Absolutely, food storage companies for preppers tend to be very boom or bust and then the stuff sits around for long periods of time (sometimes *years*) at the individual's home. If there actually is an emergency (which could be anything from a natural disaster to a job layoff) it's a really bad time to try to change your eating habits, when you're already under stress. Do you really want to grind wheat in an emergency where you have no power or try to take crystallized honey out of a 50 pound container? Do you think your toddler will eat it if they've never had it before? How will you rehydrate those expensive dehydrated gourmet meals if there is no running water and you're dependent on lining up daily for bottled water? No. Buy the things your family will eat, one or 2 extra packages at a time, when they're on sale and use them on a first in, first out basis. For me, that looked like bottled water, tea bags, tins of tuna, dry pasta, instant oatmeal, canned tomatoes, etc. It did come in handy during a tight patch financially and I ate up the surplus over a period of about 6 months. Don't forget to keep a manual can opener with your pantry stash! Those cans aren't going to help you if all you have is an electric can opener and no power!

@@liisaking1247Yes, well said. I live in Germany and our goverment actually has brochures about what you should have in your house in case of an emerceny, and it's not even that complicated or outragous. If anything really goes wrong for longer than two month or so things are getting bad anyway and even prepper tend to forget that you need a new food and water supply at some point. And a steady one at that. Same with clothes and other things.

Moving excess unused and unwanted stuff from the house to the garage is not the answer. All of that excess should be sold or donated or it will suddenly find its way back . Just like when she said it‘s was a phone- charger and to put it in the garage. I wanted to hug her and say that the decision meant it really was not a necessary item. She is doing a great job and I look forward to her living a life with less need to keep stuff in which she will feel so much lighter. Dang, she is such a lovely joyful person, she will only get more so. As someone who holds on because of sentimental reasons, I do understand how difficult it is to toss things away. I keep a few cans of those emergency foods, but they're not just for emergencies. I use them in between trips to the grocery store, and some daily, and rotate them regularly. When the pandemic hit, I didn't have to run to the store for anything, even toilet paper, since I had an adequate back-up supply. My grown son, on the other hand, couldn't find toilet paper and was low on dog food, and it was nice to be able to share some to hold him over till things calmed down a bit. The odds of a total societal collaps is not very likely. Also have to be careful with some of the prepper channels. Some are paranoid and downright nutty. I find that the best "preppers" are the homesteaders who constantantly use and rotate their food. 😀

I’m seeing that a common thread with all the videos I watch on decluttering is inadequate, cheap storage solutions! One proper, purpose built L-shaped office desk with storage would be so much more functional than 3-4 random repurposed pieces that aren’t designed to serve the way they’re being used! Same with the short mismatched shelves that could be replaced by one well thought out ikea unit! And where did that second printer come from? 🤨 We will know if the elliptical gets used because there will be massive holes in the dry wall! 😂 You’re a saint lol

@@pamelawantsmusic Yes i see what you mean. But generally people who clutter have had those items for years and they may not have bought much new. Or they may have spent so much that they are in deep debt and buying more new compounds the problem. Also, sonetimes what looks like junk to us is something that has sentimental value like a deceased grandma's dresser etc. More than anything though, it's a symptom of underlying emotional issues, trauma etc. So it is very difficult to get people who have been holding onto stuff for years to throw it all out and get new.

As you keep working there will be more areas that are decluttered and are designated homes for specific items. My guess is that when you start peeling the second layer of the onion, would be a perfect time to 'take it there now'.

Dana has helped me as well, and I think you’re right, based on my onion experience 😂. We first have to have our designated spaces, this was my experience, now she can SEE what she has , not needing to purchase more and can put away clutter as it accumulates. I needed to impose purchasing guidelines too for myself, not wanting to undo what I’ve accomplished, and I have to keep up on this decluttering yearly. Because of the layers. It’s easier now than when I started.

I recommend your sister watch “A Hoarder’s Heart” here on KZbin. She has excellent tips. There are levels of hoarding disorder and while your sister is a neat and clean person, the blocked doors is a level 4, but since she asked for help the second the doors were blocked suggests perhaps a level 2 or 3. This makes it truly harder to make these decisions than for most people seeking to declutter, and she has done so impressively well! You both should be so proud.

