Tom , I think you should turn the other trough around because when baby calf’s eat their growing horns will get stuck or one of the big highland cows will get head stuck.

Lovely to see the Highlands. The calves have done well. We wean all our calves by putting them in the next pen! No roaring, no stress, all goes smoothly. Don't know if it would work with Highlands but it certainly works with other beef breeds. Cattle become more placid when you walk amongst them regularly and scratch their tails and backs.

Hi Tom, I've been wondering why your Dad is so keen on the Highland. I think its the eyebrows!! The Highlands and your Dad are well into bushy brows! Thanks for all the fantastic vids and info, soaking it all up. Hope you don't mind all the questions, how else am I to get into livestock farming:) All the best.

Watch some vlogs from Swedish Homestead. Simeon has a herd of Highlands, and they are very tame and come when he calls them. One of his is called Sally and her antics have made her very well known. The vlogs are in English.

No worries Tom about not getting the drone footage. It was nice to see the 2 mothers and their calves up close and we got to see a small amount of them getting moved. I think the best way to make the calves friendly would be to hand feed them treats, so that they get used to you touching an being close to them. Best of luck when you have to wean the calves away from the mothers with those long horns.

Great video Tom. I'm no cow expert, never been around highlands. But my old boss when we got new heifers in. He would lock them up like you did, and hand feed them grain. He always rattled then bucket or feed bag, and talked to them. Go to the point if the cows ever got out all we usually had to do was hollar and rattle a bag or bucket and they'd come running. I bet if you hand fed them bread every day they'd he your best friend.
@TomPembertonFarmLife7 жыл бұрын
kory league the older ones you can fee with bread but can't get up to them to scratch them. Some of my milkers follow you around the yard for a scratch hahah

Good afternoon Tom !!!! Another great vid, would the highlands ween the calves themselves if given time ? It would be great if you could do a herding tip video as my dexters are impossible to herd anywhere and it usually involves a chase around the field ending up in failure then bridging them with nuts !!

Tom Pemberton Farm Life Here in the ‘Low Countries’ (Netherlands) in quite a few parks/forests highlanders walk free (as do (human) visitors) horns and all (referring to the highlanders again;-) and no problems at all. As long as people don’t go chasing them of course Nice to see how gently you handle these friendly ‘monsters’.
