What breaks capitalism to me is the fact that in theory, having a lot of money shouldn't be a bad thing. Extremely huge amounts of money could be used for things that _need_ a lot of money to be made, like advancements in technology, pharmaceutics, social reform, etc. But in reality, the huge amounts of money that exist _don't do anything_ and _don't go anywhere_ and that's why we are so fucked. 10 dollars in the hands of poor people goes around. You pay a store a 10 dollar bill, and that store uses the same 10 dollar bill to give some change to another client, and that client uses that change to pay for a drink on the street, and the person selling that drink uses that money to pay for bus tickets, and so that 10 dollar bill generated 40 dollars in transactions. Billionaires don't use most of their money for anything unless it is for tax breaks and that infuriates me.

"there's no way to ethically become a billionaire" is the statement that I find really revealing. I think I first heard it when Rihanna became a billionaire, but there's no way to become that wealthy without exploitation. I do believe that anyone who's that wealthy is a bad person. Because as much as people on the internet like to say "being rich doesn't make you a bad person" that's not the argument that's being made. Billionaires are bad (people) because it's impossible for them to become that wealthy without knowingly exploiting those in poverty. The wealth in itself does not make them bad people, it's the manor in which it was obtained. I appreciate that Ro points out that the extremely wealthy and those who defend them intentionally misunderstand and obfuscate points that don't benefit their argument of capitalism being good. The reality is that one day capitalism will have to end, whether we as a society choose to do so or not. By continuing it, we're making that choice without making it, because there isn't really a choice.

I think in the traditional way of owning a business and whatnot that may be true. But we can also not box them ALL together. While I do think most have had to do unethical things of different degrees, I don't think that is necessarily the case for everyone. OR they've had to sacrifice part of themselves in a way, which isn't feasible for everyone or even a good thing. I'm sure there's many people who've had hardships to get to where they are, specially people who come from poverty and because many might "forget" or turn a blind eye to the issues that they had while they were poor doesn't necessarily make them a bad person. It makes them a person of not good character but they're not automatically bad.

I think one leads directly to the other: if you have a society where people are not spending the bulk of their time simply surviving, the time is instead spent in other ways. Look, In 1999, 2/3, 66% of Chinese lived below the international poverty line. Now it's 0.5%. These are UN statistics, not CCP ones. This, according to the world bank, has changed it from a developing nation, into an upper-middle income nation, similar to Brazil. People are living often in shitty conditions due to the pollution caused by capitalism, true. So capitalism causes a terrible natural environment. However, for the vast majority, capitalism has been an absolute success for their personal lives, as long as they use government infrastructure and not use rivers with sewage. This is somewhat due to the elephant curve of capitalism, meaning that, even though wealth is grown immensely to the poorest, the most is grown to the 100%, and is thus not a good long term strategy. As a way for a nation to build quickly however, it's a godsend. Many would say "but building a nation by destroying the environment, leaving no plausible long term future is a terrible idea". That however is because we are using a western idea, where we have all the time in the world. Remember, China has a few problems that force them to try and be a world power in limited time. First, the effects of the One Child Policy. They cannot sustain an elderly population without much more resources, quickly. 2) growing protests for democracy. Always time sensitive, especially with places like Hong Kong. 3) The way the CCP works. They set strict time frames. 20 year plan for... 10 year plan for.... the way the CCP works is as a set time frame for a larger goal to ensure it is met. 4) the collective good of the people. It's a known part of culture. The valuing over community over individual, as the majority are succeeding, hurting the abject poor more, is seen as right, as a result of the general good.

I think the issue of the Cold War was capitalism vs. communism--the idea that the primary world-historical struggles of the past (and present) century are about democracy vs. authoritarianism is, imho, an archetypally liberal view that doesn't have a lot of explanatory or analytical value. The CIA was perfectly happy to coup democratically-elected socialists, and many US-backed regimes were quite brutally autocratic (including some that people have seemingly forgotten were ever dictatorships, like the right-wing regimes in South Korea, Taiwan, Greece, etc...) People throwing around hot takes about whether the PRC is capitalist or communist almost never know what they're talking about.

Communism, in its intended goal, is to have a stateless, classless, moneyless society. Socialism is the transitory state between capitalism and Communism, where the workers own the means of production and so on. One thing that Ro gets wrong is that democratic socialism does not refer to reformist policies about Taxation. That would be social democracy, which is basically capitalism with strong public welfare and strong social safety nets. Think Europe and the Nordic countries. They're much preferable compared to what we have now in America but they are still capitalist countries. Democratic socialism simply refers to socialism that is run democratically. How that comes about can vary, anywhere from reformism to revolution. Democratic socialism is in itself a bit of an oxymoronix misnomer, namely because socialism is inherently democratic and its mainly used by socialists to essentially say, "by god, I'm not one of those authoritarian 'socialists' like the Soviets". Socialism is inherently democratic. As much of a meme that it may be, "true socialism has never even tried out" still rings true. The Soviet Union, China (Mao to Jinping), Vietnam, North Korea, etc. and other so-called "Communist" countries were never socialist from the outset, any more than the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, otherwise known as North Korea, is any one of those adjectives. The workers do not own the means of production and there is no democracy in the workplace or in any other public sphere of life in those countries. All those aforementioned countries were simply state capitalist authoritarian dictatorships, who traded one form of aristocrats for another in the form of Party elites. Actions speak louder than words and names. China has never been socialist and defending China's atrocities does not advocate the cause for socialism at all. The opposite of America imperialism is not Chinese imperialism.

ro please never stop being a nerd, it's very satisfying to hear valid and informed criticism from others, aka what you're providing. just because humour cannot always be worked into commentary without sounding like a diversion or dismissal from the genuine point of analysis does not take away from the value of your channel and coherency of your videos.

I find it so irritating when people argue like "well without capitalism we wouldn't have X or Y, so we need it" first off, without capitalism, we wouldn't have a lot of really awful things like a trio of frog men on TV and child slaves. Second, capitalism didn't give us the iPhone or the car, people did with their labour. The difference between capitalism and socialism is not whether or not things get invented and progress is made, its who gets paid for it.

Your videos are so incredibly informative and funny, and I am so thankful I came across them. You have this charm and wit about you that is absolutely captivating. Although I agree with pretty much every opinion you offer, I appreciate the fact that you still have the compassion and perspective to understand that some people may not agree and (issue depending) that's okay. I'm 23, and it's honestly been such a blessing to be able to learn from you, and seeing your videos instills hope in me that younger and younger people are building morals that have the ability to save the world and enact justice for all of the social atrocity that older generations have perpetuated and let slide. Although the internet has created a lot of harm, I'm glad it led me to your videos.

Okay so your eye makeup, which looks so fucking fantastic by the way, is making it look like you have big cartoonish googly eyes when I see them in my peripheral vision. I keep looking at the "breaking news" and my brain goes, "is she fucking editing her eyes to be big saucers because of something astronomically dumb those guys said?" Anyway great video, 10/10, you're doing great
