A tracheostomy tube is a device which is inserted into the neck. It helps a person breathe or clear respiratory secretions. When a patient no longer needs the tracheostomy tube, the medical provider may decide it is time to remove the tracheostomy tube. This process is called decannulation. My husband spent 7 months with the tracheostomy. After almost 7 weeks of having it capped, he finally was decannulated. His stoma is still not completely closed after 16 days of decannulation. Thank you for your informative videos. Wish you the best!.

There really is nothing else for Breathing Support now when you have Respiratory Failure because you need the Vent to Breathe for you. But VOCSN Vents are better than Trilogy Vents were because your Suctioning and Cough Assist are all done by your Vent now so you do not need to be disconnected from your Breathing support Circuit at all to do it and that is scary when you have no breathing function to get disconnected from the Vent so it is better than Trilogy Vents were before this because everything is done by the Vent and you stay Breathing while it is getting done.

The public doctor advised us to start practicing capping my sibling's tracheostomy tube at home. But my sibling is having difficulty breathing because of the cuff or balloon blocking the airway. Is it really okay to cap a tracheostomy tube with a cuff?

Hello. Thank you for your question. It is best to ask this question to sibling's doctor. Some cuffed tracheostomy tubes such as Bivona Tight to Shaft can be used during capping, but in general, an uncuffed tracheosotmy tube is usually used. Please talk to your sibling's medical doctor to address this concern.

HI, I"m facing decanulaiton soon as I only have my tracheostomy for obstructive sleep apnea. I've had a tracheostomy sine 1986 but they no longer make the Tracheostomy model I use so have to use CPAp. I'm hoping the stoma will close but am unsure after almost 36 years. thanks again for this video.

Unfortunately The RT (Respatory therapist) and My doctor's aren't cooperating with me, and want to send me home with my Trachea, And that's not an option for me as my current condition will only worsen if i go home, because if i do and something happens there's a good chance i might not be able to make it in time to my hospital. Im currently trying to breath without it, so i can be able to remove the trachea. My best so far has been 1hour, Im expected to do 8-12 hours. And I need some tips on how to breath with the Swedish nose.

Hi! I started watching your videos about 2 months ago. My son has a trache and right now is a being capped. My son was only 1lb at birth and was struggling to beathe on his own. It has been a long four years for him and my family. Before the year ends the doctors are going to remove his treahe, although we still have a long road ahead of us, I believe that everything will be okay. Thank you for sharing your story

So this is a Post about getting Tubing changed too and you should probably show people what it is like to be Suctioned too and disconnected from your Breathing Support so they know what that is like too. Decannulation is more for people who are able to Breathe without a Vent and do not need to be Suctioned and needs Cough Assist done with your Breathing Support Equipment and a lot of things need to be done.

You really cannot have Decannulation when you are Ventilator Dependent and have Respiratory Failure because you need it to be suctioned and connected to the Vent so you need it for the rest of your life but you need to get it changed to not get Infections because that happens whenever you have tubing in my body and has happened to me and I need IV Antibiotics again and it is not easy to do that and I just hope that they work for me. So getting your tubing changed more helps but you still can get Infections.

Ok my question is. If I been on a trachea for 3 yrs and I finally got it taken out. Why do I still have complications with my breathing? Is it because how long it's been in there and if it should have been changed frequently prior to the surgery and after the surgery days? For instance like I have surgery then I wait like maybe 3 or 4 months before going into surgery again from all the damaged tissues and she does the bronchoscopy surgery. Also how long you think I might heal up cause I have a hole and it still not closing up as fast yet.

Hello. I am sorry to hear of all your struggles. Your trachea may need time to heal. There may be granulation tissue in your airway. The tissue will make it difficult to breathe. It may take a while for the body to repair itself. The hole from where the tracheostomy tube was will take 6 months to a year to completely close. If it has been longer than this, please consult with your doctor.

Hi, thank you for sharing ur experience and educating us. I have a question.. if a trach came out accidentally, still next to ur neck, do u put that same trach back in or do u need to get a different one to put in?

That is a great question. I will try to record a video and post it in the next week or two. In the meantime, I will try to explain it with words. If the part of the trach tube which is inserted into the airway did not touch anything, then you can put the same one back in. But if the part of the trach tube which is inserted into the airway touched anything (such as your hands) then a new trach tube should be used. When in doubt, it is best to use a new trach tube.
