I'm confused about the battery compatibility between the 2 models. It sounds like you say they are interchangeable but then say they aren't. I have the Gen5 Outsize and love it (although too expensive - no vacuum should cost that much), but it's too heavy for me after a while. My boyfriend is fine with it though. I got that size due to have 3 large dogs that shed (1 sheds heavily all year) and felt we needed the extra bin size and our house is 3000 sf (not including a finished basement), so the extra battery was kind of a game changer since I often vacuum the whole house the same day. So now the battery life lasts longer than the life of my arm muscles! I was thinking of even splurging for the regular Gen5 Detect to keep on one of the floors and help prevent arm fatigue/soreness. But again, this whole battery thing would be a game changer - IF the batteries of the Gen5 Outsize could also be used for the regular sized Gen5 Detect. If not, I doubt I'll spend the $$$ on another expensive vacuum knowing I'll just want to then shell out even more for an extra battery for that vacuum that won't come with an extra battery. IMO every Dyson should automatically come with an extra battery since you're already paying an arm and a leg for these things to begin with. Yes they are nice and I love it, but still WAYYYYY too expensive!!!!!

The outsize is so much faster when it comes to vacuuming the whole room with the larger head. We bought both, compared them and kept the outsized. It’s not like you are just holding the unit in the air 90% of the time so the extra weight is ok.

yeah, gen5 is already heavy and bulky. it collides when i vaccum and got scratches everywhere on the canister and cyclones

My first time buying a Dyson and I went for the Gen5 Outsize thinking the difference was only the extra battery and no idea about size or weight of vaccum. It is definitely heavy. I'm a guy and can feel my arms getting sore. I had purchased the unit for my retired mom who has an injury to her shoulder and seriously considering getting a second lighter unit or selling the outside
