I've painted my deck a few times. Word of advice, don't skip out on primer. It adds an extra layer of protection to your wood and ensures good adhesion of the paint.

Hi, I am in the process of painting my deck uncovered porch. I am wondering if you know, should I use Kilz Primer underneath the paint? I did use it on the rails and the front but not sure if I should use on the floor part. I may have done the whole thing wrong LOL

It does look beautiful… but 4 years later trying to strip it wasn’t easy i actually had to use a grinder . Will go with oil base this time

If the old paint was sticking that well that you had to use a grinder, you should have left it on.

I love the color ! I am in the process of re-staining my balcony, 25% of stain is shipped, do I have to remove all the old stain to bare wood or is it enough to sand it with 80 grid and apply two coats stain & seal? I see you did not sand off the old paint, did that cause an issues. ? Thank you
@skeeterhandyman95724 жыл бұрын
It would be best to get it all off but not always necessary depending on type of paint or stain used. For example if you were using the exact same stain the you do not need to get every little bit off. Or, if covering with a thicker and perhaps darker stain it would likely turn out ok as well without sanding it all off.

So you painted over some of the old paint after power washing and didn’t have a problem?
@skeeterhandyman95722 жыл бұрын
Most of old paint was gone after cleaning and washing. The issue I learned later was that it really should have been power sanded first but my old deck boards were also too far gone so it only lasted a couple of years and now it looks bad again

I would wait longer if it’s pressure treated…however from my experience I would not use paint at all. Only use a water sealer such as Thompsons

Sadly it only lasted a few years. I suspect wood was too old to repaint and only course of action now is to put new boards on as they are about 22yrs old now

It on lasted 2 years. I would not recommend a paint like this. In all fairness my wood was already 15+ yrs old to begin with. I would only stain or waterproof wood but never paint again. My best bet now is to just replace all the floor boards as they are over 17 years old.

I used the Canadian Tire paint... NEVER AGAIN! I did everything painstaking correct and it came off in a few years and now I have to start the process all over. It's worth spending the extra dollars on a better paint.
@skeeterhandyman95729 ай бұрын
I agree, it didn’t last for me either. Painting wood is just generally a bad idea even if it is a paint /stain combo. Only use a stain such as Thompson’s water sealer, etc
@oceano_drive2414 жыл бұрын
Why not sand it?
@thehound13594 жыл бұрын
Seriously. You should always give it a good sand before applying a stain. That’s my experience anyway.
@sergiobass1980Ай бұрын
I will advise not to stain your deck with a solid colour. You will have to touch it up yearly. I would just let it be or use a clear stain. It will last longer and it is easier to maintain. Learn from my mistakes. 😢

You don't need to seal or prime? I heard paint isn't a sealer, and even the paint itself can rot the wood. I also heard primer helps with keeping the paint from chipping or fading. I also heard paint-primer-sealant all-in-one products are crap.
@skeeterhandyman95722 жыл бұрын
It was supposed to all in one and nothing else required. Since you deck boards were already old it did not adhere that well. After 2 years it needed to redone again but I never did it as I really just need new deck boards. And yes most all in one products seem to fall short of their claims

the follow up video after 3 years says all you need to know. Total waste of money. Paint badly flaked after 3 years and looks worse that what he started this video with. There are only 2 options: a) sand back to bare wood and treat as from new with a dedicated "deck" paint so you get a blotch free finish. Or better yet, a stain that soaks into the wood, not just a layer of paint that can do nothing but chip/flake off given the wear it will incur since it will be walked on! or b) hide everything by using a much darker colour

One coat always looks like shit. If you did 2 maybe in a couple of years it would still look fresh.
