After 72 years on the water, including power, sail, commercial, charter, and private vessels ; including body recovery I am still learning. The best advice came from Captain Howard Clark after I want overboard (12 yrs Old) wearing sunglasses, shorts and cap. After pulling me aboard he said "The worst thing would be to tell your Mother what happened today. You would never fish again. But you need to remember; the sea does not love you and will demand payment when you can least expect or afford it." I hope someone will remember and heed those words from August 1950. I will never forget!! Captain OG

I'm glad you are both okay!! I have a 12' pelican sit on top kayak with a 2.5hp motor. I bought my boat made her my own vessel. Before my 1st freshwater adventure, i promised my boat would ALWAYS be equipped with my radio, sleep bag, tent, ditch bag to survive for a week or more. Flares, lighters, matches, other fire starting tricks, compass, clothes. Your pfd, boat, paddle and lights are your life. Even a small 10 minute kayak trip to practice, in the ocean can turn in a second!! God bless be safe.

Excellent training video on kayak safety. I have been kayaking in the ocean for about 3 years and we alway are prepared with all the safety equiptment. Always take with you a marine radio and a GPS including a set of flares for signaling. In one of my kayaking trips to berberia cay in Santa Isabel, PR we have to fight again swells from 6 to 8 feet. Thanks to te training we receive on sea kayaking we return safely to the main Island. Sea kayaking training is vital before you atempt to do so.

Watching those two undertake their paddle scared the crap out of me. I kayak at maybe an intermediate level and just yesterday went upside down in the Potomac. I shudder to think how easy it is to make those type of mistakes when you don't realize what's at stake.

The real tragedy is that there are this kind of people and that in turn they have children, which results in overpopulation of the land with imbeciles. In reality, it's not about committing mistakes because they have no experience. They make mistakes because they are simply stupid and ignorant. Over a certain age you should have the ability to understand the instinctual danger. How did this happen? Simple! An entire generation raised without being exposed to the slightest form of stress!
