It is so damn bold to say that Taylor swift won the Grammy because she worked hard on it. On its own, it’s like, okay, no shit she worked hard on it, but when you say that, you inherently imply that no other artist is actually trying to win awards… Like, damn, I can’t believe not a single other artist has ever worked hard on music It’s like. As a huge swiftie, I wholeheartedly agree with you. 1989 is a fun pop record, but it is perhaps her weakest in terms of lyrics and messgae. TPAB is a masterwork. It's like comparing apples and oranges these two albums are nowhere near each other. This isn't to say that they aren't both good, they are just different types of good. Where 1989 is like cotton candy (fun, airy, and sweet) TPAB is like rich tiramisu (layered, complex, and steeped in richness).

Exactly!!! I also think 1989 is such a weird hill to die on when it comes to Taylor Swift's music. Because out of all of her work, I would say it is just not the best. It has some fun songs on it, but even Red has so much more complexity in lyrics and audio imho. To try to pit 1989 against TPAB is more like trying to compare a bad flavor of cotton candy against tiramisu. Like it is still sweet, and some people probably love it, but typically no one is going to choose that over tiramisu.

Idk her life but it’s sussy. She turns everything into a song which is her thing and creative choice but but I don’t see her addressing that in a song. TPAB is absolutely a fantastic work to analyze in conjunction with Invisible Man. I wish that more English teachers would bring rap into the classroom, especially because I think rap is a great way to engage students when it comes to talking about verse and poetry (and because some of the best poets writing in the modern day are rappers, even if they wouldn't necessarily identify as such). i think that the swifties really have a problem with taking any criticism to taylor swift’s identity from a marginalized perspective because they consider it to be a personal attack. after the whole “antihero” controversy happened and fat people were like “i don’t like how this seems to equate being fat with being morally bad or repulsive” and the response from the fan base was like “well it is bad” it really opened my eyes to the way they view her as kinda both like this real person that they can really support because she’s down to earth, but somehow also this infallible, out-selling, out-performing God-like figure, and that they will punch down on anyone who tries to speak up about concerns with her.

And besides what Ro said in the video about the racial component of dragging TPAB under the notion that Swift and 1989 are just so much better because..."it's pop and reminds me of the 80's," it gives off big "The MCU is the height of cinema and every film outside of the studio system is quaking at its accomplishments" energy. Like, if you prefer studio pop that's hella mainstream on the radio, that's your preference, but you can't write off an layered album musing on decades of racism in America as "so bad compared to Taylor" when the height of Taylor's deep commentary in her music is "Don't be mad or concerned, gays, everyone threatening you are all dirty rednecks" or "I'd be super successful and popular if I was a man" (which she already is, with far less contention than many of her black women contemporaries). Tl;dr: Enjoying pop by a popular musician like Taylor is perfectly fine, but acting like it is 100% superior to the work of a black artist like Kendrick who put so much of themselves and thought into their music when Taylor largely coasts of the idea that her music is good and meaningful in a feminist lens as is, even with her blindspots as a rich white woman, is goofy.

@@b.parker1740 The "if I was a man" song drives me nuts bc like, obviously misogyny exists and can certainly have an impact on women's careers, and certainly did have an impact on Taylor Swift's career (ex. when people made a huge deal about her writing songs about love and breakups as if that's not like 80% of pop music). But it just feels so inauthentic coming from arguably one of the most famous and successful people of her generation (and not to mention how it doesn't account for other factors of discrimination like race at all). If she'd wrote the same song in her first or second album I'd have no real problem with it, the song itself is fine, it's just who it's coming from (megastar Taylor Swift) and when she released it (aka at the height of her fame) that makes me kind of hate it lol. Imo TS has a tendency to paint herself as a victim in her songs while also being incredibly wealthy and powerful which rubs me the wrong way

