This discussion suggests to me the possibility that Debussy may have actually composed the piece with chordal accompaniment and then simply taken the chords away. Whether or not that was the case, it’s an intriguing idea.

Very nice analysis! Do you know the jazz flutist Moe Koffman did a beautiful jazz arrangement of Syrinx many years ago on his album Master Session. I think Doug Riley harmonized and arranged the piece.
