Winter is over, so it's time to put blankets away. Somehow, extras have collected, and now they don't all fit in my blanket storage container! Once upon a time, I would have looked for more storage, but now I know to let the Container Concept help me make tough decluttering decisions.

Sometimes we keep sentimental things from a previous era of our lives with the hope that we would use them... And then we're in a different era and realize we're never going back to that previous era. Tell yourself IT'S OKAY TO GET RID OF SENTIMENTAL STUFF. I recently got rid of a quilt my grandmother made me that was for a little girl. Well, that was probably 4 decades ago, my daughter didn't use it, and now I have 3 grandsons. I gave myself permission to donate it without looking back! So freeing!

I wash and store all my winter blankets between the mattress and box spring of each bed. Then when winter comes I just pull them out, throw them in the wash for a refresh and each bed has its respective winter blankets. I had to do this because I have no closet space for extra blankets. But I love your "contain"(er) concept, it's helped me de-clutter so much of my craft items.

That's a wonderful idea, thanks! We heat with wood and it can get quite chilly in the winter, so each of the kids has a fat wool blanket, and those things are HUGE. I don't think all three would even fit in my blanket box, so I keep them in the basement during the other 8 months of the year and hope that they won't get damaged. But if I keep them in the same spot, just one layer down, that's perfect! Lightbulb moment!

As an FYI- take the handmade quilt out of the plastic- the plastic doesn't allow the material to "breathe" & therefor the fibers will deteriorate faster. You can place it in a pillowcase, or other fabric casing for storage.

A suggestion is for each bedroom closet shelf to hold the winter bedding for that room. This helps with the decision of what to purge. I started keeping the sheets and towels for our children in their room on a shelf, in our small home finding the right place to store the necessities has been a learning process but is making life more organized.

This week I moved my linens from a cabinet to a drawer and in the process did some purging. I had five (FIVE!!) sets of queen sheets we didn't need. We've only been married three years, HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?! But they're nice, solid sheets so I hope someone is thrilled to find them at Goodwill. :)

I had 8 dog beds in my large house due to having several dogs. Now only have one and he likes to lay on the floor so I got rid of 6 beds. I washed all of them and took to the dog pound, with every extra blanket I could find. I didn’t feel bad about getting rid of them because I had a good place to donate too. They appreciated them a lot.

Thank You! So simple but profound. Tackled our large tote and 2 small containers of computer and related cords. Successfully got the usable/needed wall boxes, cables and cords down to one small, clear & well labeled box with an additional small bag relocated to my husband's workshop since they go with items down there. The remainder was tossed. Baby step but I feel empowered to tackle the next container and contents. Debbie

I appreciate how you articulate the challenges of decluttering for “the rest of us.” I think the Container Method is especially appropriate for our American houses that are plenty large for our essentials, some fun stuff, and basically we can be living our best lives without spending more money on organizing solutions! I also appreciate that even though it’s less drastic than minimalism, there is still an incredible mental shift that occurs with the acceptance of containers. Thanks also for sharing that not every decision will be easy and modeling that we will survive, lol!

I have had to put up my family in the winter when their power went out. I have also lived through several of my own power outages in the winter that lasted for days. And of course I have to keep blankets in the car in case I get stuck for hours in a snow storm. No matter how hard I try, I just can not part with blankets. I hope this does not offend you, but just in case someone is like me, I have some storage ideas that might get you through. One is I roll up blankets and put them in pillow shams to place around the house, in my tornado shelter closet, or in my car. Also, blankets can be laid between mattresses and box springs. I love all I am learning from you.

I totally get this. I had enough blankets to save the life of several families in a blizzard though. When I went to clean out, my mom took the rejects🤦🏼‍♀️ She lived through a blizzard as a newlywed with no power and not much food. I do think it is important to keep an excess of blankets on hand. As we saw even Texas can get deadly cold.

Normally when I declutter I would throw away what needed to be thrown etc and then whatever was left I would put it in and when something didn't fit I'd think oh no, now it's all messy again and continue to shove the extra few things inside and shove the lid on and then wonder why I don't feel joy using the box and get all frustrated. You've changed my reality. Thank you. Can't wait to use this.

I love folding! Please let me come help you fold blankets lol!! I am learning so much and having so much fun watching you!! I raised four children who have now left the nest. We had so many blankets from all those years!!!! I realized what a ridiculous amount I had kept when my last daughter and I went thru the house and pulled out every single blanket from every crevice in our home. we piled them all up on the living room floor and I was shocked that we had so many!!! And they were all very nice blankets which made it even harder to sort. However, I was so tired of them taking up so much space and they weren't actually being used. They have just piled up all over. We gave 28 blankets to a local homeless shelter. I felt good about giving nice things away and blessing others. Homeless shelters need lots of blankets! Please give as they are put to very good use! And I don't even miss one of those blankets like I thought I would. And we made a family pact: NO MORE BLANKETS FOR GIFTS!

