Thorfinn as a character has been receiving hate from fans because he is "soft" and "weak". I disagree with all my heart. You misunderstood Vinland Saga and this video aims to revisit the story of Vinland Saga
Vinland Saga season 2 has come to an end. If you're a fan of Vinland Saga, then you know why this season is special! The arc is titled Farmland Arc or the Slave Arc and is by far one of the best parts of the original manga. This anime series is truly exceptional and it's sure to captivate your attention from beginning to end. With stunning visuals and thrilling action, Vinland Saga Season 2 is a must-watch for fans of anime everywhere! I will say this, it does suck that we will not get more episodes of Vinland Saga. We will have to wait for season 3 to come out. Vinland Saga Season 2 was beautiful, there were so many heartbreaking moments and so much growth for our beloved characters like Thorfinn. I will catch up to the manga since Studio Mappa might not be working on a season 3 for a long time. Who knows...
As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments below! Enjoy the video!

Side note my favorite episodes from Vinland Saga season 2 are episodes 9, 12, 17,20,21, and 22! The anime openings are truly awesome and I love having the soundtrack on in the background when reading normal books aswell as manga and manhwa!

I remember your old video on Vinland Saga and I will say this again here. Vinland Saga is truly one of a kind, its hard to find anime that manage to do what Vinland Saga does. The violence and animation are great but it comes down to characters like Thorfinn and Asekladd, that make the series all the more better.

Some people might argue that the execution of some parts could have been better, but what cements this story's position for me is how daring and completely abnormal it is compared with modern storytelling. Cynicism and doubt pervade most of the good modern stories, and for good reason: how could we believe that things could be good when it's clear that so much is going to shit? Yet Vinland Saga chooses to answer this question in the most optimistic way possible while not denying the fact that evil really does exist, and that no man really has the power to confront it all on his own. It is a genuine problem I have with a lot of literature, because even in the really good ones, they only ever ask the question of why is everything so awful, but never provides the answr. Vinland Saga has the answer: go out and help. Become a true warrior. Do good. It's such a simple message, but one that has all but vanished from modern media and even religion, where everyone is only concerned about rights and privileges and punishing the "wicked" from their point of view.

this is very akin to my own feelings on Vinland Saga. like... Thors gives us the show's thesis statement at the beginning: "you have no enemies. nobody has any enemies. there is no one that you need to hurt." it's the most impossible thing to believe... looking around at the world, it seems to provide evidence to the contrary constantly. I think that, if you believe Thors already, then watching season 1 is watching a tragedy. but if you can't believe Thors, or you're struggling with it, or you're on the fence... season 1 is proof. and it has to start by acknowledging the hardest, worst, most hopeless and frustrating potentials of the human experience. this is how you know the story means it. this is how the story convinces you to believe it. we're not just painting over the flaws... there are huge problems to overcome. but we have to choose to do it anyway. the fight for peace is the hardest struggle you can choose. do it anyway... especially when it's hard. that's when it's most important. "you have no enemies" won't be true until you decide to make it true, starting with your own two hands. it's a statement of intent, and it is also teachable. violence is easy, but it will leave you with no joy if you keep falling into it. kindness is hard, but it's the process by which you create good in the world wherever you are. both are a cycle, and you can perpetuate it. you just have to keep choosing it, over and over again, every time.
@juicejooos
@juicejooos Жыл бұрын
I disagree. Modern stories *only* care about saying that you should be good, to the point that people are being brought up thinking of that exclusively, while completely disregarding why they should do it, or why evil exists in the first place. For the example you made about "modern activism", people you're referring to I see disregard empathy to put the empowerment of the person acting in favor of such activism as the center, because doing good is treated almost like a job, with its own priced value. And I think Thorfinn is different because, in his eyes, there is no inherent value and there is never a direct course of action he can take that would solve every situation, because no person is the same: the focus is always about the people involved and what's happening in a situation, not about how he fits into such a situation or what he can do or say that makes him right. I guess you can say it's selflessness in its purest form.

