I really like pastel winter color palette you did on the snowflake Mandela, the pink and mint green colors go so well together.

Thank you so much for the tip on using warm or french greys when you feel like you need another color! I've ruined (in my opinion) numerous pictures by pulling in a random color that just sticks out like a sore thumb. I also really enjoyed your husband's sunset photos that you included. And I can't wait to see your winter wip completed. It's stunning!

So glad you found the tip useful! I've done that in the past, too - added in another colour because I needed something else which then unbalanced the whole colour scheme. The "add a grey" idea came to me while doing those mandalas. :) And I've now finished the Rita Berman page - I'll "unveil" it in my January finished pages video. :)

I know exactly what you mean about adding in one too many colours. It's something I do all too often. I found myself agreeing with every single word you said. But I finished the name plate page in Winter Wonderland a few days ago and I'm so pleased with the result. Trying to work with a limited, muted palette I'd struggled with the fruit (?) in the top left corner. I needed another colour but I knew it would ruin the page then I came up with the same idea as you did! The grey worked perfectly. I loved it in your Xmas tree page and Matchstick Mouse. Hard to pick a favourite, all your pages are beautiful this month. I've been using my pit pens much more since discovering your channel and while I'm trying to keep my spending right down, I might buy a small set of the Staedtler. Thank you.

That's awesome! :) I tend to stick with lots of greys and grey-browns (and lots of white) with just soft pops of colour (soft blues, soft greens, etc.). I'm really enjoying doing the mandalas - hope you enjoy it, too! :)

I know what you mean about winter sunsets. Here in the UK, when we do get some clear sky, we often get spectacular pale pink sunsets, especially when they highlight some of the blue gray clouds. People always talk about shading snow with blue, but I've seen some fantastic pink snow sunsets. I'm slightly worried about the mandala WIP where you've used masking fluid. I've come a cropper in the past leaving it on too long, and it cured itself permanently to the paper. I believe it was a Windsor & Newton not Pebeo. I hope you get yours off the paper successfully, it looks like it will be a beautiful picture.
@colouringchemist Жыл бұрын
Yes! I've seen those beautiful pinky/peachy snow sunsets, too - so stunning. :) I didn't mean to leave the masking fluid on as long as I did - time got away from me. :) But thank you for the reminder! Luckily, it came off perfectly (although the background turned out to be... well, folks will see how it went when I post the video ;)). I used the Pebeo masking fluid pen - I'm thinking maybe putting on only a really thin layer of the fluid might be key in how easily it comes off. The pen automatically dispenses a small amount of the fluid - that's one of the reasons I like using it. :) Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Connie, commenting part way through again, but when you were talking about the JB Christmas tree you are actually instinctively hitting on some art colour theory concepts! Achieving a range and balance of light and dark tones within a limited amount of colours seems to produce some visually striking results. And yes, I do think some maths/sciency principles apply in art too….and just knowing when to break “rules” makes the difference with really good artists.
@colouringchemist Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for chiming in, Jackie! I think sometimes I "stumble" across art theory by accident. ;) :) I'm still afraid to "break the rules" - particularly since I don't really know the rules to begin with. ;) I'm enjoying learning, though!
@spare_room_studio Жыл бұрын
@@colouringchemist you are doing great. As long as you enjoy what you do that’s the goal….and even minimal colour theory goes a long way when applied to colouring 👍

Adding dimension to Johanna Basford’s Christmas tree would be difficult as she hasn’t used any perspective on the decorations. It is like that with a lot of her work - she draws all round surfaces as flat. And you can’t work against the original picture.

Ah - that makes sense. :) That's the kind of "art knowledge" that I don't have and love learning - thank you so much for teaching me! :)