I decluttered and organized my blanket collection today. So many blankets. We're just two old people and will never use all these blankets. But they are so hard to get rid of. My husband buys really nice throw blankets form Eddie Bauer so we have about 10 and he doesn't want to get rid of any of them (or anything else in the house for that matter). I asked him to organize the blankets in the top of the linen closet so he could feel some of the organization and inventory pain. We got rid of two items. All that work and only two items!

This single, simple concept REALLY changed a space for me recently- (try not to laugh too hard, it's dopey)- I always reuse plastic grocery bags. We use them as trash bags all the time, and for other things besides as they come up. So, as a result, I had this one double cabinet simply STUFFED with plastic grocery bags. Other things lived in there, and I always put bags within bags, but it was always a disaster and frankly, just ridiculous. But I NEED lots of bags, folks! Somewhere along the way I got a rather large, clear plastic bag (clothing I ordered online, maybe?). I stuffed all the plastic grocery bags I could fit into there and the rest had to go, the end. For months now, I have one BIG bag of bags that is easily accessed or moved if needs be to grab something, plenty of grocery bags for trash and whatever, and NO MORE GIANT MESS. So, my container concept win' is especially my bag-of-bags. It took me realizing I could only have what fit in the big, clear bag and no more, and that was more than enough. Thanks, Dana!

I used to have bags of bags too. I would stuff BIG bags full. Because I need them. For all those things I use them for. But they were always overflowing from the floor of my pantry and taking up space in the spare room and in the basement and in the office. I mean, really...It truly was ridiculous! So I rearranged a wire roll cart where we keep cat food so that the middle shelf was empty. Now I stuff bags in that section. I have a few more in my donation box. And a few near the litter pans. To get me through the initial guilt of letting go of bags, I did a little crafty. I tied 100 of them onto a big hula hoop and made a wreath to hang outside. Seriously. Who needs 100+ plastic bags??? Nobody. Now let's talk about those plastic department store hangers...😂

I've just discovered your KZbin Videos. When I was about age 54 my 16 year old son told me that he'd determined that he is ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). He began to read off all the telltale signs, and it was like a lightbulb lit up over my head as I realized that my procrastination, my distractedness, my struggle to get places on time, and my inability to keep my house tidy are all because of this brain condition/type that I unknowingly had. I've just watched you and your friend Janet declutter her kitchen dumping spot, and it makes me wonder if you and she are also ADD!

I’m 39 and was diagnosed with ADHD last year. It’s a roller coaster for sure. We of course have to be very careful with suggesting others have this diagnosis. Also, not everyone wants a diagnosis nor feels it’s helpful. It’s helping me a heap, and it’s even helping my mother understand my sisters better too! She now gets that we aren’t willingly lazy nor uncaring when we forget things. However I will say a big part of adhd is learning the strategies to manage our symptoms & learn the skills others already have. Dana is doing a wonderful thing for many of us who just didn’t know better- like her example with the 1-in-1-out rule. I will say as women we historically were waaaay under diagnosed, hence the seeming boom in women my age or older getting a diagnosis. For anyone else out there reading this, this doesn’t mean I developed adhd as an adult. It’s a retrospective type thing. The psychiatrist spoke to my mother, my husband (who has known me well since I was 18), talked about my behaviour at school in depth and verified this with my mother and some school reports. And of course they interviewed and assessed me. So it’s not an easy out as people seem to think, but it’s an amazing thing to have insight and know I’m not morally deficient.

I recently dropped off another 3 warm blankets at my local SPCA (animal shelter), they absolutely love them! And about a week ago I sold the blankets I had as covers for an old lounge suite that I also recently sold! Also I got rid of all the extra duvet set, pillowcases, and random flat sheets that were just sitting in a bag in the garage taking up space. I still have a spare blanket, and a couple of pillows and sleeping bags for when my son and best friend stay over occasionally, as well as a quilted underlay and sheet for our inflatable mattress, Our winter bed covers and couch snugglies, but we use those. It feels good! Everything is so much more organized, everyone can clearly see what's what and where it goes. But wait, there's more! I sold an old single bed, dissected and recycled our new fridge box that the kids had had a lot of fun with, AND I DECLUTTERED AND REORGANIZED MY ENTIRE GARAGE!!! Took me a couple of weekends, but oh my LORD, it looks amazing! It's my happy place now lol and I go in there for a few minutes every day micro-organizing everything because I can, and it. Is. Sooooo. Nice! A place for everything and everything in it's place! The final frontier is doing a dump run of a wee pile of broken things, which will be done as soon as we get the funds, which is only a week or so away!

I call this the concept of self-limiting spaces, and I use it all over my house -- my t-shirt drawer, my cookbook shelf, the silverware tray, the dishtowel drawer...I think it's the most effective tool in my toolbox. It's always an eye opener when I finally have ALL of something clean...and it won't all fit! I have faith that one of these days, after I have explained this concept to my husband for the umpteenth time, the lightbulb will click on and he will get it. Hope springs eternal.