I was a pretty big fan of the first season of Vinland Saga, but it always felt like it was following a shonen character through a seinin world and, practically all the way to the end, Thorfinn maintained that role without showing much in the way of growth. I loved Askeladd, and while I enjoyed watching Thorfinn, I can't say he stood as much more than a vehicle for vengeance who lost his opportunity in the end. S2 showed the kind of growth in his character that I was looking for and the slower pacing allowed his development to build out more organically. Einar was a strong complement to him, representing both the people that he slaughtered during his blind rage (his past) and the peaceful life that he started out seeking aimlessly (gaining experience through the work on the farm) and eventually chose as his path forward (founding a peaceful society in Vinland). I also love that, while Canute stood in stark contrast to the pacifistic life he was developing, his confrontation with him wasn't what solidified his path forward. Instead, it became a demonstration of his resolve, one so powerful that it moved a man who had done his best to eschew his humanity not to anguish or fear, but to laughter. He evoked a strong positive emotion from one who had forgotten what it was like to feel that in pursuit of power. It also helped that this season had some of the best single episodes of any anime I've seen in recent memory, particularly Oath and Way Home. So, yeah, big fan of S1, bigger fan of S2. Great video.

it's not even the fault of those people who abandon Vinland Saga because "it gets boring" or "Thorfinn became soft and weak". the glorification of violence in media since ever is the fault, even the Season 1. Sure from Season 1 it's still a commentary about violence is bad, but truth be told the violence there is pretty cool. Thorkell vs Thorfinn is cool, Thorfinn killing all the soldiers is cool, all the atrocities Askellad did is very scary, but Askellad himself is cool. so it's okay if people thinks S2 is bad because they abandon the violence, because we so used to violence being cool in media (movie, series, game, book, etc) so a full season of commentary about a person who went on violence rampage his whole life realizing his deeds is wrong and went searching for forgiveness is not everyone cup of tea. but man i love season 2. it's my personal opinion but Vinland Saga is my favorite media ever. it's kinda biased opinion, but that's what opinion is. it touches my heart and all the messages it trying to deliver resonate with me fully. i love all the character and the best part is everyone in this story felt like a real person, who you can talk to and have a conversation with. sorry for the long comment, but for those who still want to give S2 a chance and be open minded about it, i'm sure it'll be an experience you will never forget.

8:43 I'mma get this out of the way, being a hero has nothing to do with morality. A hero is someone who has a purpose greater than oneself. So when Thorfinn finally makes the decision to find Vinland, that is when he became a true hero (true warrior), same with Canute wanting to create paradise on earth, it makes him the villain to the perspective of those he prosecutes, but he's still a hero nonetheless no matter the morality of his actions.

@@hish33p32 The real meaning of hero from the Greek is protector or defender. Thorfinn is none of those things, in fact there is foreshadowing of this when he breaks the kid's arm. Heroism is everything to do with morality, the realisation that slavery is immoral, war is immoral, and creating a safe space for those like Arnheid is the right, heroic, thing to do. Canute is the opposite, and follows the opposite trajectory, he starts off as the pacifist and in his desire to help others ultimately becomes the thing that causes so much pain and grief.

@@Lommyism Well it's just my opinion atleast, because I've seen videos in philosophy defining "Hero" as the person in a story generally the protagonist having a purpose being greater than themselves, take Eren for example, similar to Canute, objectively both of them are villains, but if seen from their perspective in which, they're this morally grey character where their ultimate intentions are for a better future, this grand goal of theirs can be seen as heroic depending on which side you agree upon, despite their hypocrisy though I'd also rather be a greater evil if it meant defeating evil like the quote "Fight fire with fire", in the way i see it, The routes these utilitarianists take are the riskier methods but are more likely to produce results where as someone like Thorfinn, Deku, Naruto or any other deontological protagonist, i see their methods as "playing it safe" and can even be called masochism at times like how some other ethnicities call japanese people masochists for always blaming themselves when their righteousness fails to produce the results they want.

To be fair.... ALL that vinland proves is.... Modern anime/manga lost its touch, they just can't come up with deep genuine writing as much as they did in the past cause VINLAND came out in 2005 (manga), but its just SLOW to get an anime. in fact, the anime after 2 seasons, is already 8 years worth of the manga AKA end of S2 was where the manga is in 2013. And one thing I noticed is any manga from pre-2010s or even 2000s are good, but newer ones are rarely on the same level. Which is why for many years I argued that post-2010s anime tends to lose its touch lately across the board, focusing too much on animation and foreigner expectations rather than what anime and manga really known for.

