I think that the best approach to decluttering (and I know this sounds morbid) but I asked myself “if I die tomorrow, how much of this will my son or husband use?” I asked them, they said with great certainty, “none of it.” And then I realized that I would leave them with a burden, while dealing with loss. It made my decision to let go and live with the necessities and only the things I love and realistically use. I am out if debt, and live much happier and healthier 😊 I can die happy knowing that I will not leave any burdens to any of my loved ones.

That's so caring and poignant I think, not morbid. Look into "Swedish death cleaning," which is decluttering guidance and then a life mindset that speaks to what you're doing. Good luck continuing to unload!

It makes sense to make this room into a dedicated office, can shut the door when the work day is done. Less stress in the bedroom if you don't have to look at work related stuff. Suggestion - The stand the printer is on, I'd move it to one of the corners near the desk. Would think it would be easier to hook it up and retrieve prints while working. The 2 drawers could be for office related items. Make the window wall the "work zone". Nicely done, it's going to be nice to have the room situated around.

I’m surprised your sister invited us back. 😂 Always a great video. Saying this gently, but it looks like you’re going backwards. Remember how you enjoyed the simplicity of the Airbnb. You won’t get there holding onto food, projects, etc for the future. Little stock piling is ok, but it’s just a waste of space, money, & peace of mind otherwise. Also think about the zoom effect from her view behind the desk. You want the setup behind her desk to be nice and neat. Maybe consider changing the placement of the desk to the other wall so it has a shorter distance (view) to the back wall. That way when the elliptical has to come into the room, her zoom background isn’t a view onto the elliptical.

I also have a lot of clutter and I legit haven’t bought anything except food and necessities for over a year. I feel like I kinda shuffle stuff around at this point but for the new year my goal is 15 min declutter sessions everyday switching rooms each week. I am amazed at how much stuff I throw away or send to donation each week. This summer it’s the basement/garage project. I too need to be separated from my junk in order to get rid of some of its

I would turn the desk sideways under the window - so her back will not be to the door. And a better backdrop is she's on a video call. Also in her bedroom - she could move the bed a foot or so closer to the window to give her more room by her closet

Hi Carla. I love the videos when you are working with Sherry. I do agree with you about too much furniture. We all know that with more surfaces there are more areas for stuff to accumulate. I know from first hand experience in my home office. I used to have not one but two desks, a drafting table, three ladder bookshelves with a ton of books and DVD's, two CD units mounted to the wall, a cabinet and a few totes with storage. Eventually I managed to get it down to one desk, a side table and the drawing table. I am not going back to having all those surfaces in my office.

My vote: no chair in the bedroom. Remember the Air BNB that your sister went to that started this journey? I think the new office has a much better window view! Consider the closet maid vertical modular (wire) shelving system for the office closet. This will maximize the food/other dedicated storage. But consider limiting any food that does not fit into the closet as a "boundary" or limiting factor to how much can be purchased. Best wishes! So much fun to see you two still at it!

Carla, next time you are with your sister, take the camera though the rooms that have been done already so we can get a sense of what it is like… now that those rooms are done and re-lived in, is the family and your sister happy with the new rooms. Can your sister find what she needs and wants to use in the new rooms with things all in slightly different places?? Does she find it easier to use the new rooms that have been Decluttered?? Your sister is so gentle and thoughtful. I know with all the food that she has tried to amass, that she is thinking about emergencies etc. and making sure that the family has things to eat but, are those things just sitting around not being used? Does she have a new plan to use some of the items before they go out of date, for example? It would be interesting to have an update for the garage, showing how the garage has evolved after the clean out. Is the car parked in the garage now? Or is that open space just an invitation for more things? Also regarding all the food your sister has saved and purchased, does she and the family have a plan for the revolving use of the food. ….and then re-supply later?

Little by little! Hopefully, Sherry will eventually realize that shuffling unused items from room to room is not actually organizing. Things need to leave if you want a noticeable difference. I like your garage purgatory idea. I've used that trick on my mom before, haha. Honestly, though, I just love seeing her incremental progress. You've both come a such a long way with this project, and even though it's slow (excruciatingly slow, lol) it's very REAL!
