I’m in my 70’s and tell my daughter that every bagful or boxful that leaves my house is a weight off my shoulders. It’s very freeing to know you won’t be leaving a mess behind you.

You know what Elin, I have gotten rid of more than 60% on my stuff and today I woke up in the best mood knowing I don't have to clean up anything or stuff-shuffle my things. I am starting to do art again (just for me), and I love it.

Absolutely decluttering has built my confidence. As I transitioned out of work due to chronic illness, my whole life was in turmoil. Going through my possessions caused me to reevaluate my priorities, needs, and my identity. The more I decluttered and embraced minimalism, the more clarity I developed. No matter your season in life, decluttering regularly (and minimalism esp) forces you to see who you are as a unique person and forces you to let go of the fantasy self stuff, the guilt and shame stuff, the anxiety producing stuff, the needless stuff, and keep ONLY those things that serve you in life to live your best you. ❤

Your comment resonates so much with me! You are so right. Especially letting go of the former childfree and fantasy self items! So freeing and makes me think about who I truly am and what my habits and tendencies are. Bonus, the house is so much easier to clean and maintain! My husband loves it!

This. It's not only the act of "I thought I couldn't do it but I decluttered this area anyway" that builds confidence, but the active examination of oneself, evaluating your priorities, what's important to you and what you want your life to look like.

Hi Elin, I just had to say thank you for all of your content. I am in my 50s and feeling at a bit of a loss in life. Watching your fantastic content has been really inspiring and uplifting and I thank you for giving me a boost that I needed. I live in London and January can feel very dark and gloomy - but I find your approach to life puts everything into perspective - starting with decluttering. I hope that by the autumn I can say I have made a lot of headway in decluttering various areas of my life and finding new pathways to follow, as opposed to the overwhelm and sometime lack of hope and excitement for the future I have been feeling. Thanks again.

Yes, decluttering is definitely confidence building!!! It's the sense of achievement and accomplishment that gives a fantastic boost plus the added benefit of the change of surroundings in your life! Win win. It's a dual benefit and it's always helped me to gain clarity and boost my mood etc. My mum taught me to shift the furniture around the rooms in your house for a change and new fresh look at life and decluttering is also beneficial like this. A change is as good as a holiday, the old saying goes and I think all these things come into play to help us out in life! 🎉😅👍

I think that part of the reason that we don't rush to fill the void is that we gain an appreciation for the space that is left behind. We've probably habituated to the clutter and the space is novel and interesting in it's own way.

Indeed, for me, clutter accumulation and procrastination go hand in hand. All my decluttering intentions have been hanging over me for a long time. So after tackling some of those, I feel braver to start on other things I was putting off.

My space is good. I’m a cozy minimalist who practices, what I call, gentle decluttering: when I open a drawer, cabinet, or closet, and see it needs some help, I take two (drawer) to maybe fifteen (closet) minutes to do a quick declutter. My best friend’s house, however, requires fortitude, patience and time to declutter. I’m planning on decluttering the food storage areas (pantry and three cupboards) over the next few days. Wish me luck. (To give you a comparison, my apartment has one food cabinet.)

Over the weekend, it got to be 2 degrees, so I was stuck in the house. I realized that I was just able to relax. I had no nagging feelings of guilt about all of the things I "should" be doing. I noticed that I looked less puffy - like I'd lost a couple of pounds. I think that constant nagging guilt/stress probably led to increased cortisol. That was definitely an unexpected benefit for me. Also, the cycle of when I want things out of the house has decreased. Within a day or two, I'm like - nope, that's not working. Out it goes. I used to say, "well, I'll hold onto it because maybe, possibly, someday it might work."

I have definitely become more confident in my decisions after a few years of decluttering. I recently had a major break through on sentimental and inherited clutter. I'm spending this weekend going through many rooms and have had significant breakthroughs that I just couldn't deal with in prior attempts. So so liberating! And I too will often declutter or reorganize a space in lieu of shopping and find it satisfying. Great video!

I stopped going into stores where I found myself impulse shopping and boredom shopping. Now, I only go to these stores if I need a specific thing or a few specific things, I get them and get out. Online shopping is still a work in progress. 😳

Decluttering is a continuous process, I have to go over the same space repeatedly. While at the same time, being mindful of what I am bringing into the house is extremely important as well. They have to go side by side, otherwise, I will fail. Now whenever I feel like shopping, I go grocery shopping instead. At least, I will always need food.

After decluttering most of the spaces in my apartment, I feel definitely much more relaxed and approach situations with a calmer mind, which is a very welcome change since I've been struggling with anxiety for the majority of my life. The better confidence in my case is a byproduct of this peace I feel, I think. Either way, it is definitely making me feel something I've barely ever felt. ❤

Some great nuggets of wisdom here! Letting go of stuff does bring so much freedom. Stuff tends to cause blocks in our life. If we imagine a river that is constantly having rocks, branches and waste being dragged along with the stream, at one point the water can not flow anymore. It's the same with our life. Love, energy and creativity for example can't flow so well, when there is an abundance of clutter. It's also so true, that decluttering builds confidence. I love how you tend to get a bit more philosophical with these topics. There is depth to your content ❤👍 Keep shining, Elin ⭐️✨️

In regard to your last point I totally agree with you. Decluttering does boost your confidence. Decluttering helps exercise your decision making skills and also when you are narrowing down your things and deciding what to keep and what to get rid of you’re deciding what’s useful and purposeful in your life which in turn can help you be more sure in who you really are which to me is a confidence booster.

Wow these decluttering points really hit home for me. It really pointed to how i have been feeling. I feel so confident after getting rid of unused stuff and really don't wanna shop when i have put so many hours into decluttering. I even go thru my home and rearrange when I feel the need to shop and that satisfaction of redoing an area in my home makes me so happy. Thank you for finally letting me feel seen in this journey.

I've been doing well identifying what needs to go after 35 years of maximalist living in a tiny apartment, but I get stuck in getting it out the door. I live on the 4th floor with no elevator, and I can't carry much. I get discouraged in the slow process, and discouraged by arthritis, and sad about giving up my fantasy self. But every bit that I accomplish does definitely improve the lightness in my living space. Elin you are a calm and supportive coach, and I thank you for being there to encourage me.

If you have the funds, call the super or porter to help you and tip them. 1-800-junk will also haul away furniture for a fee. If you can’t afford it, don’t be shy to ask your neighbor for help. It’s really not a big deal for me to help an elderly neighbor. One more elderly than myself. 😅

You are spot on with the confidence boost. Decluttering also brings a sense of calm, especially if clutter is a stress trigger. When your place is a mess, it gives you a sense that you can’t do anything, or at least anything right. It’s suffocating. Decluttering gives you, as you mentioned, a sense of accomplishment, and, after each session, breathing room.

Thanks for your video. I agree 100%.This has been a really nice surprice to me: I thought I did my changes on a practical level but it has been such an existential boost. I can almost feel it as a spiritual, fullfilling feeling and the self-realianse of acclompishing something that gives me a sence og control and mental health.

Decluttering and minimizing is different for everyone, but we all need it on some level. I've tried to help and encourage others with their declutter their "belongings." Some made progress, others literally were afraid to let things go. (Including years of worth of mail stacked on tables.)