@albummutation2278
@albummutation2278 Жыл бұрын
I sincerely feel that the three (modern) genres that are continuously underrated and overlooked are rap, punk (including post-punk, which means gothic stuff too), and metal. They're all absolutely insanely large genres, with deep histories, intricacies, and ties to political discourse and use for giving voices to minorities, and are shot down because of preconceived (and often racist) notions that these genres require less skill than others, or have less value intrinsically because of their sonic or lyrical characteristics. All music is important, especially these genres (even for me personally, as a ciswhite). They've also influenced so many things in mainstream culture that are ignored. It's one thing to acknowledge that you aren't the target audience, or that you just simply don't like that type of music, but to assess it's worth when you don't understand the history, skill, and influences of whatever genre (even white-dominated genres, honestly) is extremely ignorant and makes an entire group of people, even the fans, feel like they're not worth it or good enough. It's consistently why these genres have always been on the backburner of pop culture historically, or even directly demonized like metal, punk, and rap were (and still are). Rap reaching mainstream is entirely because of albums like TPAB and even less "lyrically good" albums like Culture II, because it is such a masterful work that even people who don't like the genre are forced to accept its quality. But swifties and kpop stans and similar are so clouded and damn near brainwashed at times by a hyperconsumerist mindset that ties sales and views to quality, and I feel like many of them don't even truly digest the music they listen to. They listen to bolster the numbers, because it's what they're "supposed" to do, it's how they can make sure they're listening to "quality" music. And it's also like they tie the value of themselves to the numbers of the music they listen to, and then use that to assess the worth of others. These types of people are literally incapable of seeing the bigger picture with music, they cannot assess music with a historical lens, or any true qualitative lens, because to them, music isn't that meta. The only substance they can extrapolate is how popular it is, and if it's not popular, it's not worth it. That's why awards mean so much to them as well, if an artist isn't winning awards, they're not a good artist. They're incapable of understanding the politics of the grammys, and how rigged of a game it is, or they're willfully ignorant to it.

@@albummutation2278 I mostly agree with you but want to push back on a few things. As a brown person, punk and metal scenes can are incredibly hostile to anyone who isn't white. At this point, a lot of metal and punk are also commodified in the same way that other forms of music are, and that reflects in a degradation of the ethos of the music. You could make the argument that "true" punks and metalheads wouldn't be that way, but as most brown and black people can attest to, racism and bigotry come from places you wouldn't expect. Another thing I want to say is that initially, when the kpop community internationally was pretty small, it was considered alternative. May people with punk leanings also got really into kpop. I experienced this as a former stan,. That being said, the industry itself is very capitalistic and certain parts of artistry and meaning get lost bc of it. That's what ended up pushing me away from kpop-- the illusion popped and I couldn't take the same kind of comfort in it that I used to after seeing the artifice idols had to maintain to keep their success. A third thing is that music history is not easy to access unless you've been raised in it. I kind of bristle when white people get haughty over music bc they don't realize that having someone expose you to and teach you music history is a blessing. For many reasons, including being first gen, that information is not something that was ever passed down to me. My family didn't really have capacity to reflect on or discuss music due to the numerous other things occupying my elders' time. As someone who has learned everything I know about music history through research and in isolation (as opposed to in community) it's really hard to understand the complexities of music history in isolation. Developing my lens required cobbling together many different pieces of information together to try to make sense of music history in America. (if you have sources you'd recommend to learn more, I'd appreciate them) Additionally, the domination of American music/cultural products on a global scale means that many people who encounter American music or art don't have an understanding of the history behind the art they are consuming. Even more so considering the history of music in this country is functionally Black history, which is undertaught and otherwise obscured in a deeply racist society. It takes digging to remove the layers of separation capitalism creates between cultural products and the cultures they come from. I don't agree with the idea that some people are incapable of breaking out of hyperconsumerist views on art. Because those views are taught and enforced by larger systems. Many people haven't been exposed to other forms of music, or maybe don't have the time or energy due to the demands of their back-breaking jobs to spend a lot of time reflecting on art or music. That doesn't seem to be the case with the Tiktok person, but for many others it is. Capitalism divorces people from their humanity, and that includes their ability to experience art in a meaningful way. Framing these stances as personal failings really deflects from the reality that systems of power including racism and capitalism are responsible for the atrocious media literacy we see here.

I was originally apprehensive to watch this video bc usually when non Black creators speak on Black issues, they do so in a way that won’t piss off or call out any of their non Black audience and without getting into too much nuance. I was expecting a Kurtis Conner style of mentioning my community in this video and I was very pleasantly surprised to see how in depth you went with your criticisms and really broke down exactly what was so racist about the Swiftie video. So many “ex rap” fans never took the time to actually engage in the art form and just consumed our culture at a break neck pace bc it was trendy to do, later discarding it like the temporary toy they used it for. Thank you for speaking on this and I hope you continue to include us in your commentary.

As someone who would consider themselves a swiftie, award shows have always been and will always be political. Wins are almost never about the quality of the piece. It’s a collection of popularity, narrative, and voters biases. A good way to explain it in Swiftie terms is folklore vs evermore. While folklore won album of the year and evermore didn’t, it’s not necessarily because folklore is better than evermore. The politics of the awards meant that one artist, especially one that’s won so many times, was never going to win album of the year two times in a row. She probably knows this too, since she didn’t even turn up for the ceremony. Evermore’s loss doesn’t make the winners album undeserving and folklores win doesn’t make any of the albums lower quality. Even folklores win was political because it suited her comeback narrative and it was a perfect album for early covid.