Seeing both characters affected by war and violence but in different ways and different circumstances collide . I think Thorfinn being confronted by his past was very important and having Einar there is internal. Einar ultimately forgives Thorfinn and reminds him that we are alive because someone kept us alive, and that Thorfinn shouldn't throw his life away so carelessly, no matter the hardships. Because despite the suffering and brutality the world brings, there is beauty to be found in living . In Einar's own way, I think he was trying to tell Thorfinn he deserves to live , despite his past mistakes and sins . This in a way inspires Thorfinn to try and get to Vinland to create a place without the threat of violence or slavery .

Vinland Saga is one of the best gateway anime in years. So many anime fall into common tropes that have come to define the medium as a whole, but Vinland Saga is like the anime equivalent of a historical drama like Lawrence of Arabia or Seven Samurai. The anime is full great storytelling, dialogue, and acting in both sub and dub.

Also I never thought Thorfinn was necessarily being selfish in season 2, selfish wouldn't be the word I'd use. I feel in the beginning he was drowning with his guilt without doing anything about it. By the end of season 2 Thorfinn works towards atonement. And hopefully if we get a season 3&4 , we will see the full lengths Thorfinn goses to, to try and atone.

What makes Vinland Saga so compelling is seeing a character, who's trying to go a different path to only fight to protect and use self defense without killing anyone . Trying to create instead of destroying. The world Thorfinn resides in is consumed by violence and romanrizes violence . It's glorified . He tries to atone and become a better man. An interesting juxtaposition from a brutal viking in the past, to a more kind and compassionate protagonist. He learns of truth and seeks to create a place without the threat of violence or slavery. The point of Vinland Saga is to get to Vinland and to create . But it's not easy . Thorfinn gets more scars when he dosen't kill, but he still hopes to find another alternative than to kill. People still die in this world . Which makes Thorfinn's journey very difficult . The point isn't to save the world from all violence, it's trying to battle with the idea of violence and living a different way than what is expected of you in viking society. Thorfinn dosen't want to hurt anyone or have others suffer as he did . That's why Thorfinn tries so hard not to kill. He uses the skills he learned from war , as a means to incompasiate one's who direct violence at him or those around him without killing . To save a live and to defend his own life.

Because he let his vengeance and haterd consume him, he never was able to move forward, never able to grow , never able to change . That's why Thorfinn's growth and change in season 2 is so powerful.

Thorfinn in episode 10 in the beginning states he wants to try and create a place without the threat of slavery or violence. To create a peaceful nation.And towards the end of season 2 , Thorfinn takes many blows to the face in order to see Canute to stop any more bloodshed or Inoccences from dying . Thorfinn is making those steps towards atonement in season 2 but it's only the beginning for Thorfinn's journey of atonement. Plus we still got plenty of material to cover in the Manga of Vinland Saga.

Vinland Saga season 2 hits that much deeper because of how real it all feels. There's meaningful weight to everything that happens . Every character matters and contributes to the story in a very impactful way.

I feel that episode 4 also added alot of depth and complexity to Einar's character. When Einar tries to choke Thorfinn, in a blinded rage , he eventually stops himself when hearing Thorfinn scream and cry in his sleep. This felt every real and realistic. I can't explain it well. But most of the characters in Vinland Saga feel like real people and act like real people. Idk if what I'm saying makes sense but yeah.

Watching Thorfinn admit to himself and Einar that the thing that’d kept him alive all those years was not his will to survive, not his desire to go home, not even the memories of his father, but his raw VITRIOL for Askeladd was for me the most shocking moment in the whole two seasons. It takes some massive introspection and humility to admit out loud that you’ve basically thrown your life away being an evil person, yet choosing to live to make things right, *despite* it being practically impossible. I’ve never seen an anime character take such a drastic 180 and still feel like a genuine human being, I’m nothing short of inspired by Vinland Saga.

