Biggest leverage minimum input maximum output things to increase your health: 1. Sleep. More of it and higher quality. 2. Exercise. Worst 15 minute everyday routine beats almost everything other than sleep in health benefits. 3. Food. More protein. More and diverse set of fiber, greens and veggies. Half a serving of oats with something to kill the phytic acid(milk or lemon) will improve your diet by leaps and bounds. Low sugar yoghurt too. Both super easy additions. 4. Water. Just drink a tiny bit more every hour. Lal of these are cheap, don't take up more than 30 minutes and will improve your life by leaps and bounds.

37:21 100% agree with this. After 8 years of active duty military service, I'm physically beat up. But learning the causal, physiological reasons why things are happening within my body makes them more tolerable. I'm not in less pain, so to speak, but I'm dealing with it better and am more able to ignore it, where applicable.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🤔 *Holding in a fart can lead to a percentage of the fart diffusing into the bloodstream, eventually reaching the lungs, causing you to breathe it out.* 02:27 🍔 *Burping can result from air swallowing, carbonated drinks, microbial gas production, and acid reflux. Certain hormones like CCK (cholecystokinin) play a role in delaying gastric emptying.* 05:20 🍽️ *Digestion is a complex process involving multiple organs, not just the stomach. The small intestine, gallbladder, pancreas, and liver all contribute to the digestion process.* 06:43 🤯 *The rise in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may be influenced by factors such as diet, sedentary lifestyle, stress, and lack of sleep, impacting the microbiome.* 07:34 💊 *Over-the-counter probiotics may not be as effective due to low concentrations and competition with existing gut bacteria. Probiotic-rich foods like kefir, kombucha, and yogurt can be more beneficial.* 16:28 🧠 *Serotonin produced in the gut doesn't directly influence mood, but the gut microbiome can release neurotransmitters that affect mood via the gut-brain axis.* 17:40 ⌛ *Psychobiotics, which may influence mood through the microbiome, could be a future development, but it might be around 10-15 years away for consumer use.* 14:10 🕰️ *The most intense surgeries, like extensive bowel surgery, can take several hours due to factors such as scar tissue (adhesions), making them physically and mentally demanding.* 15:47 🤒 *The connection between gut serotonin and mood is nuanced; while serotonin in the gut doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier, the gut microbiome can indirectly influence mood through neurochemical signals.* 18:53 🎤 *In challenging situations, such as managing an event with norovirus and technical issues, quick thinking and resourcefulness are essential, even in unpleasant health conditions.* 20:28 🧠 *Gut-mood connection: Gut microbiota transplant studies show a link between a depressed microbiome and depressive symptoms, highlighting the strong connection between gut health and mood.* 22:13 💩 *Poop transplants: Fecal microbiota transplants (FMT) are used medically for conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. The speaker mentions a friend who is a highly paid poop donor.* 23:38 ⏰ *Individual sleep needs: The idea of an 8-hour sleep for everyone is a fallacy; individual DNA directs how much sleep one needs, typically ranging between 6.5 to 8.5 hours.* 28:11 😴 *Napping protocol: Optimal nap duration is 90 minutes for memory consolidation and refreshment. Sleep inertia may occur if the nap is too short or too deep.* 29:05 ☕ *Caffeine timing: The 321 rule for better sleep recommends avoiding caffeine 3 hours before bed. Caffeine's half-life is around 8 hours, affecting sleep if consumed close to bedtime.* 31:32 🌕 *Moon phases and sleep: While no scientific evidence directly links moon phases to sleep quality, the speaker acknowledges potential effects, especially if external light sources impact sleep.* 34:16 👂 *Hearing protection: Long-term exposure to loud music or environments can damage hair cells in the ear, leading to hearing impairment. Custom-molded earplugs with filters are recommended for protection.* 35:52 👃 *Nose plucking risks: Plucking nose hairs can lead to microabrasions, increasing the risk of infections. The "danger triangle" in the face has a close association with the veins draining to the brain.* 37:30 🧘 *Pain perception: Understanding the physiological reasons behind pain can increase pain threshold and lower pain perception. Mental strategies, like looking away during injections, can also affect pain perception.* 38:50 🩹 *Perception of pain can be influenced by psychological factors; a case highlighted where a man believed a nail pierced his foot, but it was stopped by the boot, showing the placebo and nocebo effect in pain perception.* 40:00 🧊 *Cold water exposure can be more enjoyable if approached with a sense of aggression rather than relaxation; counting down from 180 can help endure a cold tub for 3 minutes.* 41:22 🩸 *NAD drip, while uncomfortable, is a unique category of pain with a distinct perception; understanding the pain's purpose for improvement can change the experience.* 43:01 👀 *Prolonged screen time contributes to myopia epidemic; the 20-20-20 rule, taking a break every 20 minutes, can help offset eye strain and maintain eye health.* 44:35 🚶 *Optic flow, defocusing eyes, and looking at a broader view can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.* 48:29 🧠 *Slowing cognitive decline involves establishing healthy habits early: prioritizing good sleep, regular exercise, a balanced diet, social connections, and reducing stress.* 52:11 🍽️ *Keystone decisions like shared meals positively impact health; focusing on relationships and communal eating can lead to downstream benefits for digestion and overall well-being.* 55:06 ⚖️ *Stress has physiological impacts on various organ systems; chronic stress can exacerbate skin conditions, disrupt the gut, and suppress the immune system, affecting overall health.* 58:44 🏋️ *Extreme stress instances, like lifting a car, can trigger a powerful stress response; illustrated by Eddie Hall's experience, causing immediate physiological reactions.* 59:54 🥦 *Hormesis analogy: Stress, like antinutrients in vegetables, can be beneficial in small doses; stress allows the body to respond, adapt, and improve over time.* 01:00:20 🌌 *Awe plays a role in well-being, offsetting neurodegeneration and brain atrophy; experiencing new things, witnessing wonders, and being inspired contribute positively to emotions and health.* 01:01:29 🌠 *Awe as a positive emotion; it doesn't require grand experiences but can be found in simple moments, like looking at the night sky, contributing to well-being and a meditative experience.* Made with HARPA AI