I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan, but I will be the first to admit she is not everything that Swifties claim that she is when it comes to creating music. She makes hits and many of her lyrics are beautiful and iconic, but she is not this ginormous influential poet of our time like many people try to argue. I will always argue that others like Mitski are miles ahead. And saying 1989 is her best album when Speak Now exists? Bold.

i'm just so tired of stan culture in general. it seems like everywhere you turn, no matter what circles you're in, the majority of people will be 100% obsessed with whatever that thing is to the point where it's their entire personality and even the slightest criticism will be taken as a personal offense. they always have to put down the 'competitors' too. it sucks cause i love talking about my interests, no matter how mainstream or obscure, but i've never really felt comfortable in any fanbase due to this. and on the opposite side, it's annoying seeing things i dislike or find problematic be praised by so many people who won't even stop to think about consuming their media critically

Even compared to Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia and Miley’s Plastic Hearts, the only thing 80s about 1989 (one of my favorites from her) is the synthesizer. No because if there’s one thing that Taylor Swift fans have taught me, it’s that they’re quite possibly the most classist and racist fandom in terms of pushing the “she’s women so oppressed” against any criticism. It’s the same way kpop stans use the “but Korean” to push back against any racism or classism accusations. I remember the Jubilee video where they accused the Asian swiftie of being a fake fan because she said she was disappointed Taylor Swift didn’t disavow the racist stans calling her an Aryan princess. I like her music. I love the 1989 album, but it’s an objective fact that her father being a stockbroker for Meryl and Lynch (one of the most well known) really helped her career arch. Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer, but black art has a history of being disrespected by the Recording Academy. In middle schools I was always a stan of artists, but of all fandoms hers felt the most alien space as a POC in the early to mid 2010s. Even now, I see more South Asian influencers who are “swifties”, but they’re usually the removed from the culture, grew up middle class types. Also, why are people past the age of middle school still “stanning” anyone.
@oldchannel611

It's very funny to see a stan assume that any fan of an artist is just as obsessive and devoted as them. They assume that objectivity and deeper analysis is impossible if someone is arguing that something they like is worse than something else. They assume that the favoritism is equal on both sides. The whole "make better music" thing is very indicative of that.

That and acting like rap has no creative merit when freestyling and bouncing off of each other lyrically is such a common practice in the genre, so it gets pretty obvious it's less about what's being said and more about who's saying it and why more AA have gone against non black people having opinions on rap and hip hop if they can't keep their biases at the door.

as a massive swiftie (who got sent the original tiktok by many non-swiftie friends lmao) i LOVE 1989, it's not "objectively" her best album but it's one of my personal favourites as it got me through a very difficult time in my life. i take issue with the idea that music or any art form for that matter that doesn't explore "deep" themes is ultimately not as good as or more deserving of awards than music/art that does. apart from that, i completely agree with all the criticism of the orignal tiktok. I'm a big pop fan so obviously I like taylor's album more but that's my personal taste, I'm not gonna go around saying that it's better than a specific rap album or better than a rock album or a fucking classical music album or whatever tf because I'm not a rap fan. I'm not a rock fan. I'm not a classical music fan. Like literally stop trying to be a judge of all music if you have a limited point of view. but even if you believe that 1989 was better, you cannot deny that taylor swift's whiteness played a role in win. like you literally cannot deny it. it really frustrates me when people believe that privilege and working hard are mutually exclusive. is 1989 an amazing pop album? yes. did taylor swift work extremely hard on the album? yes. did her conventional attractiveness and whiteness help propel the album to popularity and critical acclaim? also yes. just because she worked hard doesn't mean that she also wasn't impacted from factors outside of her control that she benefited from (ie. being cis, white, conventionally attractive etc.) and swifties need to stop pretending that she wasn't ://

But her music doesn’t cross populations the way Kendrick’s does. She writes about her own experiences, and she’s very good at that! @@JosieFawkes Thank you so much for the offer! I've only listened to a few Kendrick songs, actually, I think - I tend to find one song I like and then listen to it on repeat. So the ones I know are 'I LOVE MYSELF' and 'Swimming Pools.' I'm tempted to say I like him for his lyrics because lyrics ARE generally very important to me, and I know Kendrick's are popular with critics - but I'm not totally sure about that because I feel like I've definitely listened to a few rap songs where I looked at the lyrics and was like "ah yes, this is High Art" and then never listened to it again. So I think the background music and the choruses is pretty key? Because whenever I hear Nicki Minaj as a featured rapper, I enjoy listening to her a lot, but when I go to look up more of her music, I cannot stand the sugary-sweet beats. I'm listening to 'I love Myself' again and yeah, I do think the way the background track sort of weaves around itself and layers is a big part of what I like. But my favorite part of the song is the bit where he goes "I went to war last night/With an automatic weapon, don't nobody call a medic/I'm a do it 'til I get it right." I think about those lines a lot! I also like "Show Goes On" by Lupe Fiasco, "All of the Lights" by Kanye West (Unfortunate about his politics 😬), and "Thrift Store" by Macklemore. (I realize that last one kinda doesn't fit but I sure do spend a lot of time at the thrift store.) And I hate Eminem, although I'm not sure if that's an issue with his sound or just his general persona.

