Anthropocentricism is so ingrained in understanding world history. Amitav Ghosh, my favourite writer, is such a scholar for our times. Another like him in the next 50 years is hard to imagine - the last from his generation. Rashmi - how lovely to see you from good old days at DH! Nicely done!

Thank you for this wonderful interview. Having read many of Mr Ghosh's works - currently " _Gun Island_ ", hearing him in an engaging conversation adds another dimension to my reading joys. As for the question of accessing a more Indian perspective on history, Delhi-based historian William Dalrymple has worked very hard to do just that and I recommend his wonderful book "The Last Mughal". Many thanks and warm regards from Sydney - David

Foreign travellers throughout the history have written copiously about India , but Indians hardly ever wrote about anything about distant shores. From time immemorial we Indians perhaps are the most insular navel gazing nation.

@@FilesdocumentsAndreposit-kr3vb can you name a few of such Indian authors? Indian history was practically written by foreigners including British scholars. I wonder what the colonial rulers have to gain by destroying reports of Indian scholars about other contemporary civilisations.

Good intetview but too short. The issues could have been explained to mon expert in more detail. Rashmi had clearly done her homework so it appeared to be dialogue between two experts with an ordinary.punter struggling to keep up.