My personal opinion, Thorfinn was never weak. He was just a slave to his vengeance and resentment. He not only hurt himself but others and Inoccences for selfish reasons. It's easy to destory . It's alot harder to protect and create .

different tastes, different people.. i honestly didnt like s2 that much, it felt like a switch and bait from season 1 where it was super hype and it slowed down suddenly, some people appreciate the slow and beautiful story telling, and some are disappointed because they were expecting more of what they saw originally.. the problem was that people were fighting to prove each other wrong, cursing each other and calling it bad tastes, when in reality its not for everyone. respect people's opinions and they'll give respect back.. you don't like it? its completely fine, wish you good luck finding an anime you like.. you like it? thats also fine. i've seen so many detailed criticism that people give and fans deny it by saying "grow up shounen kid", literally honest opinions go down the drain. thats the problem with most communities, and many people have got to realize that

Idk man, but I think the AoT ending hate came from *some delusional Jaegerists* who were so immersed with the idea of revenge, but got so disappointed to see Eren "acting like a p***y" at the end, even calling him a simp. 😂 i feel like this is the same type of people who would hate VS S2. They radiate that exact same behavior.

@@annie-scI read the manga way before and was disappointed with how fast the ending felt. It was rushed, and I don't think Eren really resolved his inner conflict or ever moved past the person he became. Similar with how demon slayer ended (no spoiler). I want characters to continue growing even up till the end of a story, usually by coming to terms with self sacrifice. My preferred ending for Eren would probably have been if he decided of his own accord to halt the rumbling and retracted all titan powers into himself before crystallizing, falling asleep for all eternity and becoming a sort of forgotten monument to humanity's survival until the end of days. His friends would come to see him now and then until they left, and then millennium would pass and civilizations would rise and fall until one day, humanity simply did not exist on Earth anymore. Then Eren would awake from his slumber and walk the Earth one last time before crumbling to ashes, since he had long passed his 13 year limit while sealed away.
@cokecan6169

At the end of AOT, it felt like Armin and Mikasa were the only ones that really grew, Eren was still trapped in his past and never escaped. Spoiler if you haven't read demon slayer manga I was disappointed with the ending there as well because Tanjiro ultimately could not adhere to his philosophy of love and kindness. Before, the entire story followed the idea of "monsters exist and they're horrible, but they suffer as well, so I will still feel sorry for them" but the ending turned into "well I guess some monsters are irredeemably evil so fuck them?" Ideally Tanjiro would have looked into Muzen's soul while they were combined and realized the depth of hurt and loneliness he felt, and perhaps taken his own life while promising his greatest enemy to stay by his side, showing the ultimate love and forgiveness and cementing his character as a true light in the darkness. People would mourn, and his legacy would be golden. Plus side is we could still do the reincarnation chapter with this. But the ending turned out to be "at the end of the day, Tanjiro is still only human." This means his character growth is incredibly tiny, almost non existent, because he was kind from the very start. The only thing he learned as a human soul throughout the entire story was that some people aren't worth crying for.

Vinland Saga really is in a league of its own. The only big disappointment is Thorfins naive solution to just run away from all the bad things in the world. 10:00 Something to think about. Animals are selfish. A wolf finds whatever is weak and feeds on it, simply as it is hungry. It does not care for justice, fairness, kindness or any sense of morality man understands. It does not have thoughts of the future, it acts on instinct naturally moving for nothing but its own benefit. By our standards, this is the making of an evil man. Now I present to you the rabbit. While it is weak, harmless and inconsequential, how does it compare? It too seeks out whatever is weak to sate its hunger, and also care little for anything but it's own benefit. It's thinking is just as simple, just as selfish. Weakness isn't kindness. Man is far more capable of being a menace than either of these. The sins of being too hard are not fixed by becoming too soft. In this story these are simply two immature steps in a young mans life. Both are build on naïve self interest natural to all living things. This is not something to criticize, it simply displayed the difficulty of maturing a complex mind to hold valuable skills, good judgement, and hopefully in the future well practiced virtues. Too much apathy makes a monster, to much compassion a victim. There are significantly better things for a man to be.

Also, instead of having yet another one-sided tirade about isekai at the start of your video, you could have compared the success of Vinland Saga 2 to the likes of Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, or Kimetsu no Yaiba. I think three good anime that can help a person understand what I'm talking about are, 86, Food Wars, Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These. These anime all can show to a way of looking at how battles and people work to how a fight can be a language in it's self. BTW I do think season is good but I just heavily dislike season 2 and think people don't know how season 1 was made and tells a character.
