Her video just came up on my feed yesterday, what a coincidence haha. I think there's an issue with consumerism in the community. Realistically there's only so many decks one would really work with, or even work for you at all. That number is going to be different for everyone obviously, but still there's so much emphasis on buying every new release and so little talk about actual work with whatever we already have. That's a bigger problem at large. So much of the tarot community is about buy buy buy rather than, yknow, read tarot.

Yes, the consumerism piece is a big part of it, as well as FOMO, which go hand in hand. I'm not against buying things, but I'm not a fan of mindless purchases, which is something that I don't want to get in the habit of. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

Once I let go of one deck, if snowballed to more. It felt much better with each cull and now my collection is all the decks I genuinely love and use! It's a wonderful healing and cathartic process 🤍🤍🤍

Ha! You uploaded 53 seconds ago! 😂 it’s like I stalk you.... 😬 I like how clear you are about the anxiety of too much choice. This is really a thing for most people. I think there is even a book called the Paradox of Choice. I do struggle with the size of my collection. But right now I just can’t let go of any!! They are like friends. ( maybe I need more real friends 😂)But actually releasing things does feel good. Oh the human paradox of me. I also like your criteria for keeping and letting decks go. Good questions. 🤔

I can SO relate to all of this Juli - and I'm a huge fan of Marie Kondo 😍 Too much physical stuff adds to mental clutter for me - the less stuff I have the happier I am. I have no qualms about letting decks go when I fall out of love with them - I usually put them out of sight for a month or so, and if I don't get the warm and fuzzy feelings when I pull them out again, goodbye! I feel like the more I let go, the clearer I become on what I actually want to bring into my life. I let go of a lot of decks last year, including out-of-print ones - but I'm also happy to have a couple of decks in my collection that I will probably never read with but bring me joy just looking through the artwork. Lots of love to you Juli 🥰🥰🥰 and good luck with re-homing your decks! Ps your make up looks gorgeous 💖

Aww thank you, Sarah! It's been fun playing with make-up during quarantine, LOL. Marie Kondo is the best, and YES, the physical clutter brings on a sense of mental clutter for me too. I also have exceptions of decks that I'll keep but likely not use, which I'm totally okay with. The big factor for me is the impulsive purchasing, LOL. Much love to you, dear friend! 💖

I find that my deck collection comfortably sits in a particular size range and once it gets past that number I start to feel the need to cull it down a bit...but it’s not so much overwhelm or consciously trying to maintain a certain number as just recognizing that there are decks I haven’t been reaching for and if I have too many more than my natural equilibrium point there will inevitably be ones that don’t see much use. With very few sentimental exceptions (like the old Robin Wood I learned to read with) I don’t feel any need whatsoever to hang on to a deck I don’t use (the fact that I almost never ask for decks as gifts probably helps with this). I am the kind of person who never adheres to any set weekly or monthly schedule in working with decks...I always just reach for whatever is calling to me for any particular reading, but as a result it becomes quickly apparent if there is a deck that isn’t getting used and needs to move along. I think where I maybe differ from a lot of people is that I never feel guilt about trying out a deck and giving it a new home if it doesn’t work for me. I like trying new decks, I’m grateful I have the means to buy something that catches my eye, and I’m glad that there is such a thriving secondhand market that it’s quite easy to find decks a new home if i want to. Of course most of the time there is some money lost in reselling a deck but other times there can be money made depending on rarity and OOP status (another thing I don’t have any guilt about because on balance probably a bit more is lost-but I consider that part of the expense of my tarot hobby and I bear in mind that my original purchase supported an artist/creator). So it’s a pretty steady and balanced in/out flow of decks in my household and I do like it that way. 😊 In fact I’m about to do another declutter video because there are some decks on the not-being-used list that can make space for some things I backed on Kickstarter recently. 😆

I love and appreciate your novella! 😆🥰Sounds like you have a good system and mindset going that provide a nice balance. You bring up a great point that trying out new decks is such a wonderful part of deck collecting. It's so true! I just really need to work on *mindless* deck purchases and FOMO. Not sure why I feel so guilty when a deck sits on my shelf gettin' no love, but thank goodness I'm able to gift/sell decks to friends and others who'll use them. It's gratifying to know they're going to good homes. I plan on playing around more with a looser system of working with decks (i.e., reaching for whatever calls to me). 💕🌹

This was awesome, so glad I'm not the only one with these struggles! 🙂 I know what you mean about that romantic notion of only have the five most perfect decks! I think about that sometimes too and then I look around and think, but I looove this one too and this one and this one... Hehe. I am still working on pairing down to my collection, very slowly and intentionally. I don't know if there is a magic number for me, but what I've concluded is that I'm happy with the number of decks I can fit on my bookshelf (which is quite a lot actually!) Once I start getting overflow, that's when the anxiety kicks in. But I'm right there with ya, it s constant consideration, especially as I fell off the depth year wagon a bit and bought some more decks. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your insights, I love some of the ways you approach you culling and am going to give them a try myself! ❤️

