Thank you, I've been hunting youtube for this recording for years. Hamelin definitely tries to keep this piece moving along.

Amazing how good these throat tones sound.......All Hail Hamelin. Hamelin-McLane-Wright and Hamelin-Allard-Brecker

It's ultra-specific, but I can also hear how McLane influenced Drucker in this recording.

This was 1931, the year his BSO contract was not renewed because he insisted on playing a metal Selmer --which I assume is what we are hearing here! What an interesting, bight, colorful sound.

I read that once a piano soloist commented, during rehearsal, of the beauty of the principal clarinetists playing, and Hamelin miffed Koussevitsky by holding up his metal clarinet and waving it ;-) . Another time, Koussevitsky and Hamelin had spatted over phrasing. Hamelin relented in rehearsal, but in the performance played as he himself deemed best. Afterwards the conductor confronted him and, after a lengthy tirade, concluded "You're are neither a gentleman nor a musician!" Hamelin riposted "Then I ought make a fine conductor -- oui?"
