My monthly livestream will focus on Mogollon pottery in August. I will discuss the history of Mogollon pottery, showing how the Mogollon were hugely underrated innovators in Southwest pottery. And also discussing the different pigments and techniques they used to produce their pottery. The Southwest Kiln Conference will be held in the heart of Mogollon country this October in Silver City, New Mexico, let's brush up on our Mogollon pottery making materials and techniques so we can make some stunning pottery for the conference. Also of course I will be taking your pottery related questions live, drop by and say "hi".

Thanks for watching. Mogollon pottery is incredibly diverse and it can be a hard story to tell, so I thank those of you who watched this through. I try to make history fun and interesting and show some beautiful pottery along the way. I was able to compress the story of Hohokam pottery down to 2 and a half minutes, Mogollon, an hour!!! Here is that Hohokam video I mentioned in this stream kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqLSfqGirqylpZI

Andy, I have a possibly weird question. Recently I have gotten into an interesting discussion with Chad Zuber (he does primitive survival stuff here on YT.) And I wondered if you could use fired clay as a building material, specifically, large flat pieces with interlocking edges like tongue and groove, to build a funtional house, instead of using something like adobe bricks, or stone, for example. Can you give me your thoughts?

Regarding something sugary in Canada, sugar maples are prevalent across much of Eastern Canada. I wonder if maple syrup would work? Additionally, black locust is found in similar areas here, which produces pods very similar to mesquite, though I'm not sure what the sugar content in that case would be. Apparently the pods are poisonous, but the flowers are sweet.

I know some people who were trying to make paint out of locust pods but I never heard how it came out. I know maple syrup would work because I have tried it, I should have thought of that.

From what I’ve read, various tubers, succulents like agave among other fermentable plants were used as well. Porous clay vessels, from my experiments, shorten the time to ferment beverages.

I’ve done archaeological survey in south-central New Mexico, and I’ve lived near Chupadera Mesa, but I never realized the richness and depth of the Mogollon/Mimbres/Casas Grandes ceramic tradition. Many thanks for this video. It was a real eye-opener.

Have you considered creating a video that explores how the Mogollon created the smudged interiors to their early pots?

What do the indigenous peoples think of replicating ancient pottery?
@AncientPottery

We might just as well ask how do white people feel about Lady Gaga. No group of people can be so compartmentalized as to say indigenous people feel X about Y. Sure there are some against, there are also many for, some of those are coming to the kiln conference next month in New Mexico. Replicators provide a market for people who want to own ancient pottery thereby reducing demand for artifacts looted from graves. So in that light replicas are are helping to keep indigenous graves and ruins intact.
