In Barker's original short story, the Candyman isn't even black (in fact, he's described as having 'waxy yellow' flesh with a 'hint of rouge on his jaundiced cheeks'). The story is also set in and around a fictional English council-estate compound called 'Butt's Court' in the late 1970s. The alternate American setting and racial themes were incorporated into the film, at least in part, as a means of addressing the racially-charged violence and societal unrest occurring in the U.S. at the time.

Hey Decker! I freaking love this movie because it's a story about the power of stories. I always considered Candyman and Helen (at the end) to be a tulpa. In the story, Candyman is a tragic tale of a talented young man that had all of this pain and suffering put upon him before being killed. The power of further pain and injustices suffered by the black community as a whole is focused through the telling of the story through generations and takes the form of Candyman. He may have been a real person in the past, but I think that he is just energy in the Candyman's form because that is what the people believed he was. And at the end, Helen killed him (it) by allowing the people to see her defeat him and giving her life to save the child, therefore destroying the communities belief in him and creating belief in Helen's tragic story. That is why she comes back at the end. The energy from the story is not destroyed, but has now taken the form of Helen. This is just my take though. Thank you for the entertainment, Good Sir. Cheers!

It worked incridibly with the birdview images of the empty streets of the city and the movies carries quite a lot social commentary, from how the academic world treats the plight of the poor (especially non-white poor) to class and housing. The confusing thing for me was the "multiple people can say 'Candyman' into a mirror to summon him if it's a multiple of five" concept. So, is it like a dentist recommendation, where four out of five morons don't get murdered? Does Candyman have a built-in data structure that lets him keep track of every fifth utterance of his name in chronological order? Is it mirror-specific? Is it tied to that particular building site? Does Candyman have a selection process?

Coldcrashpictures did a video reviewing why Candyman works so well as a horror movie, for anyone reading this comment or even Decker Shado, I recommend it for more background on the movie.

20:08 - 20:13 Helen: "I still stand by the fact that I'm not crazy, and that I'm being stalked by a murderous urban legend trying to frame me, but I WILL cut a b-ch that chooses *pink* as a wall color!"

Tony Todd has such an amazing voice! I hope you've had a chance to see Horror Noire. Mr. Todd was really great in that documentary!
Great review! It's also good to know there are other people out there who still remember Redwall!

I remember seeing this when I was 12 in the theater in chicago. I loved it and will always remember walking home alone just before midnight after seeing this and being shook all the way home

Eddie Murphy was considered for the title role, but was deemed too short at 5'9". They chose Tony Todd for his height at 6'5". Tony Todd's favorite role and movie of his own The titular character of Candyman does not appear in person until 44 minutes into the movie. In Eli Roth's History of Horror: Slashers Part 1 (2018), Tony Todd said he was stung by bees 26 times during the space of the Candyman trilogy. Penned by Clive Barker who also wrote Hellraiser, another iconic horror franchise. For the scene in which bees fill Candyman's chest cavity, bees were placed in a special body appliance which was filled off stage and strapped to Tony Todd's chest. Utmost care was taken to be gentle in placing the bees properly for the scene and then collecting them afterwards. The only slasher movie in the horror canon with a Black serial killer as the villain. This has never been done before or since in the history of film, though, as of 2019, a Candyman reboot is in the works. Candyman combines elements of two real urban legends: Bloody Mary (a ghost who appears by chanting her name in a mirror) and the Hook (a killer with a hook for a hand who attacks a couple in a parked car).

I’m not normally one of those people that request something all the time, but one thing I highly suggest is Scream. I rewatched it recently, and it was better than I remembered tbh

At that restaurant conversation about Candyman the guy’s voice could be a discount Charles Dance, would of been cool if it was him too right from Alien 3 lol

"They found her friend dead in the living room. Man, that name has never been more ironic." That's how it got the name living room. It used to be normal to have wakes at one's home in the parlor. There was a bit of a social campaign to not do that, and they started saying that the parlor was a room for the living. Thus it changed it's name to the living room.
