We have decluttered our mums old closet after nearly 7 year as in all the contents are gone, some was kept like books and some intact handbags and a brand new radio still in it's packaging. This was the very first time I experienced actually feeling physically ill from decision making fatigue. I was so exhausted physically and mentally and felt like fainting. Hoarding recovery is no joke. The closet itself got dismantled and I still feel sick as in not seeing a physical reminder and the space being transformed.

This is great and for motivation. I’ve been trying to organize my scrapbook items, cards and craft items. I also went through my clothes. It’s hard when dealing with chronic pain all the time to do that much. I just do some at time and family helps me. It be nice to find my bedroom again. Which I have pathway to closet just need some corners to do something with. I’m hoping by this winter lol. Keep up the great work 🙂

And abour the attic - in my mind i have a very specific mental map of my home and where my things are, and i basically just have 3 places where most of my stuff is, which really helps me to keep track of everything. Maybe that would be helpful for you too? Like moving everything from the attic to rhe basement to have most of your stuff in one space, it reallly redcued my stress

you know its okay if you churn because you own so many things you need the time and the rounds to go about them. I understand it isnt always fun, but you simply cannot remember every single thing you own and where you put it. So when you find something back you remember, you may even feel positively surprised, and you can put it to use if you still like it, like those pineapple garden lights! No need to feel bad for decisions from the past when you can deal with them in the now.

Looking great!!! I know that you have a lot of bins. I think you should favor clear ones over opaque ones (except for Christmas green & Fall decor orange, etc.), because I think that the opaque ones can lead to too much confusion, even with a label - like if you write “Sentimental” on the label, it could be sentimental My Little Ponies, or toys from when you were a small child, or from your teens, or college stuff, or your children’s items that touched you…. You’re really attached to your things and I think that clear totes would help you both stay organized, and remind you of all your nice things.

I am so proud of you Ms. Heart have been with you on your journey for a while. I see that you are starting to organize further; one thing that might help in the near future is zoning the basement. Have a corner for just memorabilia, another section for rotating clothes, and so on and so forth. keep the clothes and most common used bins towards the front, also helps with adhd in being able to finish a task if it is a quick win. Just some things to think about. You are doing great and I always look forward to Fridays decluttering videos with Ms Heart and Miss Pepper 🥰

It looks so good! I have no idea if this would add a lot of work when you are videoing, but I'm wondering if Dana K White's "Take it there now" principle would help you avoid re-creating piles of things that just didn't get put away when you are decluttering. I don't think you'd need to show us that you are doing it, but I do think it has helped a lot of people with ADHD get things put away in their long term homes.The basic idea is if you find something with an already established home, you take it right away to that place. You can scan the area you are working in to make sure there's nothing else that needs to go in the same direction to save trips. I use it a lot when I'm tiding things up. I still have stuff that doesn't have an established home to deal with, but it probably shrinks my piles by 50%.
@DeeDeeMcTree6 ай бұрын
Wow!! I bet you never thought you'd get to this point! a whole cleared out section and organised bins 😮 everyday you prove to people that you can change, you can get out of that mentality by just pushing a bit at a time. Yes it's not immediate and it might take years but because it's taken that long your slide backs are less and more fixable. Can't wait until you can get the whole basement like that and then you can go through the bins category by category. I'm here for it however long it takes!!

May I suggest that you find a central location for all. your seasonal and home decor? It makes no sense to have Christmas in a leaky basement and Hallowe'en in the attic. If you put ALL of the seasonal and home decor along just ONE WALL in the basement, you'll start to see the meta-category of home decor and ask yourself "how much is enough?" and "what's ACTUALLY important about the season, or holiday, or my home?" I'm sure you find it's JUST STUFF and what's important is the people around you, and your time which is precious and your health. Life is too short to be constantly churning a hoard. It's better spent baking cookies with your kids or watching a movie with hubby, or volunteering for your church. How many boxes of a particular type of decor is "enough"? Have you considered the boundary of the container(s) yet? So how much really IS 'enough' Christmas decorations? Hallowe'en? Do you really "need" all that stuff? Can you imagine your life on the other side of the unhoarding and declutter? Can you make room for the PEOPLE in your house and the activities they want to do in the house instead of the storage rooms they are now? Are your read for the Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning yet? Just some questions for you to mull over. P.S. I am a super fan and I watch your videos all the time. 💜

Where I live, people decorate a Christmas tree each year and maybe put up some lights. That is it! My home decor fits into one flat tub. It is actually possible to be happy without having to swap out pretty things every few weeks.

I wonder if, now that you have space, you could create a ‘drop zone’ near stairs for items coming down that need to be processed and a ‘tossy tossy’ zone for things that need to go up?
@bethstratton33916 ай бұрын
Ms Heart, you say the basement will be done when everything is in a bin, but I was wondering if you intend once that is finished to go back through each of the labeled bins with a fresh set of eyes to see if anything further can be removed from each bin or to scale back the amounts of bins in each category. Also, maybe you could try having a rule in place that you only put 4 rubber maid containers in each stack. That way, you are not tempted to keep adding more and more rubber maids and piling them excessively high or right up to the ceiling. This will enable you keep track of the amount of containers not to be tempted to hoard more in the future.

Do you use bags or boxes to collect the different kinds of things temporarily as you unpack a section? Like four boxes-trash, donate, move where it goes, and (let’s be realistic) I don’t know yet? I get so anxious when you just throw different kinds of things behind you, knowing you’re going to have to touch every one of them again and remember the category and how hard that would be for me 😂

@mariaperez-i9n6 ай бұрын
I know that is not the most popular opinion, but the decluttering is slow in part because of the untimely obsession to dispose of everything perfectly. At this moment, trashing things is a better option than "thanks giving page" and "garage sales" and even "recycling". The longer things stay in her house the probabilities of they getting mix with other things increase. Later, she can focused on being perfect, after various layers of trashing things. Remember, things do not have feelings and what is not trash to her is either trash, soon to be trash or worst, clutter in other people's homes.

Maybe even 10-15mins! He can go through one or two boxes depending on their size and decide what he wants to keep. I also think he needs his own shelving unit to store the things that are important to him.
