In this video, I offer teachings related to Decolonizing Psychology and how colonialism severed our wellness. Here I speak to the holistic wellness that our ancestors lived and embodied in their connection with the natural and spiritual world. This connection with Creation positively impacted our psyche and overall health. And, because of the programming from the western world, we became fragmented beings. The intention with this video is to begin to explore how we can decolonize psychology and reclaim our ancestral ways that kept us well and in harmony with our Mother Earth and the spirits.
Please note: I am not against therapy and understand that therapy in its current form may be helpful to some people. I believe in therapy as it is ultimately an Indigenous practice, though its current form reflects a Western worldview. It is my hope that we can begin to decolonize the practice so that the field can contribute to collective healing and liberation and truly serve the people in these times.
If you are a therapist seeking guidance to decolonize your practice, I invite you to sign up for the waitlist to join my program guiding therapists to do just that. May you answer the call. www.drrosalesmeza.com/a-new-p...
Additional resources: Dr. Eduardo Duran Dr. Maria Yellowhorse Braveheart Dr. Joy DeGruy Dr. Manuel X. Zamarripa Dr. Michael Yellow Bird Frantz Fanon Ignacio Martin-Baro The teachings I share also come from my own lived experiences, my walk as a medicine woman, and more than two decades of experience in facilitating healing and teaching anti-oppressive work.

This video was eye -opening and honestly hard to hear. I'm currently at a crossroads in my life and definitely hyper-independent. While I understand how oppression affected my family, as the only one who rages against the dysfunction in my family, I wonder how it is possible to heal my family when they don't want to even acknowledge their behavior. I'm struggling with wanting to connect with them, but still angry at the hurt and pain my family of origin has caused. Because if I go back into the family system, I'm expected to forget my own suffering in favor of everyone's else's comfort. And I just cannot allow myself to suffer anymore. How can this possibly be healed?

I profoundly enjoyed watching your video, Dr. Meza. You beautifully articulated some roots of issues with western mainstream media and how to decolonize. We need more pepole to talk about decolonization of counseling and probe it from many other aspects too. Love and light

The thing that resonates with me most is how you mentioned that we aren’t meant to be hyper independent people. I think about this often as I feel as if it’s a “flaw” of mine, but it is definitely something I’ve pressured myself into being. Whenever I have dealt with very low periods with my wellbeing the one thing I crave most is connection but also the thing I would deny myself of at the same time. There is so much that I now want to reflect on and challenge my belief system around psychology and well being.

A little independence is good, like how the Yin/Yang symbol has a spot of the opposite color inside of it. Hyper independence is not natural though.

This is something I’ve never considered or realized before. I appreciate your video and insight. It makes me want to look into this more. I don’t think I’ve ever had people talk about this before which is surprising.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have articulated so precisely what I have wrestled with as a colonialized white woman indoctrinated into white male patriarchal systems and the horrific abuse that has come from these systems. In deconstructing the ways I've collaborated, and had blind loyalties, I have burned many old bridges (they we collapsing anyway) - many - as there is a time when the rage at it all can be debilitating OR to stay with and be blessed to find someone like you - there is a crystal clear recognition. I feel less alone - your words seep into the marrow of my bones, the memories of what I live for - the people - our ancestors who are here - speaking through you, calling us forth - those who are coming forth... I will share this video with my list that has been dwindling since my messaging has shifted - that is fine. Those who remain are the ones ready to live our ancient wisdom. I don't know you but I love you and all that you represent. Thank you!