You guys inspire me. Every time I watch a video I want to get up and make my home a bit better. But then I think, "Wow, how do they keep at it for hours? I'm drained and tired of decision making after even a few minutes!". I tell myself five minutes at a time hopefully adds up. Thank you for sharing your journey ❤

Love the sister videos! 🎉 If I can make a suggestion to try… I had a similar issue to Sis in that I had so much Overstock I would get overwhelmed so I stored bits of it in other places. I HIGHLY recommend keeping it all together-like the printer paper-no matter how much there is because that way it doesn’t get lost in a sea of the garage stuff and it helped retrain my brain what “enough” looks like. If you constantly see it, you know you don’t need more. I feel like Sis and I might have that in common-“out of sight out of mind, buy more”. She’s making great progress and I love when you have new videos for us !🎉🎉

Hi Carla! I think you should sell some of your sisters decluttered stuff and use the money to buy shelves and totes for the "office". That is a huge room and she could use that room for all her work stuff and store all the wigs, supplements aso, things she is reviews on in there. I think she would fell much calmer and relaxed if she got all that stuff out of the closet, bedroom aso and collected in one space where everything got their own home. In that way she would have a distinct area for work (including work out) and the rest of the house as just home. If she has a big propper sturdy shelf system she can have all that and a big prepper pantry in that room and still have plenty of space for an office area and the home gym items. A lot of random shelves and mixed furniture only makes it more look cluttered and don´t optimize the space. I would put hiiigh shelves all along the long wall and on the wall where the TV is accept for one spot where I might hang the TV on the wall next to the door and have a lower shelf for exercise stuff. In that way she could exercise in the middle and watch TV at the same time. I would turn the desk so that she sits sideways with her back to the new shelves and not sit with the door behind her back. on the back of her desk I would put a shelf high enough to cover the back of the computer screens and keep all the office supplies in that. The shelf would then be back to back with the desk and help with the eco in the rom and at the same time give a feeling of a room in the room. The items in that shelf is easy axess by just going around the desk. In the nook where all the pantry items are now I would put a nice comfy chair and a smal table, to give her a place to take small breaks in and not be disturbed. The rest of that wall I would leave without stuff, not every wall needs to be filled up. Try to persuade her to get rid of all those mixed items and do a propper reboot of the room.

I agree with the tall shelves. It makes a huge difference in a space compared to having lots of short ones, taking up all along the wall. But we didn’t want to buy anything new at this point but that might be an eventuality.

I keep a very well stocked pantry, probably six months worth. But I only stock what I use on a regular basis and put new things in the back. That way nothing expires and I throw away nothing. I really hope Sherry can get to that. FIFO (first in first out). Can you tell I'm a retired hospital dietitian?

Maybe if Sherry had a 30 task list for her home. Assignments to do before you return. She could take before & After shots that could be inset in the video. Just an idea but this could help you to get breaks in between trips to her house.

I am SO cheering both of you on!!! LOVE the idea of zones within a room and that prepper pantry is actually really nice. It is a safety & comfort, but one can see there is enough food there for a long time. So it is safety within a reasonable boundary AND it looks great!!! Win! And I LOVE how you are as sisters. I have sister admiration/teensy bit of envy ❤️🎉 AND today you all inspired me to pull out my clothes and have a look thru. I think I am ready to let go of some things. So thank you for the inspiration too! (& as someone who has PT to do, I set up a tiny home gym area and I am using it almost now and I LOVE it - so hoping yours also brings you joy!! I've tried to also encourage my sister because she has a ton of stuff, rebuys stuff that is misplaced or forgotten about and is always running behind. I just remember that anyone, if they decide to declutter, has to do it at their own pace. Letting go is never easy but once you find your rhythm it becomes much easier.

I'm helping my friend...once a week for at least 5-6 months. (I've lost count.) I want to say, "Oh my gosh - donate this!" But I have to respect that this is HER house, HER stuff, her money, her memories. So easy to get rid of other people's stuff/clutter. Not so easy with our own. We've got to want the space more than the stuff.

