Dear Arne and Carlos and also to all the crafters who are watching who create vlogmas videos, a massive, massive thank you. I am not sure any of you truly understand how much we subscribers enjoy being invited into your world. I have written and rewritten this so many times because it sounds so self-pitying. It's not meant to be, it's not the intention. I am just trying to express how you all sharing your Christmas preparations allows us to be part of it, to learn and understand different traditions and actually quite simply your joy of family and friends. For me, a widow with no children, living in a rural area very far from close friends and family, Christmas without all of you would be almost unbearable. I never have the true pleasure of seeing the face of someone opening a gift I have made and never am given a gift to open, not ever. Decorating for myself brings back too many memories of happy times in the past, as does cooking and baking. Sharing your memories takes this away and this magical and blessed time is not so lonely. May God bless you all bountifully.

I am sad to see these daily visits come to an end. I feel like I have been sitting in a chair across from you. I have learned so much about you, your culture, Norway, and knitting. I would like to thank Prym for sponsoring all of these podcasts. You have brought so much joy, laughter, and love into our homes. You each have special gifts that you have shared with us. You bring a sense of calmness to these crazy times and taught us that it is healthy to laugh at ourselves. How can we forget Carlos making the star or Arne’s love for sweets? The love and kindness that you show each other is inspiring. I wish you both a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Enjoy your time off and have fun skiing. Sending you much love. Looking forward to the last four podcasts of this year. ❤️

My father was Swedish and this is his recipe for glögg. Place in a saucepan the following ingredients-1 qt. Water, 2 heaping tablespoons whole cloves, 1 piece whole ginger, 2 pieces whole nutmeg, 6 dried prunes, 6 pieces dried apricots, 5 sticks cinnamon, 1 handful raisins, 2 tablespoons whole cardamom, 1 dried orange peel, 1/2 teaspoon caraway seed, 1/2 teaspoon cumin seed, 1/2 lemon. Slow boil for 2 hours. Pour 1 gallon port wine into a large pot and add 2 handsful raisins and 1 cup brown sugar. Strain out the first ingredients and add the liquid to the wine mixture. Bring to a simmer and add 2 fifths of vodka or aquavit. Serve hot in small glasses with an almond in each glass for good luck. Skåll!

In the Netherlands we drink "bisschopswijn" at “Sinterklaas”. Sinterklaas is a Christmas like children’s feast in which an old man with a white beard ands red robe gives presents to the children, only it is celebrated on December 5th. "Bisschopswijn" is a Glühwein like drink in which we heat the red wine with spices: orange with cloves stuck down in the orange skin and also star anise and cinnamon.

Thank you for another great Advent "calendar" video! I'm watching them only now (while knitting a Christmas ball), as I had neither time nor energy in the days leading up to Christmas, but it's lovely to have a very relaxed Christmas-preparing-atmosphere through your videos right now! I also love to hear your Christmas stories and the details about your traditions, ornaments, and items you use for the season. I hear you on candles and pets, too! We're allowed to share the living space of four very active cats, and due to their getting the zoomies on a regular basis where they also might jump everywhere, we no longer can have real candles in most places. We have a few large glass or ceramic containers which can't be pushed over or where a tail can come dangerously close to light real candles in while somebody is in the room, but otherwise we make do these days with electric ones. I'm German, and yes, our "Glühwein" is more or less the same as Glögg, although according to the Swedish Glögg recipes I know there's also some additional spirits in it which isn't standard in our Glühwein, but often chosen as add-on. You're usually drinking it when going to a Christmas market - TBH the majority of Christmas market visitors go there to thave their Glühwein and perhaps a Bratwurst, I've been told. Depending on the region there are also large quality differences - I'm from the south west and a wine region, and the best Glühwein is sold on vintner stalls and made from a certain brand of locally-produced red wine. Personally, I prefer the alcohol-free versions mostly called "kid's punch", as they're made of cherry juice or a mix of cherry and other red fruit juices, sometimes also blackcurrant, which adds a delightfully tart and fruity flavour to the drink. What I also know from my childhood is hot apple juice with cinnamon, but it needs to be the naturally-cloudy, unsweetened apple juice to taste really well. This we often got on Sundays when my family has met with friends and their kids outside for sledding or going to choose and cut down a Christmas tree (which was not too uncommon in smalltown Germany in the 80s). The other typical hot drink, particularly for kids, was hot chocolate with a dash of cinnamon and a dollop of whipped cream for afternoon "teas" in wintertime. On Christmas markets you'll find that also today, spiked with rum and called "Lumumba", but obviously an adult drink. In my family it was common in winter to have a teaspoon of rum in the afternoon black tea, together with a small piece of rock sugar. When I'm making Glühwein or fruit juice punch at home, I'm usually using cinnamon bark, crushed allspice, a clove or two, and two or three pods of crushed green cardamom, also brought to a boil and simmered for a few minutes with a small part of the wine and then topped with the rest of the wine to heat up without boiling. For the juice version the whole juice is used right away. Koselig, hygge, mysig - we call that "gemütlich", although we also have "kuschelig" which sounds like you pronounce koselig, but has a somewhat different meaning; it's describing rather the texture or state of an item or fabric. I'm currently particularly koselig, having one of my cats snuggling alongside my leg while I knit. Now if some kind elf would bring me a glögg or fruit punch, it'd be perfect! :o)

