Program Notes:
Mental health is an integral part of the human experience. For some, it can be a complex and challenging part of life. The month of December can be a trying time for many. The American holiday season can create anxiety, social pressure, and feelings of isolation for those who are already struggling. As well as this, the expectation for one to act appropriately festive can increase frustrations. It is important for us to recognize these issues and to support one another in whatever way we can. Even small gestures can go a long way to increase someone’s self-esteem or change the trajectory of their day.
Likewise, it is important to ask for help if you are feeling trapped, and trust that others will be there for you. This work is a consolation for those struggling with mental illness. They are valiant fighters going unnoticed by many, and who risk not being understood or perceived appropriately. Keep pressing on through these long nights and cold winters. It is all part of life’s journey. You matter.
