The original felt like a twisted love story, but this one feels like the girl just hinges slightly off from outright insanity. I love how her twistedness could be interpreted so differently although they retain similar themes.

I think "twisted" is a good way of putting it. I finally sat down and analyzed why I find this arrangement by Teddyloid so interesting, so bear with me for a sec, haha. The original version by DECO*27 features a song basically written in C# minor but begins with the superdominant vi chord moving to leading VII chord, and then landing to the tonic C#, before dancing around back between the V and vi chords. This erratic movement has a "twisted" personality to it, which I believe highlights the chaos of the persona of the character. The unstable base chords resolving to the minor tonic adds to that uneasiness as it shifts around, as if trying to find a stable base in the minor sound. Think of it like a weird mixing of "major" sounding tones in a minor scale. Teddyloid keeps this idea in the initial parts of the song, but opts to begin the song in the tonic (i) instead of the less stable (vi) like in the original. This choice has implications when we see what he does later in the song. He then moves down and up, mimicking the movement and unstable base-finding of the original. However, when he reaches 2:41, the chord progression takes an "Andalusian Cadence", which is basically a walk down from the tonic following the minor progression i-VII-VI-V. This is an awesome choice because the character finally takes a stable progression -- a downward spiral of sorts or a "descent into madness". He is able to do this because he establishes with the listener, early on, the base tonic and how it descends, but isn't quite ready to go all the way down, and instead just dances around the chords before returning to the tonic. In this portion, however, there's no going back once the tones start descending. This is made even more poignant with the major tones coinciding with grunge sound effects and the descending chromatic effects in 2:55. The overall effect is this confirmation that the persona has totally given in to her emotions/passions, perhaps at the expense of her own sanity. It's incredible. Thanks for attending my TED talk. If I could give you a potato, I would, hehe.
