Probably one of 2 scenarios. It was a late build in 97 and they ran out of 97 cabs and switched to 98 parts. Or It was vin swapped and rebuilt because for a number of probable different reasons, and that is why it was repainted.

Looks like it'll be a fun build to do. Your direction with it is going to depend on how hard the truck will be used. I know some folks don't care for the AFC Live's but I personally like it. A little pump timing while inside the front cover and it'll feel a lot stronger and more responsive. ARP has head bolts that'll handle 500hp, with no need to machine the rockers. I have them on my 97 and they're holding up great. Lastly, remove the heater bowl, flush out all the lines and fluids you can find and check on those front wheel bearings cause they take a beating. Good luck with the build. I'm sure you guys will make good use of that unicorn, even if it's been cab swapped, still a cool truck.

I wonder if your title Vin match the Vins on the cab? Core support, driver door jam, dash, glove box, and under the carpet under the passenger seat. There are probably other locations… I’m betting on that being a ‘99 cab. Cool truck for sure, always wanted a dually 2nd gen to match my 98 12 valve.

My first 2nd Gen was a 98 12 valve 5 speed 4x4 with a quad cab. I wish I still had that truck. I was 2nd owner and only had 26k miles on it. Drove that truck back and forth from Colorado to California 5 times a year. I was told there wasn’t enough 24 valve Cummins to complete the trucks that year so they threw the new quad cabs on what they had left over. Only for 98 and not 97. You might have a cab swapped 97.

My bet is with cab swap, that truck would not have let the factory with 2 different trims on it. And personally have never heard of a 97 dash with 98 interior unless someone has swapped a 12v motor and dash into it. As for the cab lights they are aftermarket so cab may or may not be even off a 1 ton originally because without taking headliner down it’s impossible to know if they are factory cab lights. But that would also tell you if that is also original build, if it’s not factory wiring for the cablights that cab is not a factory dually. Either way beautiful truck and if it’s taken care of it has a lot of miles a head of it

The smoke smell will be with the truck from now on. Best practice is to strip the interior completely. Pressure wash or replace the carpet &padding, wash the seat covers, let the seat foams bake in the sun for several days. Use a detailers steam cleaner to clean the vents and ducts, interior plastics, console assembly, dash, door jambs. Back of the door panels have insulation that hold the smoke smell. Keep a can of Ozium in the console, a small spray every few days will greatly help. Airlines used this in airplane cabins when you could smoke on planes. Ugly as they may be, leave the window vents installed. Crack the windows when the truck is parked during the day. Down in Texas, the heat will bring that smoke smell back to life. My 2nd gen was a smoker cab. You have a cab/vin tag swapped truck. The original Crysler rosette vin tag rivets can be purchased to make a tag swap look factory. The green paint and side body moldings of course give it away.

Cab was definitely swapped. 94-97 VIN tags were riveted to dash. 98-02 vin tags were riveted to cab. Someone swapped that dash into that cab trying to replicate a "98 12 valve". Or its a 98-02 truck that someone swapped a 12 valve drivtrain and dash into. There should be a VIN tag on the driver side rear door. Another VIN tag is located on the front of the core support.

Sounds like the fuel pump timing gear slipped. In stock form turbos hold up well.

Somebody bone headed that turbo line.

Sorry but nothing rare here. Its a 97 truck that has had a 98+ quad Cab swapped on to it and then swapped over the 97 dash. Hence there reason there has been some paint work done also.

The only thing that I can see that you are doing wrong with this truck is that you're gonna give it to your brother instead of me! 😂😂😂 That's an awesome truck. It's definitely a diamond in the rough, but any brother should be honored and thankful to be on the receiving end of this plan!!!

I owned a '98 12 valve 5 speed dually. I'd buy another if it came across my plate. I currently have 2 '97 12 valve 5 speeds.
