Can we fix this flaking and peeling hardwood timber deck??
In this video we have a 41 square metre Merbau deck which the client has been maintaining themselves, however due to not sanding the deck back properly and layers of varnish building up the deck has now started to peel and flake...
We will be giving it a hard sand back, going over the deck twice with THE BIG MACHINE starting on 40grit and moving on to 60grit. It is important to not use a high grit otherwise the deck will become too smooth and slippery.
We then go around the edges with our trusty American Sanders Edger, a quick coffee break of course, and then we are onto hand scraping the corners. After this we use the orbital sander to smooth any rough spots and give the deck a quick vacuum to prepare for oiling.
Two coats of Woca Exterior Wood Oil gets applied, leaving it overnight to dry in between coats. And the deck is as good as new leaving behind a protective penetrating oil which looks amazing too!

what about between the boards? Should this have been sanded too so that it color matches the top?

I'd say it's not much of a concern so long as the color is close enough. No traffic touches those inside portions so not as much to worry about. But if you're going for a dramatic color change you'd probably need to use a chemical stripper instead of the large sander if you want to strip between the boards. Even then it would be kind of tricky.

What are the benefits of using the Woca decking oil over oil based penetrating decking oils? I have a deck restoration business in Perth WA, and typically use Cutek and Equisol. Cheers Ian

Hey Ian, so Woca is an oiled based penetrating oil the same as Cutek - the difference is the solvent that flashes off is water to leave the oil behind. What does it mean: water-based oil? Is it an oil or water?

It is actually a seed based oil but the big difference is that the solvent that flashes off is water 👌🏻

Thanks Clint, But we are trying to repeal the water. My understanding is water solvent gives less odor. What product provide the best long-lasting protection if we can tolerate odor? What about Cabot or other oil based products, which one gives the best quality and Longevity?

With some products the flaking will happen within a few years even if you DO sand properly. Behr for example. Avoid at all costs.

Why 60 grit on big machine but 50 grit on the orbital?

@@briceanderson3281 no, that’s the bad part of having a lumber deck and a solid stain. Stain is the same as paint but actually worse because it’s harder to get off
