When mentioned issues like widespread corruption, demographic changes, violence among civilians, does Sikkim barely pops up in anyone’s mind. However, the Himalayan Kingdom comes with its own baggage. While majestic mountains and picturesque lakes bring in revenue from millions of tourists, it also brings in problems that other states may never encounter.
When the Lohnak Lake burst in Sikkim, experts said that it was the shortest trailer of what could potentially unlock in Sikkim if things go bad and this happened despite asking the Centre for an early warning system to help the state. The state has also been raising very strong demands for implementing the Inner Line Permit on the lines of several other northeast states and leaders like Bhaichung Bhutia, have made ILP one of their main demands. In the past few years, the state has also witnessed incidents which was unimaginable. That is why in this week’s Decoded, will try to explain why this Sikkim election can be pivotal in the Himalayan Kingdom’s future.

We will never get a leader like Nar Bahadur Bhandari. He was a visionary who loved his homeland and was the one that laid out the road map of development in Sikkim. Pawan Chamling is a legend in his own right. He perfectly carried the torch that Bhandari passed him. Even though a lot of things were overlooked during the SDF years, for instance rise in drug abuse and suicide rates and lack of entrepreneurship opportunities,Sikkim still grew in the field of Tourism and Organic Farming. The visionary Chamling took Sikkim to the next level and ruled the state for 5 consecutive terms. Coming to the current SKM government, we had a lot of expectations but in their first term we figured out that SKM lacks purpose and vision. They just want to be in power and use any means to safeguard their greedy motives. SKM government is a Tik-Tok government. We want peace and stability and Inner Line Permit and I'm sure SKM can't deliver.

Sikkim can never go back to bhandari time, nor can it go back to chamling time. Times have changed so much within 5 years too much damage has been done by the current govt.. 5 star hotels & big malls have made its home in Sikkim. Recently MDH masala occupied the main location in gangtok, similarly mital did with West point and there are many other stories.. raise of violence, drugs etc is all time high.. I hope Sikkim once again go back to how it was, but it will be very difficult task at hand for future government.

During SDF's tenure, there was good discipline but under the leadership of PS Golay, the law and order has gone haywire. I guess the choice is clear..this time around. People who own private sectors benefit from ONLY AND ONLY tourism..but sadly this present govt is focusing only on appeasing the govt employees & some businessmen.. tourism sector is gonna be hit so bad if this sort of violence is not curbed.. lets bring Chamling back to power & restore peace in Sikkim once again.

Only 20000 Rs gave to people who lost their families...but that money was not from Central funds ..that money was collected from Sikkimese people as a donation individually...90% people gave donation...😢😢

It’s not a surprise to hear such news coming from the editor in chief who spent most of his life in Delhi and out of Sikkim. Agree its like political strategy for votes. Last few months hundreds and thousands of rush jobs . Everyone is put into schools, hospitals. Sikkimese case Is different .it was a Himalayan kingdom and merged out of force hence there were claws that were made to protect the identity and culture of Sikkim. Article 371F protects us Sikkimese from loosing our rights that was politically snatched in 1975. So please donot make such suggestions without knowing its origin.