Glad you powered thru it with a result that made you happy!! If I kept everything that I had the space for though...I would not be a minimalist and the inventory in our house would drive me to tears. Bc of the extra upkeep and bc I like..less stuff. But that's Me! It's only ironic bc all of the questions that you asked ( Is it stained, ripped, still fuzzy, worn...)those (are) the exact questions that I personally ask of myself when decluttering in order to downsize the home inventory. P.S. If you fold Kon Mari style, you can fit a lot more into the container so maybe it's good you dislike folding (( smiles ))

Id have to dump crap out somewhere to free 1 up. I so look forward to freeing up so much space, in my home in general, and in the many tubs, I am using to hold on to stuff "I will sort, someday."

Why are you not folding the Maria Kondo way. It makes it more compact and neater? I saw her a year ago and have used her folding method for 2 years now. My drawers for clothes , sheets and blankets are in great shape. Now your concept is helping me declutter the house.

Oh my gosh, I have way more blankets than you. I know I need to declutter but I’ve had a hard time deciding which ones are going. Also, I bought a throw from Costco a couple of months ago and knew I didn’t need it but I liked it. I ended up taking it back. I already have blankets I don’t need, I can’t believe I bought another one😬. Thanks for the video. I will revisit my blankets today and purge a few.

I was looking at that electric blanket thinking how much i wanted one of those and yep no room in my container and why do I think I need it? Sometimes i try to make the decision before i bring it home vs decluttering later. This battle for an electric blanket has gone on for several years and this year which was a colder wetter winter and it didn't occur to me about the electric blanket until you pulled it out of the blanket chest and i started to laugh at self and realize i do not need an electric blanket LOL Thanks for sharing. This is journey of self discovery about ourselves as well and decluttering.

PLEASE READ: I saw the beautiful quilt your aunt or great aunt made. Please take it out of the plastic bag thing you have it in. Store it in a cotton pillowcase or acid free tissue/box. Plastic hold moisture and will damage the quilt.

I wish I could have suggested this BEFORE this video. Dollar Tree has their version of Space bags. I love those things and guess what, it doesn't matter how you fold by the time all the air is sucked out. I have gotten them for my linens and those precious crocheted items, made by my mother and grandmother. It has freed up so much space! Well, maybe next time. You did a great job!🙂👍

Woman...you are changing my life right now!!!! My house, hence my life, is a solid 8 out of 10 on the cringeworthy scale at the moment. With only one child, a man-child, four pets, myself and my crafts(yes, they are an entity in and of themselves 🤦🏻‍♀️) my home should be easy breezy. Not so much. I am horribly sentimental and on top of having ADHD, my son is identical and therefore impossible to declutter around. Thankfully now though we can both begin to learn and use your Container Concept to help us make decisions and finally get our home from looking like an episode of hoarders (not really but it feels that way to my ADHD brain) to an actual peaceful, calming place! Now, to find an accountability partner! Again, thanks for what you do and being down to earth and nonjudgmental. You rock!

I recently did this with our blankets! They have to fit our blanket ladder and blanket basket or else it goes... Did not thrive, but did pretty well with it! It’s tough when it crosses over to sentimental (looking to the past) or has a future purpose (for our future kids).. but trying to stay in the present and stick to your container concept!

Ooh, you just provided a handle for handling my blankets! I have an etagere that is for comforters/blankets. But then I put other things on it too, so less room. Easy fix for that, and I "am allowed" to get rid of things I don't use even if sentimental. It's a process, but realizing it's a journey is helping.

I am LOVING your videos!! You’re explaining things in a way that’s clicking in my brain in a way that no one else has been able to do! And I hope you understand what I mean by this- I love that your home isn’t all white and perfectly spotless! You have a lovely home, but it looks like a cozy home, not a museum where you’re afraid to touch anything. It’s hard to watch other organizing/cleaning YT channels because I know that my house (at least in the foreseeable future) will never look pristine and it’s hard to take advice from someone whose idea of clean is perfection. Thank you so much for these! I can actually see my countertop this morning because while I was doing dishes I took 10 minutes to employ the container concept and just focused on making it better. This seems sustainable!

A very easy way to fold is to match up the corners so that it lays flat. If you gather corners caddy corner, it will not lay flat. Once you have a flat surface fold into either a square ( which is how I was taught to fold as a child) or in thirds. Folding say, a towel or a washcloth, into thirds makes it higher in a container but the look of thirds makes it more easily grabbable, it looks neater on a shelf if, of course, you put the folded edge forward. Also, towels folded in thirds once corners meet up, always start with the corners, they look lovely on a towel rod. Give it a whirl, if you wish, and just think...then you can call yourself a FOLDER of things that are container-worthy. I think it is a perk that you make it more usable as well. ( sometimes you can even MORE in the container) certainly vs not folding at all. Happy folding... Marie Kondo has even more elaborate folding styles that might click for you, it this does not zing-- mind-blown for you.

If you could take time to learn and fold well, you could fit some more stuff in the containers. It is amazing how much one can fit in a container by putting them in a neat and geometrical way.