Carla, I suggest you start to get a _game plan_ started for what will _finally_ be done in the garage. Once the house is all done, you _WILL_ have to takle the garage again. I know you will be trying to _reduce_ the items as much as possible, but once that is done there will still be a mass of items that needs to be organized so that things can be found. There seems to be a number of items for each member of the family. I think first of all there _should be zones_ where each family member has their things and nothing is put in that zone for a different person. And it should be labeled. _Zone #1 could be your sister’s zone_ and so on and so forth. Of course, there will be group/family items like lawn mowers, washing machines etc in their own group zone. And also if small items go into a box where it can’t really be seen, it _needs to have a label on the box_ , on the outside of the box, so that you know what’s inside the box as much as possible. Everything needs _a neatly written legible label_ !!
@potatoflakes247
@potatoflakes247 3 ай бұрын
Love the zone idea! 🎉 I want to try that at my place. Thanks😊
@Pammellam
@Pammellam 3 ай бұрын
@@potatoflakes247 Yes, with a _ZONE_ for each person, people can be made _responsible_ for their own zone. They can put things in their zone and they can take things out of their zone with ease. The _size_ of a zone can show who has the most stuff and who possibly needs to do a little more decluttering. But also, I think _labeling_ is absolutely essential. Most things are not put out on the shelf so that you can actually see them. They are often in _boxes or bags_ . So it is absolutely _essential that there is some kind of labeling system_ on each item for easy recovery and easy recognition. Also a _date_ when added to the zone might be nice as well.

Hey ladies, I want to start off by saying I'm super impressed that you're still plugging away at getting the house in order. This is a very big job! I find the work you're doing inspiring. I do want to say one critical thing but I mean it in a helpful way. I know you are eager to get things out of the house and that's why a lot of stuff is being sent to the garage, but I think this is a huge mistake. I think that the stuff should either live in the room where it will be used or it should go bye-bye. So for example the extra ream of paper needs to live in the office even if there are seven other reams there! Printer paper is used in the office with the printer and if there is just no space to put the additional ream then you donate it. Who is going to remember that that ream of paper is out in the garage somewhere when they finally work their way through the other seven reams?! The phone charger to someone else's phone needs to go live in the room where that person lives. It doesn't need to go in the bag for the garage. I was so encouraged to see the progress you guys made in the garage back in the beginning and now I'm afraid to think of what it looks like now. For all of the items that are extra like extra silverware, it might be helpful to look at how much of that one item you have and then that might motivate her to decide which sets of cutlery to save and which to let go of. No one needs to store extra silverware in the garage. For items that she purchased and intended to use like exercise equipment or appliances, it might be helpful to store them in the room where she intends to use them and put a post-it note with a date on them so that she has a guideline as to a sort of expiration date. If she hasn't used that item by that date, it's time to donate it. As far as the perceived value of some of these items, I know it can be painful to think of just donating brand new stuff just because it's extra because you know the money you spent on it. But sometimes it takes the pain of giving away valuable items to learn the valuable lesson of not over buying anymore. I hope these suggestions help and I will be here watching and cheering you on the whole way!

I also wanted to say - people may disagree with prepping - but there is a woman whose husband lost his job during 2008 and since their home was paid off and she had a large pantry - they lived off her pantry for over a year. And their savings paid utilities. That really impressed me! My Dad was in a car accident growing up, luckily Mom worked but her co-workers donated time off when things were at their worst. So she/we were lucky. But prepping is not so unwise as most think. In many countries, social services step in …but the US is not set up that way, not yo the extent other countries are, and so it is wise to have a plan in case of accident, injury, ill health, loss of job…. not just a disaster etc… but this is my view 🤷🏼‍♀️😊 So I LOVE that little prepper pantry! 💪🏻🎉

Check out Dana K. White’s books and KZbin channel. Her two decluttering questions are great. If you didn’t even realize you had something, I think that’s a clear sign that you can get rid of it. Dawn from The Minimal Mom says that if you haven’t even seen the item in months or years and you didn’t know you had it, then it’s already time tested and shows you don’t really need it.

I do the tedious random clutter baskets and drawers while watching something or listening. I’ve had piles of them stacked in the living room, while watching Jane Austen. I’ll tackle one at a time. When I was at this point I’ve often had an encouraging list that is conveniently located, it has a list of the boxes and drawers ( examples: sewing, crafting) then I mark through the completed tasks. It’s so discouraging sometimes that I need reminders that I am accomplishing something. I believe it’s because it’s “hidden” clutter vs. the clearly visible stacks. The visual reward isn’t as evident, so that’s when I go to the stress reward (when I need something I’ll be able to find it easily)The other reward I lean on sometimes is space, having more space for the things I value more. As ALWAYS !!!😊I really enjoyed watching y’all.

One more reason to go with Factor: their boxes are perfect sizes for donation. They're big enough to hold stuff but not too heavy when they're full. They also come with that odd packing material that works well to cushion breakables. Win--win plus good food.