Kijafa was made in Denmark for years, but in more recent times it has been made in Finland and now Poland. It can be served by itself, or added to champagne or ginger ale for a cocktail. So tomorrow I'm off to get a bottle of delicious Kijafa.

The ice cider produced in Quebec, the French province of Canada, is a unique product that is often tasted during the end of the year celebrations. The quality of the orchards and the winter cold allow the production of this cider. My favorite is Neige du verger La face cachée de la pomme ( en français ). I don't know if you can find any in Norway, an absolutely fabulous country that I visited in 2019. Your shows are always interesting. Happy Holidays ❄️🎄❤️

In my little booklet I made many years ago of favorite family holiday recipes, I have a recipe for wassail, accompanied by a little fun fact about toasting. Excuse my abbreviated way of writing out recipes: “Though you may find it odd, the appearance of toast slices in the wassail cups was considered a great treat by those in the know in merry old England. In fact, the good cheer and kind wishes that inevitably accompany a few rounds of wassail gave rise to the expression "Drinking a toast." *WASSAIL BOWL* 8 sm. cored apples 2½ c. brown sugar 3 qts. ale or beer 1 fifth sweet sherry or Madeira 4 slices fresh ginger 1½ t. freshly grated nutmeg 1 t. ginger ¼ t. mace 4 whole cloves 4 allspice berries 6 sep. eggs 1 c. brandy, heated 8 slices buttered toast, quartered (opt.) Apples in baking dish - sprinkle w/ ½ c. brown sugar. Bake 30 min. In large saucepan, heat ale & sherry, 2 c. brown sugar and spices tied in bag. In lg. bowl, beat yolks till thick. Beat whites till stiff peaks & fold into yolks. Slowly add liquid to eggs by tablespoons till 1 c. has been added, then add remaining liquid in slow, steady stream, beating well with whisk. Place baked apples in heated punch bowl, add liquid, stir in brandy. Serve at once with buttered toast quarters to float or dip in wassail.

Some of your Norwegian words remind me of Welsh words. My husband is Welsh and one of the first Welsh words I learned was 'cwtch' which is pronounced 'cutch' like 'Dutch' or 'hutch'. When you say 'koselig' I think of the word 'cwtch'. ('W' is a vowel in Welsh). We often say something is cwtchy when it is cozy or snuggly. We also say cwtch instead of hug (which I think sounds similar to the Danish 'hygge'). One thing I love about your podcasts is when you share Norwegian culture with us. I am saving up for one of your knitting cruises for when the pandemic is over. After your road trip videos and all your stories, I really want to visit Norway.

It's amazing, but I have gotten so used to your time-keeping, that this episode really did feel like five minutes! :) My first year after college living in the northern US (Ohio, and I'm from Florida) I made a hot toddy "mix" and put it in a container in the freezer. Whenever I wanted some, I just spooned it out and added hot water. Since the alcohol was in the mix, it didn't freeze hard, so it was easy to spoon out! Yum! I love today's ball - perfect for the 4th Sunday in Advent. I did have to rummage for some yellow for the flame, though! I wasn't expecting it. Luckily, I had a VERY SMALL amount and used almost all of it on the four flames.