@lauradaranas1617 Жыл бұрын
Thank you. A.I. also got the 321 wrong. It's no food 3 hours before bed, no drinks 2 hours before and no screens 1 hour prior. As for caffeine, Dr. Rajan said it could take up to 10 hours to exit your system, so really, if you're going to bed at 10pm you should have no caffeine (including sodas and black tea I suppose) after noon.

Full Moon (from Generative AI): When the sun, moon, and Earth are aligned during a full moon, the solar tide adds to the lunar tide. This creates spring tides, which are extra-high high tides and very low low tides. Maybe full moon effects on sleep and mood are due more to the influence of gravity on the liquids inside of our bodies and less due to the influence of the moon's reflected light.

I would go a little against the sleep stuff. On average, there's even a measurable impact on cognitive ability on people who just slept 7 hours; under 6 hours memory performance becomes really shitty, akin to being drunk. You can get by on 7 hours if you're perfectly healthy, eat few meat, exercise regularly but lightly, have little to no stress. 6.5 is already not manageable for almost all people without negative impact on cognitive ability. On the other hand, sleeping for 9 hours can be required in hard times, f.e. women on the energy-expensive time on their period or men who work out very long can require that time. The important thing to keep in mind here that the additional hours don't do anything if not needed, meaning if you sleep 9 hours without waking up after 7-8 in the first place.

