These are the 5 main things I look at when I am looking to buy a 1st gen cummins.
My List:
1. Body - rust and dents
2. Engine - KDP, oil leaks, turbo shaft play, blow by
3. Configuration - (see below)
4. Stock vs. Modified
5. Wiring

Here is some information detailing some of the 1st gen cummins configurations that i referenced in the video:
Single cab: 1989 - 1993
Club cab: 1992 - 1993
Crew cab: Offered through 1985 (no cummins options available from factory)
1989 - 1991: Non-intercooled engine (6" tall frame
1991.5 - 1993: Intercooled (8" tall frame)
Transmission
1989 - 1991: 727 3 speed automatic (available is 3.07 gears)
1991.5 - 1993: a518 3 speed + overdrive automatic (available in 3.54 gears)
1989 - 1993: getrag 5 speed manual (available in 4.10 or 3.54 gears)
NP205 transfer case in all 4wd 1st gens
