Making a chief is not an overnight event. Gaining wisdom and experience is accomplished over time. This ceremony is a celebration of a person having spent half (more or less) a lifetime learning a trade and becoming a master of it. To suggest this is a training exercise is ludicrous in the extreme. There is a hidden purpose and in keeping with my having been a chief for fifty years, I will allow it to remain so.

This was my year, 14SEP2012. It was CPO class 119 or FY13. I’ll never forget that day. This weekend is our 130th birthday. Happy Birthday goats 🎂 🐐 💪🫡

The CPO is the best tradition of the naval services, as a former officer I can't count the times I turned to my CPO saying 'what would you do, Chief?' Inevitably he had the answer and probably solved the problem several times before for other officers. When the Captain doubted what I was doing, just saying I check it out with the chief, well OK, carry on.

A very happy moment indeed for all who put on that anchor. I was once there after having earned the anchor in Rota Spain 1984. The best fraternity to be a part of, where you can depend on your fellow Chiefs anytime and anywhere. Congratulation to all. The initiation is not a requirement. Be within standards, CO promotion endorsement and leadership academy which is mostly some fat chief reading off a PowerPoint. Don't be fooled by the so called u have to do this. If they say that to u or discriminate u in any way, go to legal, do an IG. As long as the chiefs mess is using a federal institution, they cannot prevent u from meetings, etc. Heck, the association needs permission from the base CO to operate and.... not part nor endorsed by the Navy anyways. Know your rights and exercise them. And u will get pinned when u get paid... unless u get frocked before that, only the CO can retain frocking and if he does, what was the reason? If u met the standard, they cannot prevent frocking. Get legal involved, you will win. Once you are pinned as a chief, never ever be part of a DRB, not part of the legal system nor required... sometimes those idiots in a DRB cause more harm than anything. If u ever in a DRB, ask for a lawyer and keep your mouth shut, chances are, command has nothing on u. Stay in the DRB until 1630 and walk out at 1631, only the CO can secure your regular liberty, but ask the senior person first if he or she is securing your liberty. Unless they have a letter from the CO, they can't cause it isn't punitive.

Having retired in 1982 I only recently found out that the C.P.O. Initiation had been eliminated and I was very disappointed. To me it was a traditional passage to the rank of E-7. Now having watched the series "the making of a chief", let me convey my compliments. I was, again, proud of the way the chief's stepped up and created an initiation that was meaningful, professional, and just plain awesome!! Excellent and well done series. I was onboard Nimitz circa. 1980 while in the IO and during Operation Eagle Claw. I was an HM2 during that time. One of my proudest adventures while onboard Nimitz. Later got out, went into the Naval Reserves while earning my RN degree (Associates in Applied Science). Re-entered the Navy in 1990 as a WO1, under a special program the Navy had for prior HM's, who had earned a 2 year RN degree. Military was gearing up for Desert Storm. Retired in 1995 as CWO3...I would do it all over again...

We need to respect the issues and traditions of our fellow services. I have known and called my friend Sergeant Majors of both the Army and Marines, they were really outstandingly good people, likewise the Sergeant First Class in the Army. I think the distinct uniform of the Naval CPOs that looks like the Commissioned Officer uniform gives them a little more respect and authority. I am also biased towards the promotional system of the Naval Services as it standardizes the training and experience that each grade must possess and with servicewide exams gives all a level playing field for promotion.

A friend of mine son became a chief a few years ago. He has spent most of his time on aircraft carriers. He said one hard thing about becoming an E7 CPO is the fact he had to start bunking with other E7s instead of his E5 and E6 buddies. But the respect from both enlisted and officers are worth it.

Most are politicians polishing a knob or running the PT program knowing prpmotion to Tech Sergeant will happen soon. The Guard promoted hard workers and leaders.

Navy brat here. My dad was an AOC, joined in 42, did 31 years. I recall going aboard carriers, or on base, and those chiefs had their own deal. Seems the enlisted men and officers alike had a respect for them. Looks like that's still the case.

When the Lord Created Chief Petty Officers When the Lord was creating Chief Petty Officer, he was in his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said " your doing a lot of fiddling around with this one." And the Lord said "Have you read the specs on this order?" " A Chief Petty Officer has to be able to work 12-24 hours per day, through any type of weather, on any ship or boat, know the laws of the sea, be able to load and unload hundreds of tons of cargo after being up all night, and then try to get some sleep in an area that is accessible to and is used by all crew. He has to live in his shop, if need be, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for days on end, offer advice and counseling and still meet time schedules, maintain an even and controlled composure when all around him have gone mad. And he has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands." The angel shook her head slowly and said "Six pairs of hands...No way." "The hands are not causing me the problem," said the Lord, "It's the three pairs of eyes a Chief Petty Officer has to have." "That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. The Lord nodded and said, "One pair that sees the herd of whales or a boat in peril, another pair that can see the blind spots that dolphins and young sailors love to hide in, and another pair in front that can look reassuringly at the young bleeding sailor, who is injured, by saying "You'll be okay" when he knows it isn't so." Tries to get 8 hours of rest, when he can, and raises a family of law respecting citizens while seldom ever going home... And still keeps a good sense of humor. This Chief Petty Officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with port calls in areas created from scenes painted in hell, comfort the injured, their family and friends, and then read in the daily paper how the military is no more than baby killers with guns and have no respect for others." Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek fo the Chief Petty Officer. "There's a leak," she proclaimed. "I told you that you were trying to put to much into this model." "That's not a leak," Said the Lord, "It's a tear." "It's for bottled up emotions, fallen comrades, for commitment to that piece of cloth called the Flag, for justice and for the families without fathers." "You're a genius," said the angel. The Lord looking somber said "I didn't put it there."

Poor guys don’t even know when they’ve been played. Most are proficient in their jobs but excel in brown nosing. It’s pathetic to see a grown man kiss ass but if they don’t then they won’t be recommended for advancement. Brown nosing is the biggest problem in the navy. Honor courage and commitment are supposed to be the core values of a sailor. How’s a brown noser going to be honorable? How courageous are the brown noser’s you know? However they are definitely committed to brown nosing by the time they make chief. I wouldn’t say this stuff except people don’t know. People shouldn’t point to people as examples when they know they’re brown nosers. Is that really what the world needs more of? Too bad they’re unable to secure employment in a occupation that doesn’t require such demeaning behavior

I'm currently in the army and have been for 11 years, as an infantryman. Been to iraq and Afghanistan. seen the worst of the worst and done the worst of the worst. I'm not putting other branches down but Damn I couldn't imagine being anything then a grunt. The navy would be boring to me. However like I said I know we need everybody. I am pretty sure the U.S.N stands for United States Navy but I guess it's a new military and they are changing things.

As you said, you are in the Army so of course you wouldn’t know anything about the US Navy. The USN and the gold fouled anchor has long been the symbol for Chiefs and stood for Unity Service & Navigation, know your role and stay in your place.