I thought of a few more I hadn't listened to in awhile, I also like "Hate it or Love it" by The Game, "Day n Nite" and "Man in the Moon" by Kid Cudi, and that song "What's Up Danger" from the Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack.

@isaacleguin2171 So I'm personally curious because all of the songs you've mentioned liking by Kendrick, Kid Cudi and the other ones listed are their singles. Those are supposed to be more or less made for radio play so without further listens it might be a bit harder to track down how to get you started.

About rap, I think the "rap as a phase" thing might be connected to the "edgy phase" in teenagers and how boys (white ones especially) use rap to express and affirm their masculinity - especially the "gangsta" or "bitches and money" type of song, and how even femme people kind of are expected to be cool with that, even though that genre of rap songs is kind of hostile to us. A lot of white rap fandom as I have tangentally experienced it gives off very Kendall Roy vibes. You know - appropriative of the hypermasculinity of the rap artists' gangsta or pimp persona, vicariously enjoying the "subversive" elements, the sexuality and violence and "fuck the police", while also being kind of disrespectful and disinterested in racial issues. Maybe that is a bit of a reductive view of the white boy rap fans though - Since I tend to shun them like the plague, it's not based on very many data points. That kind type of rap also kind of makes me uncomfortable because I start to wonder - is this intentionally playing into stereotypes about black men and women for the purpose of appealing to a white gaze, or kind of fitting into it because of market forces and stuff? Is it bad that it feels stereotypical and exploitative to me when maybe it's authentic to the artist? I do know there is a lot more rap than that which appeals to little white boys though, and I definitely want to expand my horizons there beyond just stumbling over single tracks or artists who use rap in a way I enjoy. I'm way more of a beautiful/cool soundscapes person over a lyric focused person though, which is kind of the opposite of what a lot of rap is (or has been) so exploring rap music is one of those things which gets pushed into the future for me, just because I'm lazy and don't know where to begin

The other thing about the "not everyone likes rap" is the implication that everyone must like or be able to relate to taylor swift, and further that she's relatable by virtue of being a "typical" cishet white all-american woman, whose experiences must naturally be more universal than those of a Black man. I'm a white afab person who has known of taylor swift since literally Tim McGraw hit country radio in 2006 when I was in kindergarten, and was a huge fan of hers up until I hit middle school and started to realize I was nothing like her and never could be, because I'm not the right class or the right sexuality or even the "right type" of white person (I'm Jewish, meanwhile neo-n@zis are out there calling ms swift their aryan princess with their whole chest). I relate to maybe 3 songs in her entire discography. And that doesn't take away from her artistry or success, I think it's numbingly stupid and anti-intellectual to assume art has value only because you relate to it, but it truly boils my blood when certain swifties say shit like that and then act like it's not blatantly racist, along with a complete misunderstanding of diverse personhood in general. If you can relate to taylor that says a lot more about you than it does about anyone else. And again that's not a bad thing, unless you use it to be this guy, and then you're fucking awful sorry

If rap is so awful & pop is so great, why does nearly every hit pop single for the past 10 years have a rap feature? If pop stars are superior, wouldn’t they be able to stand on their own?

taylor has definitely written about far more topics than just heartbreak or relationships though. I don't think she has made anything as close to the masterpiece of tpab, but it's reductive to claim that she only writes about relationships.

This "if your favorites don't make awards it means they don't make good music" thing is unreal like... have you really NEVER liked an album that wasn't popular? I guess that sounds kind of pretentious, but I can't imagine not having any "people may not know them but they're the world to me :)" music.

i think this is linked to the pressure to have a "good" taste in music. if people are told that listening to bad music is cringe then they will try and claim that music that is shallow and fun and pop is also great and full of artistry. some music is just there to be enjoyed and people should enjoy it without trying to convince themselves and everyone else that they have a highbrow, tasteful music taste. it's okay to enjoy fun music even if it isn't good music.
