I love The Naked Archaeologist. His reverence for the various religions is evident but I also love the healthy skepticism that is also evident in his work and his questions.

Idk, he clearly has an agenda and will bend what he sees to the pattern he wants. Don’t get me wrong, I like the show but that is my biggest criticism. It isn’t an archeology show, it is a religion show

My first thought was, "I didn't know Qumran used to be a thick hardwood forest!" Which it would have to have been, to fire pottery for a factory! Olive oil doesn't heat kilns to the temperature necessary -- 2400 F. And why in the world would you clean clay? You dig it out, mix it with sand, hair, straw with a little water to help mix it -- but not too much because you want it to dry. I make clay bricks, clay ovens, etc., and have never, ever washed the clay. But anyway, to get to the required temperature takes a good 12 hours of feeding the fire for a kiln the size of a couple refrigerators. By the way -- where were the kilns?

Anyone who is interested in the Essenes & in the Qumran Community needs to look into Dr Ken Johnson’s work which is ongoing even now. The Essenes actually called their community “Damascus”. The YT channel is “Ken Johnson”. The actual library that was found at Qumran has been highly censored until recently. We are just now getting the real scoop. The Essenes were a popular movement in Israel. Very respected by the people. The Qumran community wasn’t all the Essenes. The actual Zadok lineage of Priests & those Priests & Levites who supported them stayed in Qumran for periods of time. Menachim (who is mentioned in both the Talmud & the Book of Acts) was an Essenes Leader. He was also one of the two leaders of the Sanhedrin. Essenes means “healers”. They were famous for their healing knowledge & abilities. They tended to live much longer than other people of their age. From their writings, we know exactly what happened to them.

re what I think as the very weak argument for claiming Qumran was only a pottery - Has anyone compared the makeup of the jars the Scrolls were found in to the pottery material in the caves? Or has anyone proffered that the Qumran inhabitants obviously used pottery for pots, dishes, cups etc - and since there was no Walmart down the road - then would it not be reasonable to suspect they made their own pottery?

Right so thankfully the presenter agreed with me. The other fact that I know is that both Yeshua and his cousin John (the baptist) were taught at Qumran by the essenes because Yeshua’s (wrongly translated to Jesus) parents were both also essenes. Therefore they both acquired a massive range of teaching that would have made them both the equivalent today of Doctors and thus experts within their fields. They were taught things like mathematics, astronomy, astrology, medicine, healing, meditation and the older texts. Both John and Yeshua came from a very big family and Yeshua had brothers and sisters. He was not an only child. Plus he traveled extensively in between his studies with his uncle and mother to other countries. Including what we now know is the United Kingdom. Why? Because his uncle bought tin from the tin mines in Cornwall in the United Kingdom and sold it to the romans. He is uncle, who only gets one mention in the bible was a very wealthy man. His sister was Mary, Yeshua’s mother.

Someone had to have wanted to save the library of Jerusalem when they knew they were being besieged and attacked. They knew they had to save all the writings. I would imagine they sent people out of Jerusalem with the library or as much as the person(s)could carry or put on a donkey or something but I wouldn’t imagine that they ended up 3 minutes from the Essenes..?🤷🏻♀️ Just thinking 💭….

The "Essenes" were a group of Kabalistic, Mystical (Egyptian School) Gnostic Jews, who lived in Ein Gedi, NOT Bethabara (Qumran)! The True High Priests (Sons of Zadok) lived at the Commune in Bethabara (having been exiled there by the 'Hasmonean Pharisaical Priests' at Jerusalem). Zacharias (Zechariah), Father of John the Baptist, was there, and Yeshua (Yahusha, Jesus Christ) was baptized there, and likely spent time there during His early Years. Josephus WAS trained by the Ein Gedi Essenes; however, he was NOT trained by the "Sons of Zadok Priests" (who were the rightful Heirs to the Jerusalem Priesthood).
