Deceptive Simplicity | Understanding Kirby Air Ride

Kirby Air Ride is probably one of the most misunderstood games in the GameCube's game library. It's been the subject of many discussions over what even constitutes a "racing game", and I feel like it's worth taking a deeper dive into the thought process behind it.
I personally LOVE Kirby Air Ride. City Trial is probably one of the most infinitely replayable game loops I think I've ever seen, and well over a decade since I first cracked open my copy, I can confidently say it's one of my favorite games despite what might be seen as a title that only features incredibly basic game play mechanics.

It's always tied for best gamecube game with luigi's mansion for me. My brother and I played the crap out of kirby air ride as kids, it's such a fun multiplayer game

I played both Kirby Air Ride and Mario Kart Double Dash as a kid and I still love both games. I don't see much overlap in practice beyond surface level similarities.

Another awesome video Logan! This game is so much fun, my best memory is being able to get off your air ride in city trial, for me that was amazing, The game itself feels like if you’re playing Kirby GCN! and you could be King Dedede & Meta knight for the first time in a console(iirc)! But in my opinion, it’s a hidden gem and a must play, This game deserves a remaster on the switch, Especially City Trial.

City trial online with multiple cities was a dream of mine since I first played the game as a kid. Definitely one of my favorite games, the checklist/goal structure is lovely. If Nintendo doesn’t make a new one we gotta just make an expansion mod, dolphin already has netplay and 4k graphics.
