Yes, that would be the world's greatest fraud/scam. Have you went to google maps and measured the distances to other countries? There is really no time and distance savings at all, ships leaving Chumphon will have to go around Vietnam instead and in the end there is no time saved at all. Go to Google Maps and use the distance measuring function and check.

If Thailand manage to get China's help to build Kra canal, it can be termed as success in its decades old effort to build the project. Congratulation goes to Thailand.

Thailand must go ahead with the Kra Isthmus Canal Project. This will be the Greatest Project of the 21st Century and will make the Thai people proud and outstanding. Or if it does not go through as what the Ancient Rulers wishes, Thailand will face the Wrath of its Karmic Retribution.

@@paparockjbstyle2 The shipping traffic might decline slightly but won't be totally zero. But like I said you need to look at the overall income of SG. Maybe a loss of couple percent in overall income which could be made up from growth from other sectors. Infact any bypass will help to ease the traffic in the Melaka straits which could be bottle neck during peak times.

Imagine Thailand controlling all the shipping trade from the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea and northwards to Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and eastwards towards the Phillipines, Indonesia etc if the Kra Channel is built. It will Boom and Prosper overnight if they only collect toll equivalent to half the price required for ships to travel the extra distance thru the Straits of Malacca or South China Sea.
@danielc2701
@danielc2701 Ай бұрын
.... so half the price of.... zero? lol. Transit through the Straits is free, it's berthing in port that they charge rental. So free transit vs paying for a canal trip, which one is more expensive?

It makes sense to build the canal and save on transportation costs. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands control the Indian Ocean on the East so they will exert control over this new canal as well.

The inland canal is said to handle ships of up-to 5,000 ton so international ocean container shipping is unlikely to be badly affected except for local intra-regional trade. ASEAN economy is likely to be anchored by Indonesia, hence the current major ports within ASEAN will continue to play a role, albeit the general progress may not be that fantastic.

If Thailand proceed to do it, Malaysia will get to enjoy the economics pie too . By upgrade the ports in Kota Bharu & Kuantan. Container from the West coast Malaysia will be shipped on board the Express Train (ECRL) from port Klang to Kota Bharu or Kuantan ports on the east coast of Malaysia. Where ships will load them to be on the way to SCSeas.

My condolences to those roped into investing in this project. A good sized container ship will need to carry about 5,000 TEUs to be a viable business. The largest carries about 25,000 TEU. Say the small ship unloads 50% of their cargo here before going on to other ports. That will mean 2500 containers. Say half is destined for transhipment to the other side of the Isthmus. Say only 2 ships unload here a day. that means about 2500 containers to be unloaded, transported, and then uploaded to another vessel there. How many 100-carriage long trains will it need just to transport these. What is the total costs per container of this transfer? Unsound business proposition.

@@zemry-mh4sq Here is more education for you. Go to google maps and measure the distance from Chumphon to other destinations. You'll find that there is no distance saved at all. The "time saved" by the Kra canal is a fraud, mainly because Vietnam is in the middle of any direct route so ships using the Kra will still have to make a big detour around it. Singapore is out of the way, yes but because it is, it is a straight trip to places like Manila or Shanghai.

Malaysia should be involved in the canal plan. Win win situation for both country. Cos Malaysia will be affected in future. Malaysia in the end possibility will be seperated from the main land (whole continent).

This canal will have to impose a toll, as there are savings going through this canal. In peace time, much can be said and all the smart jokers will have plenty to calculate. But when India, Philippines, US starts causing problems, there are no alternative routes. Even if there are 25% of all shipments going through this canal, it would be self financing and shorter time needed. Furthermore, there are congestion at Singapore port.

The solution ? Since Singapore is purportedly to suffer most from the piercing of the Thailand Kra Canal, It seems to me that it would only be normal that Singapore associates with Thailand to support the cost of the project and then to establish the Kra Canal as a paying canal like the Panama or the Suez canal, the proceed of which and the cost of maintining the canal to be divided equitably between Singapore and Thailand.
@danielc2701
@danielc2701 Ай бұрын
Singapore is smarter than that, the canal is a sure loss project, it's a fraud sold to the Thais. No, this is not dick waving nationalism talking. Go to Google Maps, then use the distance measuring tool and measure a sea route to Shanghai or Manila from Chumphon, Thailand (the exit point of the canal) and from Singapore to Shanghai or Manila or Taiwan. You'll find that there is really no or very minimal distance saved. The problem is that Vietnam, the country, is sitting in the middle of any direct route out from the Kra canal, which means that any ship using it will still have to make a detour. The only TWO countries the canal can serve is Cambodia and Vietnam.