Hi Arne and Carlos We usually don't have a special drink, water is fine for us but, I remember one year we had warmed apple cider from a local apple orchard. It had cinnamon sticks and orange slices. It was way too sweet but good to warm you. I have been eating vegan for a year and a half and have really enjoyed the new lifestyle and health, bon appetite! A Candle is so precious, I have been creating the experience of "Hygge " trying to get through these last short days of the year. See you tomorrow.

In Canada - we make a mulled wine which is similar to the Norwegian drink. I remember some years ago going cross country skiing and after a long day and lots of fresh air an exercise on a cold and snowy day, enjoying a mug of mulled wine and blueberry buckle dessert. So delicious.

Helmer's stocking will look lovely hanging on the corner of the fireplace 🐶🧦 another puerto rican here, our drink is coquito (and it's cold)! I think you would love coquito Arne & Carlos 🥥 I love the mulled wines 🥃que delicioso 😋 I think some people that don't have the luxury of extra time are happy to buy a pre mixed spiced bevvy at the store, that way they don't miss out completely 🎄💚❤️💙🖤

Because it’s usually so hot at Christmas here in Australia we usually have cold drinks, my family drink a lot of cold ginger beer & cold apple cider. Many others just drink cold beer all summer.

So enjoying the Christmas Ball Advent Calendar! Thank you both for sharing your home, stories and life with us! ❤️ Here is a recipe that our family makes for Christmas: Wassail: 2 quarts apple cider 1 pint cranberry juice 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon aromatic bitters 2 cinnamon sticks 1 teaspoon whole allspice 1 small orange, studded with whole cloves 1 cup rum, optional Put all ingredients in crock-pot. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour, then low for 4-8 hours. Serve warm from crock pot. Makes about 12 cups. Peppermint Hot Chocolate with a kick: Make your favorite hot chocolate and add a shot of Peppermint Schnapps. You can add whip cream and/or crushed peppermint Candy or a candy cane as a stir stick. Yummy after skiing!

In Japan there is Amazake, a drink normally served hot, made from fermented rice. My favourite winter drink is the Korean Yuzu tea, made from Yuzu (a type of fragrant citrus fruit) jam and hot water.

I know here in the US I have had a hot toddy which is warmed apple cider with all the same spices that you use, I think that can also be made alcoholic as well but I believe it is either with rum or whiskey instead of wine. These are very seasonal here and great for warming up while in or just coming in from the cold of winter.

We didn't have alcoholic drinks when I was growing up. Hot spiced apple cider is the closest to Gluck. Americans used to make "punch" with liquor, spices and citric fruit. They left fire pokers in the fire and then plunged them in the punch bowl to heat the punch...little loss of alcohol that way!

Hi guys. In Australia it’s always a cold drink as the temperatures can be over 40 degrees in places! Beer, wine, champagne, maybe even cocktails. And while some families still have the traditional Christmas lunch, many of us will have seafood and salad etc. That said, my son insists on an English Christmas pudding with white sauce and rum!

Merry Christmas Arne and Carlos! We always make mulled wine on Christmas Eve, with either apple wine, or red wine. It sounds similar to what you made, with spices and orange peel. I have never put ginger in it though, so I may try that this year. Thanks for the daily videos; I have really enjoyed them!

We don't have a hot drink that we have because my husband didn't drink anything hot. I like tea with clove in it, but I drink that all the time so it's not special for Christmas. I went somewhere where we had hot spiced apple cider and I really loved that. I also had wassail (not sure if I spelled that right) once and liked that very much. My mom and I used to have some Bailey's Irish Cream together after church on Christmas Eve to toast the holiday. I really miss doing that with her, it's been a long time since we had Christmas together. I will really miss getting the turkey ready to go into the oven with my husband. It will be 6 months from losing him on the 23rd and I still can't believe he's gone.

In East of France, in Alsace and specially for Strasbourg's Christmas Market we have Vin chaud, hot wine. It's red wine with spices cloves, badiane, cinamon. Little like your glog but without almond and raisins. For people don't want alcool it's with apple juice.

I live in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States, but I got this recipe for Spiced Cider from a friend in Colorado and we’ve enjoyed it for many years. 2 quarts (1.9 liters) apple juice or cider, 7 whole allspice, 7 cinnamon sticks, 8 whole cloves, 1/2 c. Brown sugar. The instructions say to simmer for fifteen minutes but I throw it all in a crock pot, stirring in the sugar once it’s hot, and leave it warm all day or during a party. You can refrigerate the leftovers and reheat.
