divisive colorism in our community will end. I taught my daughter (she's 16) to love herself since she was a baby. She confidently loves her skin color and her natural hair 🥰 Please always continue speaking out against colorism, racism, featurism, and texturism. Our community needs to hear those messages!

Jealousy is definitely not the word to use. Dark sun women with confidence are a threat, because those who are lighter have been told and shown all their life that they are better. I think the words“ envy” and “ confusion” might be better to use. For example. Let’s be honest. Those in close proximity to whiteness get the bigger, better deals in life. It’s human to want those perks too. I am thankful most dark skinned women are not affected by this, but some are. Secondly, light skinned women get confused when dark skinned women with beauty and confidence- don’t wish to be light. Light and bright are not the only colors in the world. Thank you for this video, as always Mayowa!

Thank you for putting it so well in just a few seconds. I feel like anytime I notice pride in proximity to whiteness, that's my cue to exit the relationship. It somehow always ends up with me getting hurt when my feelings and experiences get ignored or the person actively throwing me under the bus at some point because I'm an expendable dark skinned black woman. I hate that it gives me so much pause in who I can trust and build relationships and community with, but anyone with that mindset is not going to see my inherent value anyway, or if they do they want to stifle it because it makes them uncomfortable when I don't want to dim my shine.
