On November 13th, 1820, American sailor Henry Palmer and his men landed on an island close to the Antarctic Peninsula, he eventually named Deception Island. What happened over the next 2 days was mysterious and unbelievable.
For the longest time Palmer refused to make the grisly details public of what happened, finally revealing the disturbing events that took place shortly before his death in 1877.
What happened 137 years later when a group of Australian scientists landed on the island was even more horrific, adding more speculation the island should be left alone and uninhabited. The events that took place in 1957 were kept a secret by the Australian government for decades before one of the scientists, American born Richard McCready, eventually broke his silence of what happened there.

Okay, not really sure what's going on here. McCready, Palmer, Norris, Clark are the names of most of the main characters in 1982 "The Thing". Also bits of dialogue from the movie are used in this story, and they were rescued by the Norwegians? Somebody's pulling a fast one on us.

Dad's cousin used to work on Deception Island as a meteorological surveyor. He used to say to dad something about some volcanic entity and a perpetual feeling of being watched. Excellent narration, and as usual, we need more, more and even more.

Deception Island is a well know tourist attraction. Actually it is the ring of a more or less still active vulcano, At one side it is open to the sea and medium sized ships can enter the caldera. A strech of some 500m sandy beach is still hot from underneath. Until a couple of years ago tourists could dig a pool there and enjoy a bath in the warm water on an Antarctic island. For environmental reasons they don't allow this pleasure anymore. Not far away from the warm beach the British operated a secret military base during WW2, as they were afraid of German U-boats which could eventually hide on Deception Island. But no Germans appeared and after the war the vulcano eruped, so the British had to leave and later decided to abandon their base. You can still see the impressive remains. However, there are no mysteries at the island whatsoever, it's just an interesting place to visit in the Antarctis.

My Brother worked for the Antarctic Survey on the Deception and other Islands in that Part of the South Shetlands, It was a Geological Survey area and active Volcanic eruptions were common, he was there for One and a Half Years this was in the 1950's, he never ever talked of Horror stories, he was with 30 odd other Men working for the Royal Navy and the Geological survey. He was a Scientist involved in Tectonics.

over the many years of me reading about exploration of both poles, Deception island has always had a weird history. one story, assuming i'm not getting it mixed up with others, had something to do with the volcano firing off, and the shock wave killing a few, wounding everyone from a whaling ship.

The Thing was based on a short story Who Goes There? Written in 1938 by Don Stuart, an American science fiction writer. The character names in the book were adopted by The Thing, and also an earlier film adaptation, The Thing from Another World made in 1951.

Arrgh. I'm reading the comments while watching this and they're all talking about what a good horror story it is. Now, l don't know what to do. Its 2.30 AM, I live alone and horror stories scare me senseless BUT I'm totally intrigued. 😳

Funny my dad didn't say anything after spending 3 months there with BAS in the 50s. Called deception Island because you could not see the harbour from the sea.

I don't know what specifically makes your stories so awesome, there are many contributors I do know that. I too, stumbled on your channel through my recommended from YT. Finally the algorithm gets it right.❤ The more I ponder these specifics I conclude that sometimes it's not necessary to know what specifically what makes something great, it's just important to know that it is & where to go to get more. Thanks for sharing your talent & creativity with the rest of us.❤Another amazing story.

Thanks for this story. I'm a big fan of H.P. Lovecraft and Gothic horror as a genre. The Oracle at Delphi in ancient Greece may have gone into her trances and produced her prophecies due to gases venting from hot springs, etc. in the ground. SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN presented this in an article back in the 1980s or 1990s as I recall. Given that there is volcanic activity on Deception Island, it's quite possible that gases from volcanic vents could have driven these men to crazed and bizarre behavior. Inhaling things like propane is NOT a good idea. As for the red stones it's possible that they were radioactive ☢️ or contained poisons like arsenic, cadmium, lead and other heavy metals. Any of these can cause severe brain damage.