Yes, exactly--so many decks to appreciate and at the same time, it can feel like a lot. I don't have a particular number that I try to maintain, and I enjoy having options for switching up the decks I use--just not too many options! We can do this! 😂Thanks for stopping by 💕

I def struggle with culling any deck gifted to me, even if I know I won't use it part of me that feels so guilty about it! I relate to this video a lot lol. Love that burst of dopamine when buying, hate how fleeting it is lol. My rule of thumb for most things I tend to pile up (like yarn and books) is "have I used this/even thought about this in a year?" And if I haven't clearly it isn't-that- important to me lol.
@Peekaboorose

Loved this video; thank you for sharing honestly! I can so relate to how you feel. I was very much the same way until last summer when the great deck-culling started happening for me because I too was feeling overwhelmed by choices (and I also get more overwhelmed the more choices I have!), and I haven't looked back since! I don't let myself feel guilty for not loving or connecting with a deck anymore, especially when I know it's going to a place where it will be loved. Another strategy I employ now is if I want a deck, I make myself wait at least a few days before purchasing it (3 days minimum, but sometimes up to a week, if it's really expensive). Usually by day 3, I don't actually want it anymore. If I still want it after waiting a whole week, I really want it and I'm getting it. Also, even if it's a hot commodity, usually it'll still be there 3 days later or a week later (there are, of course, exceptions like with OOP decks, but this rule works pretty well otherwise). I also do something similar that Lisa from Supportive Tarot does with her anti-hauls: I look at whether there is a deck in my collection that is similar that I love already, because if so, I'm not going to be using the new deck after the honeymoon wears off. I also haven't backed any Kickstarters recently. I think a lot of the immediate purchase impulse is because of FOMO, but there will always be leftover decks after Kickstarter campaigns, and there are always people who don't resonate with their decks looking to sell them. Also with Kickstarters, I find that by the time the deck does make its way into my hands, my tastes have changed. I have re-homed all of my Kickstarter-backed decks -- although there were some that were with me a good while!
@Peekaboorose
@Peekaboorose 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the strategy of waiting before buying a deck has saved me from some purchases, and that's the type of *mindful* consumption that I need to practice more! That and Lisa's anti-haul method, for sure. Because I do feel like I'm getting to the point where I already have "scratch that itch" decks that would more than make up for the new decks that come out. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and tips, Tina! Hope you're well and safe 🌹💕

More and more lately I find myself looking at my deck collection with critical eyes and trying to determine which decks I want to let go. There is a small pile forming...lol. I have to admit I gasped 😱 when you pulled out the Oracle of Echoes, but only because it is one of my favorites. 😉 It just highlights that we all resonate with different decks for different reasons. Thanks for sharing this part of your journey! It's nice to know how you approach this. 😊 Sending lots of love! ❤

I am the same about having a romantisized vision of myself as this human with 5 decks and that's alllll I need. I'm like that with everything. I want a "signature" perfume and tarot deck and this and that but in reality I want/need more than that but then I get overwhelmed. It's exhausting. What is the magic number? 😫
@Peekaboorose
@Peekaboorose 3 жыл бұрын
SAME. But in the end, I just know I'll never be that human 😂😂 I've come to find that for me there isn't a magic number, but more a magic *feeling*--like a sweet spot of total joy and peace with my collection rather than any hint of burden. 💜

I /love/ your makeup!!!!! I've reversed my decisions on selling decks many times too hahaha and oh well. Those questions (esp the coffee one) is so smart!! But that EMOTIONAL draw sometimes is still there and it's still difficult even though logically I know. Ok I need to focus on the decks you're selling now hahaahah (EDIT: ok I'm safe from any of your decks haha).

Ah man, the struggle is real! Me, I started the very slow process of pulling out a deck and using it for a week or two, and then decide if it’s a keeper or not. If I can’t decide, I pull out my pendulum, and that has helped.

I feel you on having that spark when you first get a deck. After a month or so, it fizzles out! The everyday Tarot was one of the very first tarot decks I got, and after having it and buying other decks, I don’t gravitate to it at all and I haven’t given it a new home yet. Good luck to giving all of these decks a new home. The Halloween Tarot is one of my favorites, and that Halloween bag is so cute! Is that a Peggy bag??

Hii. I've been collecting decks for almost a decade, & I find that I like having a collection of 40- 50 decks. My husband, pets, & I are a small military family, so I want them to fit them in the container that I put them in for when we move. I take longer to move decks on (& a little longer purchasing them) because I have some that I use different times of the years, sometimes it's a slower process of loving the deck, etc. There are some that I've had for years & worked with them for a long period of time but don't use it or grew out of them. I still want them (most of the time) because they're special to me. I also feel like I disrespected my deck in a way if I just let them go unless I know that it's going to a good home. Sending love~✨

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! I think my collection also hovers around the same number as yours. I'll have to count! And I totally understand feelings of disrespecting a deck--I think that's why I feel so guilty in letting decks go unused. So it's wonderful to be able to rehome them to people who'll give them attention! Sending love right back. Hope you are well and safe and having a relaxing weekend 💕☀️
