Thank you for this wonderful channel and resource! It has helped us tremendously! We really like the lattice method (or stair method) for division. We only can figure it out with the divisor is one-digit though. Do you know if it is possible to do the lattice division for multi digit divisors? We would love a video on that!
@LetsDoMath2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ellie, I'm glad my channel is helping. When there is a single digit divisor, my go-to is short division, and I've done a bunch of videos on that. To me, long division (as you see in this video) is for those times when you have a divisor greater than 12 because we learn our tables from 2-12, so recalling those multiplication facts is not too hard and we can solve the division questions we ask as we go along using our tables knowledge. When we have greater divisors than that, that's when we use this method. And 3.7 IS greater, because we treat it like 37. Kind of cool to be able to just pick the method that's easiest to use to solve a particular problem, rather than only have a single approach and be stuck with that all the time.

Hi! How come your first operation was to check how many times the first two dividends fit into the diviser? Why not only one number, or the whole product instead?
@LetsDoMath3 ай бұрын
I’m sure you’ve realized after you hit post. We are dividing by 3.7, which becomes 37 when we scale it up. It’s a waste of time to ask how many 37s in 5, but ‘how many 37s in 54?’ Now we’re making sense. That’s why I went straight to the first 2 digits. 😉🤗

You need to get it so that you are dividing by a whole number. However many places you move that point in the number you are dividing by, you move the point in the number you have to divide up (the number inside the ‘division house’).

@LetsDoMath2 жыл бұрын
Have you done short division first? In Canada, and It seems to be USA too, it looks like when people think of division, it is coupled with the word ‘long’. This leads to the crazy scenario where anytime anyone does a division problem, they are using long division! There is more than one strategy out there! Long division requires many steps. So many steps that if it is introduced as THE way it is done, frankly it can put kids off math pretty much for ever. Long division is detrimental to elementary student mental health. Short division is the way I teach division to first timers (grade 3 in Canada), and they quickly get it. If you haven’t done division this way before (you don’t do ANY subtraction in your calculating steps and there is no ‘bringing down’ the next figure) I’m going to say it will really benefit you to learn this strategy. If you look on my website letsdomath.ca you will find all my videos on division. It’s easier than wading through KZbin tbh. On the Home Screen use the signpost for Resources, scroll down to Division. It’s all there for you. First do short division and a bunch of problems with a divisor of 2 to 12 (I hope you know those tables), then when you’ve really got what’s happening… then do long division. When you really understand what’s going on with division, then long division makes sense. I feel like right now for you, long division is a crazy involved strategy that just links as a set of many steps. Possibly they even taught you an acronym or rhyme to help you remember them. Actually what you need is understanding, not an acronym. I hope this new thinking helps you. I know if you take the time with short div, it will save you a ton of time, and in any math involving division from here on out you will whizz through problems like never before if you are dividing by 2-12. And It’s going to put you on the right path so you can understand long division too. 😉🤗

@LetsDoMath Жыл бұрын
Great question, but you can trust the method I'm showing you here. Scaling up both divisor and dividend keeps everything in check. Go with the flow, calculate as you see me do here and you'll be golden. And if you're still not confident, after you've solved like this, punch it into your calculator and see it come out exactly the same. Then you'll know for sure and confidence will be super high!

I just did a check to see if I understood the concept and when I did 12.19 divided by 6.3 my answer was like 50 dijets. :( could you help me?
@LetsDoMath Жыл бұрын
Hiya! So you can see from the values that you are going to get an answer of more than 1 and less than 2, because 2x6.3=12.6 So you know you’re going to have a decimal. The trick is to decide a reasonable level of accuracy. That should be indicated in the question. It might say show your answer correct to 3 decimal places. This tells you how to you ROUND your answer. 12.19 divided by 6.3 = 1.93492063. Right away we can discount the 2063 part. Our answer is either going to stay as 1.934, or it’s going to round up to 1.935. If you remember your rounding rules, you know that we look to the figure immediately to the right of or 4 in 1.934. That figure is a 9. “5 or more…raise the score”. Round up to 1.935 Expressing the answer like this has it correct to 3 d.p. If it says show your answer correct to 3 significant figures, then your answer would be 1.93. If it said 4 significant figures it would be 1.934. Do you see how that works? So never mind the massive string of decimals. That level of accuracy is notional anyway - just follow the problem’s requirements. And if there are t any, you decide what’s reasonable. To me, in this case I’d probably just go with 2 decimal places and call it a day. I hope that helps you. 😃🤗

@teresasdrawingchannel718 wonderful! The main thing with learning any new bit of math thinking or process is to come at it with a mindset of ‘I can get this, it doesn’t matter if it takes me a few goes’. Don’t give up, get in there and try. Once you engage with it, I believe you’re always going to meet with some level of success, and that’s your starting point to build from. Getting your hands dirty is always the way to go - we learn by watching, doing alongside, then doing for ourselves. You GO, Teresa! 🤗😃🥰

Can I suggest rewatching, trying to really follow along, and when you think you’ve got it, go again, and this time hit pause and predict the next step. When you’ve got that, I’d like you to take notes - actually work through one on paper. I use coloured pencils to help me identify separate steps in my math, that might help you see the steps too. Plus it lets me jump to a particular note set in my notebook because My brain connects quickly to colour, much more so than scanning page after page in ink of a single colour, or worse, plain pencil. I dislike pencil for notes because it can wear away over time. 🤔😳

These questions come up at the start and are usually 2 marks so if we are working mark a minute that’s gonna take ages
@LetsDoMath28 күн бұрын
You only put in the work you have to for 2mark questions. I doubt you will get a problem that needs a lot of problem solving as you go through each step to get to the answer. Are they examining your multiplication of 2 digit numbers or is it your ability to divide by 2 digit numbers. It’ll be more about process than fiddly multiplication or repeated addition. Likely examples: divide by 13, 15, 22 or 25. In other words values for which you can readily calculate multiples. They will likely avoid dividing by 19 or 27 or 43. If you think about calculating multiples of those, I think you can see what I mean. I admit when I use that little multiples set, that might be more of a ‘me’ thing for completeness, for the kind of problems I used to be given as a student in class. But for a 1 or 2 mark exam question, I also would move it as fast as I possibly could.