Re: IBS and other chronic conditions, controversially - and I'm sure many people who also don't know any better will jump at this.. but childhood vaccinations may have a role to play. Worth looking at the simpsonwood meeting the CDC held (on rumble because youtube censors) and the recently released Vax-Unvax book. Interesting yet unfortunate reading that gives info from numerous peer reviewed studies. Quite staggering reading - especially given both my kids had all theirs in the last 5 years.
@yeahyeahblah Жыл бұрын
You're talking about the Simpsonwood CDC conference from the year 2000 where Robert Kennedy tried to make out it was a conspiracy on the safety of vaccines. Robert Kennedy's article tried to link autism with a vaccine containing "thimerosal". This article was debunked with the publisher retracting the article because of numerous factual errors including overstating the amount of ethylmercury in vaccines, wrongly claiming that a researcher held a patent on one of the discussed vaccines, and erroneously claiming that the rotavirus vaccine contained thimerosal. The CDC distributed all the data discussed at the conference as confirmed by a U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions in 2007 and it was confirmed there was no cover up. So I would stop with the misinformation around childhood vaccinations.

It's an interesting point you're raising. Statistically, most doctors are not healthy. It is an extremely stressful job (at least in the UK) and they often give themselves up for the patients. Ending up not sleeping enough eating convenience and smoking.
@ZyroZoro Жыл бұрын
That is illogical. That is an ad hominem, specifically an example of the poisoning the well fallacy. Characteristics of a person don't determine whether what they say is true or not. If a homeless man tells you that you should get a job, you should do what he says. Him not practicing what he preaches is completely irrelevant. Arguments should be evaluated based on their merits, not the quality of the person giving them. Having said that, you don't know why this doctor is overweight. He could have a medical condition, he could have poor genetics and it's difficult to keep off weight, or maybe he simply values food more than his health and is willing to make that sacrifice. It doesn't matter what the reason is, all that matters is the merit of his words.

This doctor by his job description is a general surgeon. I’m the us, these particular people do not have expertise in any of these topics he is talking about. No doubt he has read some papers and books and uses some of his basic medical school studies to interpret the data but being a doctor does not make you an expert in these vast topics. They definitely do not do colonoscopies, at least they don’t in the us. Lots of people with credentials do this and it’s dry confusing for the public.

I'm only 15 minutes into this video & already I'm finding it difficult to trust this guy. As a surgical theatre team member of more than 20 years, & having been part of almost every single surgical procedure available, I'm finding dramatic overestimation of the difficulties forced upon the surgeons when doing a prolonged surgical procedure. It's not like they are not able to go to the bathroom or even stop for a meal break. They are definitely able to 'unscrub' to take a break. I have seen this countless times. The patient on the operating table can be kept in a state of anaesthesia with the surgical field covered to maintain sterility for the period required. This happens regularly in the longest surgical procedures such as separating siamese twins, multiple organ cancer removals (otherwise known as a Whipples procedure) or any complex neurosurgical tumor removals. I'm yet to see the rest of the episode as I stopped to communicate the obvious exaggerated aspect that I have seen, but I think that I might have to revisit this one at a later date? The point of this comment is to draw attention to the fact that this Dr is not necessarily the most transparent insight into the world of surgery that you are going to find by any stretch of the imagination!

lots of interviews with professionals about gut health, general health, very interesting podcast but unfortunately disappointed by your ingredients list in your neutonic drink you co own, you mentioned it's a nootropic drink which is not just a drink but can increase performance, that's great and all but you've added chemicals to this drink, sucralose and acesulfame K- unnatural sweeteners, a lot of people have adverse effects when consuming products with unnatural sweeteners, which include, problems with sleep, sleep paralysis, headaches, stomach issues, bloating, gas, negative effect on your microbiome (something you're interested in and talk a lot about) which is why im very confused about your decision to include them- might have something to do with your co owner (James) People tend to listen to their bodies, and although there isn't conclusive scientific studies that claim unnatural sweeteners are bad for adult humans, people are aware these are chemicals that are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar that have been diluted and paired together using a chemical process to enhance flavour, i guess you should of practised what you preach and actually released a drink that's actually healthy for people.
